On Yom HaShoah (Thursday, April 24), we will be offering a special program at Beit Knesset Hanassi. We will present the extremely powerful film AMEN. This award-winning, highly acclaimed movie is the dramatization of an impossible-to-believe story. It is a film about the Nazi officer who tried to stop the Holocaust. SS-Obersturmführer Kurt Gerstein was the head of Nazi disinfection services. He discovered that the chemicals that he provided for rodent extermination were being used to mass-murder Jews. He learned that the Zyklon B he was in charge of distributing was being sent to Auschwitz and other camps for the purpose of killing Jews. Over and over again, he risked his life attempting to get nations, international organizations and the Pope to halt the slaughter. This superb film is deeply moving, all the more so because it is based on a true story. The movie is in English and is a little over two hours in length. The program will begin at 2:00 pm. The gathering will commence with the saying of ?? ??? ????? and the lighting of six commemorative candles. There will be a lecture about the film after the screening. The talk will include more information about the actual history and the fate of SS-Obersturmführer Kurt Gerstein. A day like no other, Shvii Shel Pesach, is when all gates of the impossible are open. Rav Ashkenazi asks: Why did Hashem lead us by way of the Yam Suf? This was not the direct path from Mitzrayim to Eretz Yisrael. Yet Hashem needed to demonstrate to Am Yisroel, Pharaoh, and the Mitzrim that the impossible is possible when we choose H'shem. It is said that zivugim (finding one's match) and parnasah (livelihood) are as "difficult" for H'shem as the splitting of the sea. What could be difficult for the Creator who fashioned the entire world? This paradox reveals that H'shem established a framework of bitachon (trust) in the world that operates through midah k'neged midah (measure for measure). When we stand at the edge of our personal "sea" in any of life's situations and trust that Hashem will save us—with calmness in our hearts, smiles on our faces, and the courage to leap forward, that is our personal splitting of the sea. Even when we may not deserve salvation, our bitachon in Hashem compels His hand to make the impossible possible in every situation. Don't let this opportunity pass you by.
