The Body Overpowers the Soul Said Rabbi Schmelke: "We read in the Song of Songs (1:9): 'I have compared you, O my love, to a steed in Pharaoh's chariots.' The Talmud (Mechilta to Exodus 14:25) explains that when the chariots of the Egyptians entered the Red Sea, the force of the current became so powerful that the horses were pulled along by the chariots. Likewise, the soul within us has its own life, and the body can be compared to inert matter. Yet we permit our bodies to draw our souls into the torrent of pleasures, even as the living horses were dragged along by the chariots." Source: Shemen ha-Tov

Today's Inspiration - Shabbat shalom - Chag sameach!
Miracles Beyond Imitation Said the Belzer Rabbi: "We find that Pharaoh's magicians were able to perform by their secret arts the miracles of turning water into blood and of bringing up frogs. The other miracles they were not able to duplicate. The quesiton arises: Why did the Lord cause Moshe to perform miracles that could be duplicated by magic? Could He not have enjoined that all ten plagues be beyond imitation?" "The answer is as follows: The Lord knew that in later times non-believers might arise and say: 'The Egyptian soothsayers were possessed of little sagacity, and hence Moshe was able to deceive them. We, however, would not have been victims of his chicanery.' Then we believers might retort: 'If you are wiser than the Egyptians sages, accomplish at least as much as they. Turn water into blood and bring up frogs. If you cannot do this, you must admit their superiority, and at the same time recognzie that they acknowledged the divine power resident in the acts of Moshe." Source: Dover Shalom

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM Day 11 ¨C Common Knowledge A derogatory statement is considered loshon hora even when the information is common knowledge for, as stated above, to speak negatively of one¡¯s fellow Jew is shameful in itself. Negative information about Jews appearing in newspapers may not be repeated. Newspapers often publish articles based on hearsay and thus, one is not even permitted to believe such information if the newspaper is its only source. Even after one has verified the information, he may nevertheless not repeat it. SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON Equal to All Talmud Yerushalmi (Pe¡¯ah 1:1) states that the reward for studying Torah is equivalent to that of all other mitzvos combined, and the punishment for speaking loshon hora is equivalent to that of all other sins combined. Thus, the antithesis of Torah study, the greatest of all mitzvos, is loshon hora. Their respective primacy can be explained as follows: Of the four basic elements of nature ¡ªfire, wind, water and earth ¡ªthe intangible (fire and wind) are far more powerful than the tangible (water and earth). Fire can engulf material objects and totally destroy them, and the power of wind is awesome, as it is written, ¡°A great and mighty wind which breaks apart mountains and shatters stones¡± (I Melachim 19:11). The same is true in the spiritual realm. Torah study impacts in the Upper Worlds in a way that no other mitzvah can. This is because all other mitzvos are related to the physical ¡ª for example, to fulfill the mitzvah of tzitzis, one dons a garment, a material object; a lulav is held, a physical act; a shofar must be blown, etc. Torah study, however, is performed through the power of speech, which, essentially, is a function of the soul.1 This is why the reward of Torah study is equivalent to that of all other mitzvos combined. The converse is true of sin. The spiritual damage caused by loshon hora is infinitely greater than that caused by other transgressions, because it is committed through the power of speech. Its effect in the Upper Spheres is awesome. Therefore, its punishment is equivalent to that of all other sins combined. 1. As mentioned above, Targum Onkelos translates ¡°and man became a living being¡± (Bereishis 2:7), as ¡°and man became a speaking spirit.¡± Dedications and Sponsorships Do you know someone who needs a refuah shleima? Today's Inspiration
The Miracle of the Exodus Thus taught Rabbi Elimelech of Lizensk: "At the pronouncement of laws, Holy Scripture always makes mention of the Exodus out of Egypt, and never of the creation of the world. How is this? Was not the creation out of a void a greater miracle than the Exodus? Understand, then, that the Creation, properly speaking, was not a miracle. All nature is God, and subject to Him, and whatever sprang into being at His behest, did so in a natural way. But the Exodus was a wonder, for to deal with the Egyptians according to their merits, God had to divest Himself, for the time being, of His goodness, and let evil prevail." Time for Redemption Rabbi Bunam commented upon Exodus 6:6 "I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burden of the Egyptians." "A burden," he said is usually carried with ease after one has become accustomed to it. When the Lord observed that the Israelites were growing accustomed to their tasks and labored at them without complaint, then He deemed it high time they were liberated." Source: Siach Sarfei Kodesh

Is there anywhere in Jerusalem that is quiet?
Shalom Is there anywhere in Jerusalem that is quiet? If not, is there anywhere in Israel that is quiet? If not what country has peace and quiet? The noise of the neighbours at all hours of night and day at a level that is not suitable for residential living but belongs only in a nightclub or music (aka noise) festival is destroying us. The police are not interested. What country permits noise at such levels until 11 pm at night? Does no-one know the dangers to health of noise pollution? MY mother and I have both been in hospital due to fainting from our blood pressure going out of control thanks to the noise pollution. Added to this we have dreadful mold that the landlord refuses to clean or repair. We HAVE to move urgently. Can anyone help us with Tzeddakah, Maaser, Join our Patreon pages I can not take another sleepless night. My health has suffered as has my mother and my husband. Please help us to move. I can share a video of the level of the noise, how can any law permit this to happen in any residential area? Did you know that noise pollution affects even a fetus as it growth in it's mother's womb. Why does Israel IGNORE the health hazzards of noise???? Does anyone know that in order to function normally it is recommended to have 8 quality hours of sleep. If one has to get up at 6 am to begin your day how can noise until 11 pm be permitted. 11 pm to 6 am is less than 8 hours. That means that stealing sleep has become permitted, how can that possibly be??? Did you know that it takes time for the body to unwind after being exposed to loud noise which means that even if the noise is turned off at 11 pm a human being can not get to sleep immediately. Sleep deprivation is a health hazzard for every human being. Please help us to move to somewhere that is quiet. Shoshanah Shear Former Occupational Therapist.

Chesed for Single Woman Cancer Patient

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM Day 6 ¨C Content and Intent Previously, we saw that a statement which is essentially derogatory is forbidden, regardless of the speaker¡¯s opinion regarding that statement. Conversely, it is forbidden to utter a statement which, essentially, is not derogatory, if either the speaker or the listener considers it derogatory. An illustration of this would be where an individual¡¯s mode of dress is being discussed. Although there may be nothing wrong with the way the person dresses, nevertheless, it is forbidden to say that the individual dresses in that manner, if either the speaker or listener has an unfavorable impression of those who dress that way. SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON Beyond Comprehension Let us address the contention that it is virtually impossible to faithfully observe the laws of shmiras haloshon for more than a day or two: Even if this were correct, is it reason enough to ignore this mitzvah? Imagine a person walking along the seashore, who sees that the sea has washed ashore precious gems. Would such a person ¡ª even if he were wealthy ¡ª refrain from picking up any gems because he knows it will be impossible to gather them all? It is exactly the same regarding shmiras haloshon. It is well known that the Vilna Gaon (in his famous letter) quotes the Midrash which says that for each moment in which a person refrains from speaking the forbidden, he merits a hidden light that no angel can fathom. Note that the Midrash does not speak of refraining from forbidden speech for a month, a week, or an hour ¡ª but for only a moment! Scripture states: ¡°If you will seek it like silver and hunt for it like hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of Hashem, and knowledge of God you will find¡± (Mishlei 2:4-5). One must strive to attain spiritual goals in the way that he would seek the greatest valuables that this world has to offer. This is the intent of the statement, ¡°Do not distance yourself from a quality that is without limit.¡± Avoiding forbidden speech brings infinite merit; if we will only pursue this quality, and not tell ourselves that it is out of our reach, then we will have achieved that which no angel can fathom. Keep reading Day 7, the lesson for Shabbos SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM Day 7 ¨C Matters of Taste It would seem that there is nothing derogatory about a statement of taste. To say, ¡°I don¡¯t like dry wine,¡± is a description of the speaker¡¯s preferences and not a critical evaluation of the wine. Ostensibly, then, one should be allowed to say that one does not like the oratory style of a given lecturer. In fact, however, such statements are generally prohibited, for they imply that the speaker lacks effectiveness. SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON Breaking Bad Habits In truth, there is no basis for the contention that the average person cannot avoid forbidden speech for more than a day or two. It is a proven fact that the longer one persists in guarding his tongue, the easier it becomes. To gossip is a habit, and habits, as time goes on, become a part of a person¡¯s nature. But bad habits can be broken, especially when one becomes aware that a given habit involves numerous Torah prohibitions and is described by our Sages in most severe terms. Such an awareness, coupled with a bit of zealousness, goes a long way. One who would speak whatever came to mind without a moment¡¯s hesitation, will now find himself weighing his words before expressing them. One should not grow frustrated if, after he resolved to avoid forbidden speech, his evil inclination got the better of him and he spoke loshon hora. Even if this happens time and again, nevertheless, he should not despair. Rather, he should forever strengthen himself to avoid improper speech, and persevere. This is how one should conduct himself his entire life. This is the intent of the Talmud¡¯s statement, ¡°One should forever arouse his good inclination to subdue his evil inclination¡± (Berachos 5a). Life is an ongoing struggle with one¡¯s evil inclination. One must forever be poised for battle and never be discouraged by failure. With knowledge of what the Torah r

Two Pesach Tours with Shalom Pollack
TWO PESACH TOURS WITH SHALOM POLLACK Monday, April 14 The Beautiful Western Negev Desert We will travel through the heart of the majestic Western Negev in bloom as we visit Kibbutz Revivim. This beautiful oasis in the desert was established in 1943 by German and Italian refugees despite the British ban on Jewish immigration, land purchase, and settlement. Taking advantage of existing Ottoman law, the young pioneers built a walled" settlement" overnight. In the morning, they were the southernmost Jewish presence in the Land of Israel. Surrounded by sand and Bedouins, they began building a community. During the 1948 War of Independence, the tiny settlement was caught behind enemy lines as the Negev was conquered by the Egyptians. Their desperate, successful battle against overwhelming forces is legendary. They wrote history with their self-sacrifice and vision. We will tour the kibbutz, including the original structures and defense posts, as the battle is reconstructed with the aid of a multimedia presentation. One of the greatest challenges for the young community was water. We will enjoy a special presentation about how they acquired water. We will see archeological evidence of how ancient residents of the area solved this problem. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We will then visit a new pioneering farm in the Southern Hebron hills and meet a family just getting started in the spirit of 1948. We will learn of the challenges and the vision of our own generation's heroes, influencing the course of Jewish history, as their predecessors did in the 1930s and 40s. Meet at the Inbal Hotel at 9:00 am Return at approx. 5:00 pm Bring lunch and water 300 shekels. To register Email to: shalompollack613@.... Leave your name and phone number. _________________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, April 16 The Shomron in Bloom and Glory We will be guests of the renewed community and yeshiva of Chomesh in the northern Shomron. In 2005, Chomesh and three other Jewish communities were uprooted as part of the expulsions of Gush Katif. The yeshiva students of Chomesh defied the "No Jews allowed" edict. Enduring government expulsions and Arab terror attacks, they continued their Torah study. Finally, just over a year ago, the government legalized the study of Torah in Chomesh. Today, Chomesh is a community budding around the vibrant yeshiva. We are invited to visit this amazing community and meet today's heroes and tomorrow's leaders of Am Yisrael. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We will have a guided tour of Mount Eival and the original altar of Yehoshua. Escorted by the army, we will travel in an armored bus to the site bordering areas that Israel relinquished with the Oslo Accords of 1993. Archaeologist Adam Zertal discovered perhaps the most important Jewish site in the land of Israel. On the highest peak of Mt Eival, Joshua reaffirmed the mission of the Jewish Nation upon entering the land over 3.300 years ago. Amazingly, the altar that he built is intact. Here is where it all began. Today, instead of a major museum built around this most important symbol of Jewish connection to our land, the Palestinian Authority has been encroaching on the site, causing irreparable damage. Our visit will strengthen the Jewish connection to the site where our forefathers confirmed their allegiance to Torah as we entered the land. Depart from the Inbal Hotel at 9:00 am Return approx. 6:00 pm Bring lunch and water 300 shekels To register email to: ShalomPollack613@... Please include your name and phone number.
