Love is the Chief Thing

The Besht was asked: "What is the chief point in service to the Lord, if it be true, as you teach, that fasting and self-chastisement are sinful?"
The Besht answered: "The main thing is to encompass oneself in the love of God, the love of Israel, and the love of Torah. A man may attain this is he? secures enough nourishment to preserve his health, and if he makes use of his strength to battle against evil inclinaitons."
