Among the other inhabitants of Ukraine, Jewish men, women, and children are being bombed!? Imagine that instead of waking up today and getting your kids off to school or hurrying to work, you needed (chas v'shalom) to figure out what to do so that you and your family members wouldn't die in one of the explosions raining down on your neighborhood. And I didn't mention another detail:? There's no internet, no phone....NO form of communication whatsoever except speaking (or screaming) to the people in your presence.? And to Ha-shem of course.??

You may think "Oy! That's terrible! But what can I do?"

There are four things I can think of that you can do.? Please, choose at least SOMETHING!

1. Join in completing the Sifrei Tehillim being said to help our fellow Jews GET OUT OF THERE ALIVE! (So far I've been informed that Hatzolah of Ukraine, as well as Arkea Airline (owned by a frum Jew) have been doing their best to transport our brethren out of there.? 2. Donate money to help buy sleeping bags, food, medical supplies, and other necessities for these families who are leaving their homes in a sudden, traumatic, and dangerous way.??It seems to me that it's similar to how it was in the Shoa.? They're just picking-up and leaving EVERYTHING behind so they and their kids will have a chance to stay alive in some other land!? (By the way, for some that will mean Poland, for some it will mean Eretz Yisrael, and for some it means at the opposite end of the Ukraine.)? Donate whatever you are able to.??This is pikuach nefesh for an entire community of Jews!? There is ZERO relief from the government or from NATO.? 3. Daven to our Father! Show Him how much it pains you that His other children are suffering! Plead with Him to save them and ease their plight.? I believe that that very demonstration of sisterhood and brotherhood alone can make an impact in Shamayim.

If you've been thinking about being more careful in some area, or of starting something new in your Yiddishkeit and you didn't feel ready yet, NOW is a great time to take the plunge and do it for the Jews in Ukraine (besides benefitting yourself).??

It is forbidden to believe rechilus even if the speaker is someone very close to the listener and would not want to draw him into a feud unnecessarily. Even though it is clear that the speaker has only the good of the listener in mind, his account of the story may not be accepted as fact.
?
If one finds it difficult to convince himself that the report is totally false, he must, at the very least, assume that the speaker’s interpretation of the incident is mistaken and that no ill will was intended by the subject. (As stated above, if the report was intended to save him from harm, he must, of course, protect himself on the possibility that it may be true.)

In essence, it is every Jew’s desire to fulfill Hashem’s will. It is ignorance of halachah, lack of awareness of the matter’s severity, and a feeling of helplessness as to how to change oneself in this area, which are the root causes of widespread disregard for Shmiras haloshon. One who will attempt to guide others in this matter will surely find his words well received, and will bring great merit to his fellow Jews.

Zohar Chadash states (Lech Lecha 25a): “Rav Avahu said: ‘Take note of the great reward that awaits one who inspires another Jew to repent. From where is this derived? From the words, “And Malkitzedek, King of Shaleim, brought out bread and wine” ‘ (Bereishis 14:18). R’ Chiya Rabbah taught: ‘When the soul of a righteous person who inspired others to repent departs this world, the angel Michael, who brings the souls of the righteous before their Creator, goes forth to greet him, as it is written: And Malkitzedek — this refers to Michael, head of the keepers of the Gates of Tzedek (Righteousness); King of Shaleim — this refers to the Jerusalem of Heaven; brought out bread and wine — he goes forth to welcome the righteous man, saying: Peace unto you!’ ”

Elsewhere, Zohar Chadash states (ibid. 62a): “A Heavenly call goes forth each day: ‘Meritorious are those who toil in Torah, who draw others close to Torah, and who overlook the hurt caused them.’ ”

One may not believe rechilus even if it was related in public. The fact that a person is unafraid to publicly relate information that is cause for ill will is not proof of its authenticity and certainly not of its accuracy.

Furthermore, even if an accusation is made in the presence of the subject and the accused fails to respond, one may not interpret his silence as self-incrimination. The person may have been flustered and at a loss for words, of he may have chosen to remain silent rather than cause an escalation of the verbal abuse hurled at him.

The Midrash states that four sources of merit figured prominently in the redemption from Egypt: The Jews did not adopt Egyptian names, did not speak in the way of the Egyptians, were not guilty of immorality and did not speak loshon hora (Vayikra Rabbah 32:5).

Tanna D’Vei Eliyahu Rabbah (ch. 23) relates:

When the Jews were in Egypt, they assembled and sat down together, for they were united as one. They established a covenant to do kindness with one another; to safeguard in their hearts the covenant of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov; to serve their Father in Heaven alone; not to forsake the language of their father Yaakov’s house; and not to learn the language of the Egyptians, so as not to follow the ways of idol worshipers.

The Egyptians would ask them: “Why do you not serve our gods, for if you did, your workload would be lightened?’’ The Jews responded: “Did our forefathers forsake our Father in Heaven, that we should now do the same?’’

It is reasonable to assume that people dislike those who speak badly of their friends or relatives. Therefore, to tell an individual that someone has spoken negatively of his friend or relative is to speak rechilus.
?
An important application of this law is in the case of children. We have learned that one may speak of a child’s mischievous behavior if neither the speaker nor the listener will think any less of the child as a result of the incident. Since the Torah deems children culpable for their actions only in a limited sense, their misbehavior is considered shameful only if people view it as such. Nevertheless, it is common for a parent or grandparent to feel ill will toward someone who tells others of his child’s or grandchild’s misbehavior. Therefore, to inform a parent or grandparent that someone told of their child’s misbehavior is to speak rechilus.

The King and His Bird
?
“Trust in Hashem forever, for in God, Hashem, is the strength of the worlds” (Yeshayahu 26:4). The term “forever” alludes to the current situation, when the happenings of this world are guided from Above with a degree of hester panim, Divine concealment [as opposed to earlier generations, such as the Temple era, when God’s involvement in the world’s affairs was plainly apparent]. Even in our day, when Hashem seems hidden from us and many have strayed from the ways of their ancestors, nevertheless, one should trust in Hashem.
?
We can compare this to the situation of a king who possessed great wealth and power, and ruled over his kingdom in grand style. One day, news reached the royal palace that a small, insignificant village had rebelled against the king’s rule. While the king’s advisers were debating what sort of punishment should be dealt the rebels, the king went for a stroll in his garden. He came upon a beautiful bird chirping in a very sweet way. A servant obeyed the king’s order that the bird be brought to the royal palace so that the king and his family could enjoy its chirping. As the bird was being carried to its new home, it began to chirp a lilting song. Someone said aloud, “How lovely are you, and how lovely are the songs that you sing! How I worry that you may go hungry, now that some of the king’s subjects have rebelled and refuse to give of their produce for the royal family and its pets.’’
?
A servant of the king replied: “You foolish, ignorant man! Need a king, who rules over scores of provinces and whose storehouses overflow with abundance, worry about a few grains that his bird needs for sustenance? How foolish can one be?!’’
?
The message of this parable is clear, as we shall see.
