Correction...Please help this poor family

Shavua Tov and Chodesh Tov to everyone.

Some people that wanted to help this poor family sent emails to me that the Mekimi website was not working and they could not make a donation. It has now been fixed. Below is my previous message.

On Sun, Feb 4, 2024 at 8:53?PM Larisa Tsygankov <larisayerushalayim@...> wrote:
Shalom and Shavua Tov

Many Rabbis, including Rabbi Berel Wein, Rabbi Zvi Schwarts and Rabbi Amram Rister can vouch for this terrible situation.

I am writing today because this family we have been helping is suffering very badly. The father is more sick than ever, and only leaves his home for doctors, tests, and the hospital, and only with an escort to help him walk. WIthout help they will have to leave their home. For years the boy has been learning at a special school.

For those who do not know, this is a single father raising his son alone. Besides his multiple illnesses, including surgeries for cancer and other things. He is in heavy debt due to a company where he worked that went bankrupt and did not pay him a lot of money. He is a very nice man that always helps others. Now he and his son need help urgently.

There are American and Israeli charities accepting donations for them, and
it is also possible to help through their grocery store (makolet) or by
bank transfer to friends that are trying to help the family. Feel free to
write to me for details.

For *USA tax deductible receipts*, the Bayswater Neighbors Fund has a
website to donate. I will write the link below. If anyone prefers to send a
check, please email me and I will send the address.

Right above the SUBMIT button on the donation form is written "My
contribution is for:" and then they have a drop-down menu to choose where
the donation will go. Important to choose, "Family in Jerusalem", and push
the Submit button once. This is very important or they will not know to
whom to give the donation*. Please also email me if you donate so we can
follow up. Here is the link to donate.

*For Israel donations/receipts*, please see the link below. It is *VERY
IMPORTANT* to write *FUND 2110* in the comment box or the donation will not
go to the family and to email me if you donate so we can follow up. Here is
the link for the Mekimi organization donation page.

*Then click on"Secured donation by credit card" and please remember to
write FUND 2110 in the comment box.*

Thank you all in advance. Tizku L'Mitzvot

MOVIE MATINEE and SPECIAL BONUS!

Please see special bonus feature added below. Thank you.

??I am pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, February 20, we will present the film "GI JEWS".

This award-winning documentary tells the profound and unique story of the 550,000 Jewish American men and women who served in World War II. Jewish veterans share their experiences in the two wars they fought¡ªfor America and for Jews everywhere.

Through the eyes of the servicemen and women, the film brings to life the story of Jews in World War II as active participants in the fight against Hitler, bigotry and intolerance.

Jewish Americans fought on two fronts: for America and for Jews worldwide. Like all Americans, they fought against fascism. But they also fought a more personal fight¡ªto save their brethren in Europe. In the midst of it all, they battled anti-Semitism within the ranks of the U.S. military, facing slurs and violence from their fellow servicemen.

Included among the numerous Jewish veterans who tell their stories are Henry Kissinger, Carl Reiner, Robert Morgenthau and Mel Brooks.

This is a very special film!

The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. The movie is in English and also has English subtitles. The film is 1? hours in length. In addition, there will be a brief introduction of the film, a short talk and discussion after the screening and an essay about the movie provided to all attendees.

There will be refreshments. No reservations are required. Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.

For more information, please contact Mark at 0548 01 1957 or markpollock@....
??SPECIAL BONUS:

The Movie Matinee on February 20, "GI Jews", will be proceeded by a short film, "1500 Sandwiches for Soldiers", filmed in October at an Angel Bakery caf¨¦. Volunteers gathered to make 1500 sandwiches that would be delivered that day to soldiers in a number of locations. Photographer and filmmaker Judah S. Harris will be present to introduce his film.

Day 149 ¨C Rechilus and Loshon Hora

?
The conditions for a statement to be considered proper, constructive speech, rather than prohibited rechilus, are almost identical to those which permit communicating information that would otherwise be considered loshon hora (i.e. information that is derogatory or harmful). In fact, a study of the situations which permit rechilus l¡¯toeles (for a constructive purpose) will reveal that virtually every case involves loshon hora as well.
???????????
As discussed above, among the reasons which permit speaking rechilus for a constructive purpose are the prevention or termination of harm, or gaining restitution for harm caused by the subject. Such statements invariably incriminate the subject, and are therefore loshon hora. Thus, for rechilus to be spoken for a constructive purpose, all conditions which permit speaking loshon hora for a constructive purpose must be met as well.
???????????
Conversely, not all motives that justify negative speech qualify as a constructive purpose to permit speaking rechilus. While one may publicize the wrongdoings of an individual if social pressure could bring about a change in his behavior, one could not do so if the victim is as yet unaware of the individual¡¯s identity. The evils of causing animosity between the victim and villain outweigh the possibility that social pressure will yield concrete constructive results.
?
?

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
¡°When Your Enemy Falls ...¡¯¡¯
?
How careful must a Jew be not to rejoice over his fellow¡¯s downfall or disgrace! As Scripture states, ¡°When your enemy falls be not glad, and when he stumbles, let your heart not be joyous. Lest Hashem see it and it displease Him, and He will turn His wrath from him [to you]¡¯¡¯ (Mishlei 3:5). To rejoice over another¡¯s failures is to direct the Attribute of Judgment toward oneself in a powerful way. Moreover, this sin has the destructive power of idol worship. The Sages relate (Midrash Eichah?1:21) that at the time of the First Destruction the soul of the Patriarch Avraham entered the Temple ruins. ¡°What is My beloved doing in My house?¡¯¡¯ asked Hashem. Responded Avraham, ¡°Why have my descendants been cast into exile among the nations of the world?¡¯¡¯ Hashem answered, ¡°Because they worship idols and rejoice over each other¡¯s downfall.¡¯¡¯ Thus, Hashem equates these two sins.
?
One should forever reflect upon his own spiritual failings so that he will be reminded that he too is deserving of shame and scorn. It is the merits of his ancestors, coupled with other factors for which he can take no credit that Hashem, in His mercy, spares him from shame. With this outlook, one will truly empathize with those who experience failure and disappointment in their personal lives.

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM
?
Day 150 ¨C Secondhand Information: A Distinction
?
We have seen (Day 140) that secondhand information which would ordinarily be considered rechilus may be communicated for a constructive purpose provided that it is not presented as fact. Regarding loshon hora, however, communicating secondhand information for a constructive purpose was prohibited in most cases (see Day 43).
?
The Chofetz Chaim explains that while achieving a positive result on the basis of firsthand information is justified even when the chances for success are minimal, secondhand information may be used only when one can assume that the intended result will almost certainly be achieved. Consequently, one may inform one party in a prospective shidduch (marriage match) or business partnership of possible major problems regarding the other party (see Day 83) on the basis of hearsay, since such information will probably be taken very seriously. For the same reason, one may warn a potential victim of impending danger on the basis of secondhand information.

Conversely, one cannot publicize the alleged unethical behavior of an individual with the hope that social pressure will encourage him to change his ways or reimburse his victims; this would be permissible only when one has witness to such behavior. The effectiveness of social pressure in persuading people to change their ways is far too limited to justify relating secondhand negative information ¨C even if it is clearly stated that the information has not been verified.

Squandering One¡¯s Wealth

?
In the Book of Mishlei (Proverbs), we read, ¡°There is one who is [apparently] rich, but [in truth] has nothing¡± (Mishlei 13:7). To understand this proverb, let us imagine that a person has made business investments which earned him huge profits. To everyone, including himself, the man seems on his way to achieving great wealth. Later, however, the man makes a thorough accounting of all his endeavors and discovers that, to his dismay, the losses of certain investments all but nullified the huge profits that other investments had earned for him. There is one who is apparently rich, but in truth has nothing.
?
The lesson is clear: A person can spend a lifetime accruing merit through the performance of mitzvos and the study of Torah. Yet he can come to the Next World and find that his merits have been nullified by his negative attitude towards others. The bounty of spiritual reward that had been awaiting him was washed away by the waves of scorn, slander and strife which poured forth from his lips.

Day 148 ¨C No Revenge

?
Condition #7:
???????????
The final condition necessary to permit speaking what would otherwise be rechilus for a constructive purpose is that conveying the information does not cause undue harm to the subject. Constructive intent does not justify causing harm to another person.
???????????
Therefore, one cannot inform a person that someone else is about to harm him if the person will respond by harming the plotter. This applies not only to physical or financial retaliation, but even to retaliation in the form of loshon hora in a manner prohibited by halachah.

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
A Study in Contrasts
?
In summation: A Jew must strive to develop positive character traits, especially with regard to traits that have a major impact on interpersonal relationships. One must strive to assist his fellow to the best of his ability and overlook his fellow¡¯s faults just as he would want others to overlook his own faults. If one¡¯s friend has expressed his anger toward someone else, he should do his best to soothe that anger through reason and explanation ¡ª a demonstration of true wisdom and inner strength.
?
A wicked person behaves in the very opposite way. He seeks to damage others, to reveal their unintentional misdeeds and claim that they were committed willfully. The wicked person rejoices over another¡¯s failings, and incites others to feud. He prides himself over his success in such endeavors, as he considers this an indication of his wisdom and might ¡ª but of course he is wrong.
?
Midrash Shochar Tov (ch. 52) cites the episode of Doeg¡¯s treachery against David and Achimelech, the Kohen Gadol (High Priest). At a time when King Shaul was in pursuit of David and seeking to harm him, Doeg told Shaul that Achimelech had intentionally helped David to flee from Shaul, which was a lie. Doeg¡¯s slander brought about Achimelech¡¯s death (see I Shmuel chs. 21-22).
?
As the Midrash relates, David told Doeg, ¡°Is a man truly mighty when he sees his fellow at the edge of a pit and pushes him in, when he sees his fellow on top of a roof and pushes him off? On the contrary, a man deserves to be called a mighty warrior when his fellow is about to fall into a pit and he grasps his hand to prevent his fall or when he lifts the fallen man from the pit. But when you saw that Shaul was angry at me, you persisted in vilifying me.¡¯¡¯ Thus did David say, ¡°Why do you pride yourself with evil, O mighty warrior?¡¯¡¯ (Tehillim 52:3).
