Day 12 ¨C Ambiguous Statements?
?
?
A Jew is responsible for exercising caution in speech and not making statements which can be misinterpreted as being derogatory.
?
An example of an ambiguous statement that should not be said is: ¡°He¡¯s a well-meaning fellow,¡± which can mean, ¡°He¡¯s well-meaning but not very intelligent, or, ¡°He¡¯s well-meaning but his actions are wrong.¡± If one simply means, ¡°He¡¯s well-meaning and sincere,¡± then this should be made clear.
?
?

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Measure for Measure
?
The way in which one acts towards others determines the way in which Heaven will act towards him. For example, if one strives to overlook the hurt caused him, and if he acts towards others with kindness and compassion, then he awakens the Attribute of Compassion in Heaven. Hashem will judge him with mercy and he will be shown kindness from Above. As our Sages state: ¡°Whoever has compassion towards others will be shown compassion from Above¡± (Shabbos 151b); and ¡°Whoever refrains from exacting his measure [of retribution from others for the wrong they caused him] will have all his sins forgiven¡± (Rosh Hashanah 17a). Moreover, in his merit, Divine compassion will manifest itself upon the Jewish nation as a whole.
?
However, if it is one¡¯s way to be absolutely unrelenting towards others and to treat them without compassion, then he lends strength to the Attribute of Justice ¡ªtoward himself specifically, and to the entire Jewish nation as well. Heaven will be unrelenting regarding that person¡¯s sins, for ¡°With the measure that a person measures do they [i.e. Heaven] measure him¡± (Megillah 12b).
?
Our Sages state: ¡°Jerusalem was destroyed only because its inhabitants limited their decisions to the [letter of the] law of Torah¡± (Bava Metzia 30b). This seems difficult, for Scripture records many sins of which that generation was guilty. Our discussion sheds light on the matter. Had the people overlooked the wrong caused them, then Hashem would have forgiven them as well. However, they were absolutely unrelenting toward each other, demanding from one another whatever they could possibly extract according to the law ¡ªand Heaven judged them accordingly.

Day 11 ¨C Common Knowledge

?
?
A derogatory statement is considered loshon hora even when the information is common knowledge for, as stated above, to speak negatively of one¡¯s fellow Jew is shameful in itself.
?
Negative information about Jews appearing in newspapers may not be repeated.? Newspapers often publish articles based on hearsay and thus, one is not even permitted to believe such information if the newspaper is its only source.? Even after one has verified the information, he may nevertheless not repeat it.
?
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

?
Equal to All
?
Talmud Yerushalmi (Pe¡¯ah 1:1) states that the reward for studying Torah is equivalent to that of all other mitzvos combined, and the punishment for speaking loshon hora is equivalent to that of all other sins combined. Thus, the antithesis of Torah study, the greatest of all mitzvos, is loshon hora. Their respective primacy can be explained as follows:
?
Of the four basic elements of nature ¡ªfire, wind, water and earth ¡ªthe intangible (fire and wind) are far more powerful than the tangible (water and earth). Fire can engulf material objects and totally destroy them, and the power of wind is awesome, as it is written, ¡°A great and mighty wind which breaks apart mountains and shatters stones¡± (I Melachim?19:11).
?
The same is true in the spiritual realm. Torah study impacts in the Upper Worlds in a way that no other mitzvah can. This is because all other mitzvos are related to the physical ¡ª for example, to fulfill the mitzvah of tzitzis, one dons a garment, a material object; a lulav is held, a physical act; a shofar must be blown, etc. Torah study, however, is performed through the power of speech, which, essentially, is a function of the soul.1 This is why the reward of Torah study is equivalent to that of all other mitzvos combined.
?
The converse is true of sin. The spiritual damage caused by loshon hora is infinitely greater than that caused by other transgressions, because it is committed through the power of speech. Its effect in the Upper Spheres is awesome. Therefore, its punishment is equivalent to that of all other sins combined.
?
?

1. As mentioned above, Targum Onkelos translates ¡°and man became a living being¡±
(Bereishis 2:7), as ¡°and man became a speaking spirit.¡±

The Miracle of the Exodus
?
Thus taught Rabbi Elimelech of Lizensk: "At the pronouncement of laws, Holy Scripture always makes mention of the Exodus out of Egypt, and never of the creation of the world. How is this? Was not the creation out of a void a greater miracle than the Exodus? Understand, then, that the Creation, properly speaking, was not a miracle. All nature is God, and subject to Him, and whatever sprang into being at His behest, did so in a natural way. But the Exodus was a wonder, for to deal with the Egyptians according to their merits, God had to divest Himself, for the time being, of His goodness, and let evil prevail."

Time for Redemption
?
Rabbi Bunam commented upon Exodus 6:6 "I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burden of the Egyptians."
"A burden," he said is usually carried with ease after one has become accustomed to it. When the Lord observed that the Israelites were growing accustomed to their tasks and labored at them without complaint, then He deemed it high time they were liberated."

Is there anywhere in Jerusalem that is quiet?

Shalom

Is there anywhere in Jerusalem that is quiet? If not, is there anywhere in Israel that is quiet? If not what country has peace and quiet? The noise of the neighbours at all hours of night and day at a level that is not suitable for residential living but belongs only in a nightclub or music (aka noise) festival is destroying us. The police are not interested. What country permits noise at such levels until 11 pm at night? Does no-one know the dangers to health of noise pollution?

MY mother and I have both been in hospital due to fainting from our blood pressure going out of control thanks to the noise pollution. Added to this we have dreadful mold that the landlord refuses to clean or repair.

We HAVE to move urgently. Can anyone help us with Tzeddakah, Maaser, Join our ?

I can not take another sleepless night. My health has suffered as has my mother and my husband. Please help us to move. I can share a video of the level of the noise, how can any law permit this to happen in any residential area? Did you know that noise pollution affects even a fetus as it growth in it's mother's womb. Why does Israel IGNORE the health hazzards of noise???? Does anyone know that in order to function normally it is recommended to have 8 quality hours of sleep. If one has to get up at 6 am to begin your day how can noise until 11 pm be permitted. 11 pm to 6 am is less than 8 hours. That means that stealing sleep has become permitted, how can that possibly be??? Did you know that it takes time for the body to unwind after being exposed to loud noise which means that even if the noise is turned off at 11 pm a human being can not get to sleep immediately. Sleep deprivation is a health hazzard for every human being.

Please help us to move to somewhere that is quiet.

Single woman (cancer patient) on Shimoni Street in Katamon desperately needs someone to come and put together a closet as a chesed. This is urgent, as she can't clean for Pesach with her clothing everywhere and in a small space.

Day 9 ¨C Self-Incrimination

?
?
It is forbidden to relate derogatory information about someone even when the speaker mentions that he himself has the very same shortcoming or is guilty of having committed the same act.? This is derived from G-d¡¯s rebuke of the prophet Yeshayah for his having referred to himself as ¡°a man of impure lips dwelling among people of impure lips¡± (Yeshayahu 6:5).
?
Loshon hora cannot be spoken even when it is clear that one is not speaking out of malice or with intention to malign.? Thus, one cannot relate negative information about his loved ones.
?

?
Do Whatever You Can (II)

?
¡°Do you really think that you can avoid everything that must not be spoken? Why, you are a man of the world, you have dealings with scores of people!¡± This was another argument cited above, which can lead a person to totally ignore the concept of shmiras haloshon.
?
Again, we respond with an analogy: Let us suppose that I was hurrying somewhere to engage in a business enterprise. A man asks me, ¡°Why do you hurry? Do you think that this enterprise will make you one of the world¡¯s richest men, like So-and-so?¡± Surely I would reply, ¡°Is that a reason not to seek a livelihood for myself?!¡±
?
If this response is correct when material matters are concerned, then surely it applies when spiritual matters are at stake. If one feels that he cannot abide by the laws of forbidden speech with all their details and fine points, does this mean that he should refrain entirely from caring for his soul? Is it reason to allow oneself to, Heaven forbid, be counted among the ba¡¯alei loshon hora (habitual gossipers) who will not merit to bask in the glory of the Divine Presence (Sotah 42a)?
?
Reishis Chochmah (Sha¡¯ar HaAhavah ch. 54) relates that R¡¯ Moshe Cordovero 1 saw the author of Shushan Sodos in a dream [following the latter¡¯s passing], and he was shining like the light of a torch. The deceased revealed that this was in merit of his having avoided idle chatter while on this world. Should such merit be totally forfeited because one feels that to acquire it in its entirety is out of reach?
?
The wisest of men declared, ¡°Whatever you are able to do with your might, do it¡± (Koheles?9:10), meaning that even if one feels he cannot fulfill a given mitzvah in all its fine points, nevertheless, he should strive to fulfill it to the best of his ability. It is in this vein that our Sages derived from the verse, ¡°Then Moshe set aside three cities¡± (Devarim?4:41), that although those three cities could not afford refuge [to one who murdered inadvertently] until the three cities in the Land of Canaan had been set aside ¡ªand Moshe knew that he would not be permitted to enter the Land of Israel and set them aside ¡ªnevertheless, Moshe said: ¡°I will accomplish whatever is in my power to accomplish.¡±2

The Beautiful? Western Negev Desert?
We will travel through the heart of the majestic Western Negev in bloom as we visit Kibbutz Revivim. This beautiful oasis in the desert was established in 1943 by German and Italian refugees despite the British ban on Jewish immigration, land purchase, and settlement.
Taking advantage of existing Ottoman law, the young pioneers built a walled" settlement" overnight.? In the morning, they were the southernmost Jewish presence in the Land of Israel.?Surrounded by sand and Bedouins, they began building a community.
During the 1948 War of Independence, the tiny settlement was caught behind enemy lines as the Negev was conquered by the?Egyptians. Their desperate, successful battle against overwhelming forces?is legendary. They wrote history with their self-sacrifice and vision.
We will tour the kibbutz, including the original structures and defense posts, as the battle is reconstructed with the aid of a multimedia presentation.
?One of the greatest challenges for the young community was water. We will enjoy a special presentation about how they acquired water.?
We will see archeological evidence of how ancient residents of the area solved this problem.

The Shomron in Bloom and Glory?

We will be guests of the renewed community and yeshiva of Chomesh in the northern Shomron. In 2005, Chomesh and three other Jewish communities were uprooted as part of the expulsions of Gush Katif.?
The yeshiva students of Chomesh defied the? "No Jews allowed" edict.?
Enduring government expulsions and Arab terror attacks, they continued their Torah study.
?Finally, just over a year ago, the government legalized the study of Torah in Chomesh.??
Today, Chomesh is a community budding around the vibrant yeshiva.
We are invited to visit this amazing community and meet today's heroes and tomorrow's leaders of Am Yisrael.

We will have a guided tour of Mount Eival and the original altar of Yehoshua.
Escorted by the army, we will travel in an armored bus to the site bordering areas that? Israel relinquished with the Oslo Accords of 1993.
Archaeologist Adam Zertal discovered perhaps the most important Jewish site in the land of Israel. On the highest peak of Mt Eival, Joshua reaffirmed the mission of the Jewish Nation upon entering the land over 3.300 years ago. Amazingly, the altar that he built is intact.
?Here is where it all began.?
Today, instead of a major museum built around this most important symbol of? Jewish connection to our land,? the Palestinian Authority has been encroaching on the site, causing irreparable damage.?
Our?visit will?strengthen the Jewish connection to the site where our forefathers confirmed their allegiance to Torah as we entered the land.

Day 8 ¨C Past History

?
Another area involving loshon hora is that of past history.? It is forbidden to relate something about an individual¡¯s past which either the speaker or the listener considers shameful, though in reality it is not shameful at all.
?
Our Sages teach that ¡°at the place where baalei teshuvah (returnees to the path of Torah) stand, perfect tzaddikim (those who have always been righteous) cannot stand¡± (Berachos 34b).? Thus, there is nothing shameful about a baal teshuvah.? Nevertheless, it is forbidden to relate that someone is a baal teshuvah if either the speaker or the listener looks down at such people.? (Related laws regarding baalei teshuvah will be discussed in Day 20).

?
Do Whatever You Can (I)
?
A Torah scholar once posed the following question: If one has failed to concentrate while reciting the Shemoneh Esrei prayer and finds himself near its conclusion, with what approach can he inspire himself to pray the remainder of the prayer with proper concentration? The scholar offered a solution by way of a parable:
?
A young girl was standing in the marketplace with a large basket of apples for sale. Suddenly, a thief approached and began to snatch apples out of the basket. The girl became confused and stood helplessly, not knowing what to do. Someone who was watching from a distance called out to her, ¡°Why are you standing still? What are you waiting for ¡ªthat he should grab everything? Just as he is grabbing, so should you grab-? whatever you can get will still be yours!¡±
?
And so it is regarding prayer. If one was overcome by lethargy and mindless daydreaming at the start of the Shemoneh Esrei, and suddenly finds himself near the prayer¡¯s end without having ¡°grabbed any apples,¡± this does not mean that he should give up and leave himself with nothing. Rather, he should strive with all his inner strength to concentrate on the remaining blessings.
?
And so it is, exactly, with shmiras haloshon. You stumbled this morning and spoke the forbidden? Then stand ready this afternoon to overcome your evil inclination and refrain from forbidden talk. And if you fail in the afternoon, nevertheless, strengthen yourself to do battle once more tomorrow. Surely Hashem will help you to succeed, for ¡°one who seeks to purify himself is granted Heavenly assistance¡± (Shabbos 104a).

On Yom HaShoah (Thursday, April 24), we will be offering a special program at Beit Knesset Hanassi. We will present the extremely powerful film AMEN.?

This award-winning, highly acclaimed movie is the dramatization of an impossible-to-believe story. It is a film about the Nazi officer who tried to stop the Holocaust.?

He learned that the Zyklon B he was in charge of distributing was being sent to Auschwitz and other camps for the purpose of killing Jews. Over and over again, he risked his life attempting to get nations, international organizations and the Pope to halt the slaughter.?

This superb film is deeply moving, all the more so because it is based on a true story.?

The movie is in English and is a little over two hours in length. The program will begin at 2:00 pm.

The gathering will commence with the saying of ?? ??? ????? and the lighting of six commemorative candles.

There will be a lecture about the film after the screening. The talk will include more information about the actual history and the fate of SS-Obersturmf¨¹hrer Kurt Gerstein. There will also be an essay about the film, the complete story and Gerstein distributed to attendees.?
