Today's Inspiration

Adon Olam

The Kotzker Rabbi was asked: "Why do we begin Services with 'Adon Olam' and finish with?'Adon Olam'??"
He answered: "We do so in order to demonstrate that the conclusion of the Services does not imply we have praised the Lord sufficiently. No, it is fitting that we should repeat the Services again and again. There is no limit to the praise we ought render the Creator."

The Gerer Rabbi in his younger days was extremely poor, his father-in-law having been unsuccessful in business. His wife complained and entreated him to pray to the Lord for money. The Rabbi refused saying: "It is my desire to do the will of God, but not that God should do my will."

Tour to the Shomron with Shalom Pollack

"Three In One Tour" to the Shomron With Shalom Pollack

DATE: Wednesday, March 20

Experience Three Distinct Pearls of our Beloved Land and People

We will begin the day with a visit to Biblical ?Bet El where the earliest Tanach stories come alive.

Today, this holy and historic site is home to a large flourishing Jewish community in the hills of Binyamin.?
The attractive town, once barren and forlorn, is the exhilarating fulfillment of the Biblically prophesied return to the land.?The local council now offers an educational extravaganza using the latest technology to capture the history of this Biblical site.

After witnessing the fruits of the sacrifice of the founding generation of idealists, we will meet the next generation of Jewish heroes. We will meet the hilltop youth, the?handful of Jewish pioneers/heroes single-handedly guarding and expanding our hold on our beloved land.?

The hilltop youth live in?primitive conditions in extreme weather, surrounded by murderous Arabs and a hostile Israeli administration. Yet nothing shakes their determination in their mission on the part of Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.

We will have the honor of visiting a hilltop site where we will learn, be inspired, and support the extraordinary heroes who are writing our history today.

Finally, we will travel through the beautiful Judean desert to the area of Jericho where we will visit the new Jericho nature reserve which includes an oasis of springs and flora to delight our senses and soul.

Depart ?from the Inbal Hotel at 8:00 am
Return approx. 5:00 pm
Bring lunch
Cost: 230 shekels.

?
Day 163 ¨C When the Speaker Cannot be Stopped

?
When one finds himself in the company of someone speaking rechilus and finds it difficult to interrupt the speaker, he must leave. If one cannot bring himself to actually walk away, he must, at the very least, not pay attention to what is being said and must make it clear through facial expression that he disapproves of the discussion.
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

?
No Time To Spare

?
The message of Hillel¡¯s question And if I am for myself, what am I? goes further. If the average person were to make an accounting of how his regular day is spent, he would see that only a small part of his time is free for spiritual pursuits. How then can he allow these precious moments to slip by without using them to acquire for himself Torah and mitzvos, an eternal acquisition?
?
When a person works to provide his wife and children with their needs and pay for his children¡¯s Torah education, his efforts bear great fruit. He will receive reward not only for his hours of Torah study, but for his efforts at earning a livelihood as well, for all his strivings were directed toward one essential purpose ¡ª fulfilling Hashem¡¯s will.
?
Such is not the case, however, when one strives for a lifestyle of luxury, to live in an expensive home with lavish decor, and to dress his family in rich taste. In truth, such a person is not really toiling for himself, that is, for his soul¡¯s benefit ¡ª for whose will is he seeking to fulfill, if not his evil inclination? What good will such striving accomplish for his soul? The same can be said of those who labor until their old age so that they can leave a generous inheritance behind for their loved ones. Such effort does not benefit the soul.
?
Hillel exhorts us to use our precious time on this world wisely, and not to let the hours slip by without accomplishment. Let no one delude himself with the notion that a bit of Torah study, and a mitzvah here and there, is sufficient.
Keep reading Day 164, the lesson for Shabbos
SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM
?
Day 164 ¨C Avoid the Gossipmonger
?
?
?
here are, unfortunately, people who forever gossip, perhaps as a result of their inactivity and their need for social involvement. Unless one honestly feels that he can help such a person to mend his ways, he should avoid his company entirely. If contact with such a person unavoidable, it should be minimized to whatever degree possible.T

One must also avoid settings that are prone to discussions of gossip. Ideally, one should find a way to permanently change the nature of conversation at such settings so that those present will be spared the evils of rechilus.
?
?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Market Day
?
A merchant who conducts all his business at the regional market has plenty of time off during the long intervals when the market is closed. But can he vacation while the market is open? Certainly not ¡ª that is, if he intends to earn a decent livelihood so that he can provide for his family.
?
In the spiritual realm, this world is the ¡°market¡± and every day is ¡°market day.¡¯¡¯ It is in this world that one must acquire the merits which will earn him the light of the World to Come. If one approaches Torah and mitzvos with laziness and allows his days to pass by with little accomplishment, what will he bring with him when his days on this world are over?
?
King Shlomo exhorts us: ¡°Whatever you are able to do with your might, do it. For there is neither doing nor reckoning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave where you are going¡± (Koheles?9:10). A Jew must serve Hashem with the full strength of his spirit, and accomplish whatever is within his power, for the next world is the place of reward where the opportunity for accomplishment is no more. As the Sages comment to the verse, ¡°You shall observe the commandments... that I command you today, to perform them¡± (Devarim?7:11): today ¡ª in this life ¡ª is the time to perform the commandments, while their primary reward is reserved for tomorrow ¡ª that is, for the World to Come (Avodah Zara 4b).
?
How much there is to accomplish! One is not seeking to provide for himself for a few months¡¯ time or even for a few years, but for eternity! Of course, guiding one¡¯s children along the path of Torah is part of providing for oneself in the next world, and this too should be approached with great dedication and care. One who does not have the opportunity to raise children of his own in the way of Torah should strive to help educate other Jewish children. Whatever the nature of one¡¯s mission on this earth, let him go about fulfilling it in the best possible way.
?
[Hillel said:] ¡°And if not now, when?¡¯¡¯

The Choice of Poverty

Said Rabbi Nahum Tzernobiler: "Between poverty and wealth I always choose poverty. It is the best shield against egotism and every evil of spirit; it is the least costly, the most easily attainable; it need not struggle against jealousy and competition; it need answer no questions or suspicions; it is understood without comments and without explanations. I beg of you, my good friends, not to deprive me of this great treasure."
