Day 117 – Repentance
?
The standard order of teshuvah (repentance) for sins between man and God is: confession, regret and resolution never to repeat the act in the future. One who willfully listened as someone related loshon hora is required to engage
in this process.
?
If one actually believed the loshon hora, then the above steps must be preceded by a successful effort at convincing oneself that the information was not accurate. This applies even when the halachah permits listening to the information for a constructive purpose
but does not permit believing it as fact.
Generally, sins between man and his fellow require that one ask forgiveness. However, this does not apply when one has accepted loshon hora. So long as the listener has not acted on the basis of the report in any way that was harmful to the subject, there is
no need to approach the person for forgiveness. In fact, the person should not be informed that loshon hora was spoken about him, as it would serve no purpose other than to hurt his feelings, and may involve rechilus (speech which causes hatred – See Day 118).
?
?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
New Lease on Life
?
At times, the willingness to overlook and forgive can cause a person’s life on this world to be extended, even after Heaven has decreed that his time has come. The Talmud relates (Rosh Hashanah 17a):
?
R’ Huna, the son of R’ Yehoshua, fell ill. R’ Pappa went to visit him. Upon seeing that he was unconscious, R’ Pappa told them [R’ Huna’s attendants], “Prepare provisions for him [i.e. ready his burial shrouds].’’ In the end, R’ Huna recovered. They [R’ Huna’s
attendants] asked him [R’ Huna], “What did you see [while unconscious]?’’ He told them, “Indeed, that is how it was [that death had been decreed upon me]. But the Holy One, Blessed is He, instructed them, ‘Because he does not exact his measure, therefore,
do not be exacting with him.’ As it is written, ‘He forgives transgressions and passes over sins’ (Michah 7:18) — whose sin does He forgive? One who passes over sins.’’
?
Therefore, one should cling to this sacred attribute constantly. In this way, it will be good for him in this world and in the World to Come.

Day 118 – Rechilus: A Definition?????????????????
?
While the verse “Do not go as a gossipmonger among your people” (Vayikra 19:16), prohibits all forms of loshon hora, the term “gossipmonger,” refers specifically to rechilus, information that potentially can cause ill will between
Jews. Whereas loshon hora that is derogatory can cause others to lose respect for the subject, rechilus can cause damage to relationships between the subject and his fellow Jews.
?
It is forbidden to tell someone that an individual:? did something to harm him; spoke loshon hora against him; doesn’t like him; or doesn’t respect him, since such statements would, in all probability, cause the listener to feel ill will towards that individual.

Trust in Hashem
?
In developing the quality of shmiras haloshon, one must strive to forever strengthen himself in matters of bitachon, trust in God. Bitachon is a sacred and vital component of Divine service as a whole, and is crucial for proper observance of the laws of Shmiras
haloshon.
?
For example, let us suppose that someone does something to slight someone else’s honor or affect his livelihood in some way. The victim’s heart burns with a strong desire to make known the wrong done to him. He finds it difficult to quell this desire. Then,
he begins to reflect upon the Sages’ teaching that no one can affect that which has been Divinely ordained for his fellow, be it a financial gain or mark of honor, even by a hairsbreadth (Yoma 38a). His desire is quelled.
?
David said: “Trust in Hashem and do good, that you may dwell in the land and nourish [yourself] with faithfulness” (Tehillim 37:3). David first exhorts us to trust in Hashem and only then to do good, for Divine trust is a solid foundation upon which any good
endeavor should be established.

Inviting you to take part in the next 40 day gratitude project for women starting iyH January 23rd ?? ??? for those of you who would like to hop on board!?
They say that crying and begging Hashem is one thing but thanking Him opens new doors in heaven. When we are thankful we bring more joy and reasons to be grateful into our lives and the lives of the people around us. And gratitude is healthy for the mind, body and soul.
The way it works is that you take a couple of minutes each day to thank Hashem through words, writing, a grateful spirit or whichever way you prefer. Include things you are happy about and not so happy about in your life. Being grateful for the whole lot. This is powerful. You are welcome to share your gratitudes during the project or to share miracles you see along the way. Gratitude does invite miracles. I will share the gratitudes you send me with the group, without your name, along with the daily gratitude reminder. There is something incredible about 40 days. And doing this together. Gratitude is a powerful prayer bringing us into the beauty of the moment!
Please let me know if you would like to participate. Email and WhatsApp options available for the project. There is no fee.?
Blessings!

Day 116 – The Habitual Sinner????????????
?
The prohibition of accepting loshon hora does not apply when the subject is known to regularly engage in the negative behavior under discussion. Thus, if on a number of occasions one has personally witnessed an individual commit
a particular sin, he would be permitted to believe that the person committed that sin again. The Chofetz Chaim seems to suggest that one would even be permitted to believe the person has committed a different sin. When a person is known to totally disregard
the Torah and its mitzvos one may certainly accept a report that he committed any sin.
?
If one is known to regularly transgress a particular sin out of temptation, one would be allowed to believe that he transgressed it again, but would be required to reject a claim that this time it was done maliciously.
?
?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Forgive and Forget
?
Even if all that one would gain through silent acceptance of humiliation is a lessening of punishment for a single sin, it would be well worthwhile. In fact, the gain is far greater, as stated in the Talmud:
?
Rava said: Whoever refrains from exacting his measure [i.e. from responding to the hurt caused him], [the Heavenly Tribunal] removes from him all his sins, as it is written, “He forgives transgressions and passes over sins” (Michah 7:18). Whose sin does He
forgive? One who passes over sins [committed against himself] (Rosh Hashanah 17a).
?
Rava taught that even one’s willful sins committed in a state of spiritual rebellion, find atonement when one refrains from “exacting his measure.” However, to be worthy of such atonement, one must demonstrate a corresponding degree of forgiveness; that is,
he must bear no ill will towards those who have caused him hurt, even when he knows for a fact that the hurt was inflicted maliciously.
?
Of course, such atonement is dependent upon the individual’s sincere resolve to refrain from committing these sins in the future.

Day 114 – “Innocent Remarks”
?
There are times when halacha accepts as fact “innocent” remarks, i.e. statements made in passing without the speaker being aware of the consequences of his words. As a rule, people do not lie unnecessarily, so that when a person
does not realize that he is saying something of significance, it can be assumed that he is telling the truth.
?
Halacha grants such statements the status of testimony in two instances:
?
1) Where it is certain that ultimately the true story will be revealed to all. People do not fabricate tales when it is clear that their lies will be revealed as such.
?
2) To establish that an individual is no longer alive.
?
“Innocent” negative statements are not granted any such legitimacy. They are loshon hora and one is not permitted to believe them.
?

Growth Through Tribulation
?
The Sages teach:
?
Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov said: One should feel a sense of gratitude toward the Holy One, Blessed is He, when suffering comes upon him. Why? Because suffering draws a person close to Him, as it is written, “Hashem reproves the one whom He loves” (Mishlei 3:12).
?
When suffering comes upon a person, he should accept it and withstand [the test], for its reward is infinite (Midrash Tanchumah, Parashas Ki Seitzei 2).
?
“Wait silently for [the salvation of] Hashem, and wait longingly for Him” (Tehillim 37:7). Place your hope in the Holy One, Blessed is He. If He brings afflictions upon you, do not demonstrate disdain; rather, accept your lot like [one would accept] musical
instruments [(the Hebrew word for) “wait longingly” can homiletically be related to “flutes”] (Yalkut Shimoni, Tehillim 729).
?
To accept insult without bitterness, with the knowledge that all that transpires is an expression of Divine will, is to accept a form of affliction, as the passage above states: [Those who are insulted and do not insult ...], who act out of love and are glad
in their affliction.1 The reward for such acceptance is without measure.

Once, the tzaddik R’ Zalman of Volozhin (disciple of the the Vilna Gaon) was traveling with his brother, R’ Chaim. When they arrived at a certain inn, the innkeeper
spoke harshly to them and refused to grant them a room for the night. Later, as they resumed their journey, R’ Chaim noticed his brother crying. “Why are you crying?’’ he asked. “Did you then pay attention to the innkeeper’s words? I ignored them completely!”
R’ Zalman replied: “Heaven forfend that I should cry over being insulted. I am crying because I sense a slight inner hurt as a result of his words. I cry that I have not yet attained the level of ‘Those who are insulted ... and are glad in their affliction’
” (from Sefer Toldos Adam).

Manners in Drinking
Said Rabbi Bunam: "One should not gulp down his glass of water, but should drink slowly, even as he should eat slowly. Understand that we are not mere animals, and , even though we must feed our body, we must do so in a mannerly way, in order that we may display pur superiority over the animals. This discipline will aid your soul. Especially in drinking water we are in danger of imitating the animals, since we drink it as we find it in its natural state, without preparing it for human use."

Day 113 – Exception to the Rule
?
We have already seen that one may not believe even his spouse or close confidants when they relate negative information about others. At most, he may consider the possibility that the information might be true.
?
The Talmud states that one exception to this rule is where the listener considers the speaker to be a man of unusual integrity whose words are weighed very carefully. Such a person can be trusted to relate an incident exactly as it happened, to the extent that
the listener can consider himself as having witnessed it, and thus may accept the report as fact. Nevertheless, since the decision that the speaker is trustworthy is a personal one made by the listener, he cannot pass the information on to others as if he
had witnessed it – even for a constructive purpose.
?
The Chofetz Chaim is of the opinion that today no one can claim to have the degree of integrity necessary for his words to be accepted as fact, and it is therefore forbidden for anyone to believe a negative statement on the basis of someone else’s report.
?
?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Three Levels
?
Those who are insulted and do not insult, who hear their disgrace and do not respond, who act out of love and are happy in their affliction, regarding them does Scripture state (Shoftim 5:31): “But they who love Him shall be like the sun going forth in its
might” (Shabbos 88b).
?
The commentators understand this passage as enumerating three distinct levels of reaction to insult:
?
(1) Those who are insulted and do not insult, but they do respond in some way.
?
(2) Those who hear their disgrace and do not respond at all, lest their response evoke further insult and disparagement. In their hearts, though, they harbor bitterness toward their abuser.
?
(3) Those who act out of love and are happy in their affliction, meaning, whose love of Hashem impels them not to respond to insult and to accept their affliction [i.e. disgrace] with gladness.
?
It is when a person attains this third and highest level that he merits the great reward with which the passage concludes. Such attainment is indicative of his sanctity of soul and pure faith in Hashem, Who guides the happenings of mankind, as it is written,
“For His eyes are upon the ways of man” (Iyov 34:21). It is with recognition of Hashem’s involvement in all man’s affairs, and belief that whatever difficulties one encounters are ultimately for the good, that a person is able to bear insult without ill will
and with a happy heart. |

A Warning
The Khelmer Maggid reproved some wealthy men for being niggardly to the poor. He said: "We read (Deuteronomy 15:11): 'For the poor shall never cease out of the land.' It follows, therefore, that if the poor should starve to death, some of you will grow poor in order to justify God's statement."

Day 112 – Rumors
?
Halacha allows for certain rumors to be reckoned with, but never are they to be accepted as fact.
?
It is important to note the halachik qualifications which distinguish a rumor that may have some credence from that which is mere character assassination. If the subject is known to have enemies in the community who are very possibly the source of the rumors,
it may not be granted any legitimacy. Even if everyone in the community has a favorable opinion of the subject, the rumor would have to circulate throughout the community for one and a half days without losing strength before it could be taken seriously.
?
When a rumor does seem to have validity, halacha allows for it to cast doubt on the status of the person(s) involved; e.g. where the report concerns the subject’s status as a kohen or similar issues of lineage.
?
The unfortunate reality is that rarely is a rumor anything more than wide-scale loshon hora. Even when halacha grants a rumor some degree of validity, it cannot be accepted as fact.
?

The Quality of Acceptance
?
In striving to develop the quality of shmiras haloshon, one must place great emphasis on reacting toward any situation with savlanus, that is, to be tolerant of whatever negativity is thrown one’s way. In the words of Avos D’R’ Nosson (41:11): “Condition yourself
to tolerate distress, and be forgiving of insult.’’ Through such character development, the quality of shmiras haloshon is easily attainable. Conversely, one who lacks savlanus will forever be torn by the need to relate the wrongs which others have done against
him. At times, he will prevail in this struggle; other times, he will fail.
?
A savlan is capable of bearing insult in silence. He tells himself that whatever occurs is an expression of Divine will, and that in reality his own sins are the true causes of his being shamed. When one accepts disgrace in this way, totally and sincerely,
Hashem surely elevates his stature in this world and in the next. |
