KNOW MY NAME by Chanel Miller

The author is “Emily Doe”, the victim in the notorious sexual assault case on the Stanford campus. The defendant, a student on the swim team from a privileged background, was convicted. But the judge’s sentence resulted in the defendant serving only three months in a county lock-up. The case shocked and outraged much of America. As a result of the sentence, laws were changed and passed and the judge was removed from the bench.

Ms. Miller writes beautifully and movingly of what she went through during the criminal process of the perpetrator. Her story demonstrates a culture and system biased to protect perpetrators and indicts a criminal justice system that fails the most vulnerable. But the book ultimately is about the courage, strength and determination of a young woman who never asked or wanted to be put in the situation she was.

RESPONSA FROM THE HOLOCAUST by Rabbi Ephraim Oshry

The questions reveal not only the danger and the knowledge of imminent death that these Jews had but equally their commitment to Halacha, to observant Judaism for as long as they lived. The questions and answers are powerful and poignant beyond description.
