Day 174 ¨C Public Revelations and Suspicious Silence

???????
One may not believe rechilus even if it was related in public. The fact that a person is unafraid to publicly relate information that is cause for ill will is not proof of its authenticity and certainly not of its accuracy.
???????????
Furthermore, even if an accusation is made in the presence of the subject and the accused fails to respond, one may not interpret his silence as self-incrimination. The person may have been flustered and at a loss for words, of he may have chosen to remain silent rather than cause an escalation of the verbal abuse hurled at him.

The Way of Our Ancestors

?
The Midrash states that four sources of merit figured prominently in the redemption from Egypt: The Jews did not adopt Egyptian names, did not speak in the way of the Egyptians, were not guilty of immorality and did not speak loshon hora (Vayikra Rabbah 32:5).
?
Tanna D¡¯Vei Eliyahu Rabbah (ch. 23) relates:
?
When the Jews were in Egypt, they assembled and sat down together, for they were united as one. They established a covenant to do kindness with one another; to safeguard in their hearts the covenant of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov; to serve their Father in Heaven alone; not to forsake the language of their father Yaakov¡¯s house; and not to learn the language of the Egyptians, so as not to follow the ways of idol worshipers.
?
The Egyptians would ask them: ¡°Why do you not serve our gods, for if you did, your workload would be lightened?¡¯¡¯ The Jews responded: ¡°Did our forefathers forsake our Father in Heaven, that we should now do the same?¡¯¡¯
?
When the Jews circumcised their sons, the Egyptians suggested, ¡°Perhaps if you do not observe this law, your difficult labor will be lightened.¡¯¡¯ The Jews responded: ¡°Did our forefathers forget the covenant into which they entered with our Father in Heaven, that we should now do the same?¡¯¡¯
?
When Jews would marry and celebrate the Seven Days of Feasting that follow, the Egyptians asked, ¡°Why do you celebrate? Soon you will be forced to perform your slave labor!¡¯¡¯ The Jews responded, ¡°We shall celebrate ¡ª you can do with us as you please. Those who are destined to die, shall die. Those who are destined to live, shall live.¡¯¡¯
?
Let us follow in the ways of our ancestors, to do kindness with one another and faithfully uphold their covenant to serve no one but Hashem. Let us pay no heed to enticements and arguments to the contrary, just as the Jews paid no heed to the Egyptians¡¯ words.
?
May we merit the fulfillment of the prophecy, ¡°As in the days when you departed Egypt, will I show him wonders¡¯¡¯ (Michah?7:15) ¡ª speedily and in our time.

Turn About
?
Rabbi Nathan David Sidlovtzer, son of Rabbi Yerachmiel, said: "We read: 'As far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us' (Pslam 103:12). When a man stands facing the east, he needs but a turning about to face west. Likewise a sinner needs but a slight mental turning-about to be far removed from his transgressions."

The Contrition
?
Said Rabbi Schmilke: "He who regrets the transgressions may do so for two reasons: one, that he stands in fear of punishment; the other, that he is contrite for having displeased his beloved Father in Heaven, In the first instance, the sin becomes suspended, but a record of it remains. In the second, it is thoroughly erased, and no trace remains, as if no sin had ever been committed."

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM
?
Day 171 ¨C Divisive Insights??????
???
?
If a person was present when a statement was made or an act was committed by an individual, and then someone else who was present points out to the person that the act was intended to hurt him, he may not believe this interpretation of what had transpired. Not only is it wrong to believe a report that is rechilus, it is also prohibited to accept an insight that transforms an innocent occurrence into a malicious act.
?
?

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
A Contradiction
?
The gossiper should be filled with shame over his blatant disregard for the transgressions which he regularly commits, for surely he believes that every letter of the Torah is true and God-given.
?
Imagine that the gossiper were called to the Torah and the portion to be read contained one of the verses which prohibits loshon hora, such as ¡°Do not go as a gossipmonger among your people¡± (Vayikra?19:16); ¡°Accursed is one who strikes his fellow stealthily¡± (Devarim 27:24); ¡°Remember that which Hashem, your God, did to Miriam¡± (Bamidbar 24:9); ¡°Do not accept a false report¡± (Shemos 23:1); etc. As the gossiper looks at the scroll¡¯s words before reciting the opening blessing he notices that one of the letters in one of the above verses is missing a point, rendering it invalid. Surely he would not recite the blessing, for he knows that in order to be valid the Torah scroll must be complete, and that not a single letter may be deficient in any way. The gossiper clearly believes that every letter of the holy Torah is true. Why then does he totally disregard these verses in practice?!
?
As mentioned above, a person should choose at least one mitzvah to which he will dedicate himself with utmost devotion. There is particular benefit in selecting the mitzvah to guard one¡¯s tongue as one¡¯s singular mitzvah. We can liken this to earning a livelihood. The average person would prefer to have a steady livelihood which earns him a modest but predictable profit, as opposed to a business which may bring him large profits, but without any sort of regularity or predictability. The mitzvah of shmiras haloshon can accrue merit day and night in virtually any situation. Whether one is at home, in the study hall, market, or at a social gathering, he is forever presented with opportunities to refrain from speaking and listening to the forbidden. And as the Sages teach, ¡°One who sits and does not commit a sin is granted reward equivalent to that of one who performs a mitzvah¡± (Kiddushin 39b).

The Unworried Mind
?
Said The Kobriner: "In Psalm 90:3 we read: 'You turn man to dejection and say: 'Repent O' children of men.' But I say: 'O Lord, if You turned man to dejection, how can You expect him to repent? Grant him his necessities, and his heart will be free to turn to You.' "

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM
?
Day 170 ¨C Believing Constructive Information????????????
?
Unlike listening to rechilus, which is justified when the information is pertinent, believing rechilus is not permissible regardless of one¡¯s purpose. Even if one must inquire about a person with whom he is considering entering into a relationship, he may not believe as fact any negative information that has been told about the person. Never may one develop feelings of hatred towards a person on the basis of information heard about him ¨C even though the information was obtained in a permissible manner.
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Most Neglected

?
Above, we referred to shmiras haloshon as a meis mitzvah, a mitzvah which is woefully ignored by many who do not reckon it as a mitzvah at all. Though this needs no proof, we will nevertheless demonstrate that it is true.
?
There are people who find nothing wrong with saying the most derogatory remarks about others, for no good reason. When asked, ¡°Why do you speak loshon hora?¡¯¡¯ they respond with dozens of reasons as to why their words are not loshon hora at all! If the questioner then responds with irrefutable proof that, indeed, the statements voiced do constitute loshon hora, they respond, ¡°Well, it¡¯s not loshon hora when said about So-and-so ¡ª it¡¯s a mitzvah to speak ill of him!¡¯¡¯ The more one tries to convince them that they err, the more they heap calumny upon the subject of their ill-spoken words.
?
Does this happen with other sins? Does an otherwise observant Jew who has been caught eating something forbidden respond to his reprover by grabbing another piece of the food and stuffing it into his own mouth? Certainly not. Why, then, does this occur with the sin of loshon hora which, as we have shown in previous chapters, is among the worst sins in the Torah? The answer is that this very serious matter has become hefker, disregarded, and trampled upon by many. We speak not only of habitual gossipers. There are many people who are not given to gossip, yet do not consider loshon hora as serious as most other sins. Therefore, they turn a deaf ear when told to refrain from speaking the forbidden.
?
There is no greater meis mitzvah in our time.
