Cataract surgery caution

These are the last two paragraphs from the following link.

It may be that a causal relationship be?tween uncomplicated cataract surgery and optic neuropathy will not be con?clusively established in the literature, said Dr. Bhatti. However, the experts said, there¡¯s enough evidence to justify proceeding with caution as well as to support counseling prospective patients with a history of optic neuropathy who are electing to undergo cataract surgery in the fellow eye.

As Dr. Bhatti noted, ¡°Thankfully, optic neuropathy following cataract surgery is relatively uncommon¡ªagain, [the incidence is] in that 1 in 1,000 to 3,000 range. But if patients have previ?ously experienced either garden-variety spontaneous NAION or PCSON in one eye and they¡¯re considering cataract surgery in the other, it¡¯s important for the surgeon to provide full disclosure and counsel them on the possible in?crease of risk in that fellow eye.¡±

Noted in my last M.D. visits ..

1/ thanks to trial lawyers .. anything possibly risky .. avoided at all costs. (Emergencies -- different matter)

2/ Thus .. in risky matters .. PATIENT, fully informed .. must make final decision. As in, 40-page lawsuit-waiver forms.

For what it's worth:

I was advised back in 2007 that since they no longer use epinephrine in that surgery that the danger
of loss has been lessened.

Since I have a cataract in my remaining non-NAION eye that is of interest. However, they go by your
existing visual acuity and at 20/20 in that eye, I do not see it as a high concern at present.

Many of us have posted this .. in ANY surgical situation .. face-to-face, providers involved MUST acknowledge your NAION. And in writing. With witnesses.

Or leave.

Providers rush about, today. Their insurers will thank you, for being CLEAR with them.

Would you say for even a skin biopsy that there should be NO EPINEPHRINE in the local anesthesia used?? Thanks.

Talk to your N.O. and M.D.

I'm not an M.D.
