Board of Directors Meeting Highlights
The NAFA Board of Directors held a meeting via Zoom on Monday, February 21, 2022. Below are some highlights from the meeting. Full meeting minutes will be posted once approved by the Board. 1. Update on Laser Level Measuring: As previously communicated, NAFA will be discontinuing the use of the wicket as the official measuring device on April 1st, 2022. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions affecting several regions, not all judges and competitors have had an opportunity to practice with the new system. Effective April 1st, 2022, laser level measuring will only be valid for the tournament weekend in which it was obtained. Permanent Measurements cannot be obtained at this time. NAFA is evaluating possible improvements to the ruler and completing the certification of all judges. We will make another announcement regarding the timeframe as to when Permanent Measurements will become available. We strongly encourage competitors to request practice measurements using the new laser level method. This will help both our judges and the dogs be more comfortable when it comes time for temporary and permanent measurements. As a reminder, these practice measurements do not count towards anything and are not stored anywhere (there is no ¡°risk¡± for the dog/handler). 2. Update on 30¡± Wide Jumps Usage: Several host clubs requested an exemption from the Executive Director to use wider jumps at tournaments before April 1st. The primarily feedback has been positive from competitors. As a reminder, Beginning April 1, 2022, NAFA will allow jumps to have an inside width of either 24 inches OR 30 inches. Host clubs are to declare their chosen width at the time of sanctioning their event. All jumps in all rings of racing must run with the declared width for the entirety of the tournament. Events already sanctioned for April 2022 and beyond will be assigned 24¡± jumps unless NAFA is notified otherwise (i.e. revised sanctioning). Host clubs should contact Karen Oleson if they plan to use 30¡± jumps at flyballsanc@... NAFA is planning on purchasing wider bases for use at CanAm. 3. Since CanAm, we¡¯ve had feedback from AKC. ESPN is very happy with the viewership response when the CanAm footage was broadcast. They would like to film an additional event, such as an invitational in the spring. There will be no cost to NAFA to produce and film this event. We are pleased that AKC and ESPN is excited to continue to partner with NAFA to livestream CanAm. Please email flyball@... with any questions or concerns.

Further Clarification for NAFA's recent announcement to allow 24-inch or 30-inch jumps starting April 1
Per our recent communication the NAFA Board has decided to allow host clubs the option of using the current 24 inch width or new 30 inch width jumps at their tournaments effective April 1, 2022. We have received additional comments and questions regarding this communication and we would like to take this opportunity to provide further clarification. Q: Is this a trial period or is this a permanent rule change? This is not a trial period rather it is a permanent rule change. An updated version of the rule book will be released reflecting this change by April 1, 2022. Q: Why not just move to 30 inch jumps as the standard for everyone instead of making this optional? Moving to 30 inch jumps will incur additional costs for host clubs to minimally purchase new bases and slats and even in some cases new stanchions. We want to allow host clubs to decide what works best for them and allow them time to raise funds to purchase the new equipment should they choose to move to the wider jumps. Preliminary feedback shows that while some believe 30 inch jumps are safer (more room should 2 dogs meet at the jump to both go over the jump), there are some that believe the 24 inch jumps are safer (more room for the dog to bail out and go around the jump if they meet at the jumps). There is no definitive proof for either argument at this time. Therefore we believe allowing clubs and competitors to choose what works best for them, just as they do with the box width and run back space, makes the most sense at this time. NAFA is in the middle of an election cycle and we felt it would be important for the newly elected board to be able to weigh in on this issue before making any further changes to the standard. Q: Will the 30 inch jump width be made a permanent, mandatory requirement at some time? It is certainly possible that once we have more feedback from the flyball community at large a more standard change may be implemented. That will be a decision for a future Board of Directors to make. Q: What will the jump width be at NAFA CanAm 2022? That has not yet been decided. Minimally by the time entries open for CanAm 2022, if not sooner, the jump width to be used will be clearly identified.

CanAm Mask Update
Hi Everyone! I wanted to send this out early as we are preparing to leave for CanAm shortly. We continue to let Health Canada and the CDC guide our policies. As of today, there is a clear indication that COVID community transmission is high enough that the CDC is recommending that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people wear masks indoors, so our CanAm policy will follow suit, and we will be requiring masks be worn indoors at CanAm. This should not come as a surprise, as I indicated this was very likely in my previous update on the subject a few weeks ago. So, if you are inside the West Pavillion or Indiana Farmers Coliseum, you need your masks on for CanAm this year. You obviously don't need it on when you are eating or drinking - but make an effort to do those activities in your crating area. Our expectation is people handle this in a mature and responsible manner, and if they do this will go smoothly. We realize masks often slip out of place in the racing ring, but adjust and carry on. Make an effort and it will be fine. If individuals or clubs have a blatant disregard for the mask policy or simply refuse to wear one, they will be excused from the event and will be required to leave. If you have a valid medical exemption for wearing a mask, submit that as soon as possible so we can evaluate and plan accordingly. Valid exceptions should originate from qualified professionals on clinic stationary. That means a podiatrist or chiropractor should not be submitting masks exceptions. Additionally, falsified documentation will be subject to disciplinary action. I don't have an email address for all the competitors coming. I am sending this to the people that registered clubs and teams for the event, plus posting on our Facebook page and to the NAFANews. Please share this information with your teammates that are attending. Club owners are responsible for the behaviour of their team members. See you at CanAm! We are looking forward to our return to Indianapolis! Neil Flood CanAm Tournament Director & NAFA Executive Director
