Notes for this week's club meeting
Sorry about not being able to get checked into the simplex net. Looks like I can't use the antenna in the front of my house for simplex, it just won't hit due to all the townhouses. This weeks meeting will cover Meshtastic. For those that aren't familiar, Meshtastic is a LoRa based network that is designed to pass short messages between nodes. There can be repeaters and user nodes, and they can be connected to computers and MQTT for message transfer via the Internet. I'll be presenting the basics of Meshtastic and showing some of my nodes and how they work. I'll also talk about how SLCOARES is working on implementing this as part of a disaster plan, as well as how to make a BBS. If anyone has an existing Meshtastic node, please bring it so we can show how the app works. -- Kris Gainsforth KB0STG/WRYJ827 President, Mountain View Amateur Radio Club https://n7mrc.org

Meeting presentation for April - looking for feedback 6
I'm planning on talking about Meshtastic this month as part of a series on mesh networks I'm developing. I have a few devices I will bring in and I also have a BBS on Meshtastic I'll leave at home to see if I can hit it from the fire station. I'm bringing a LilyGO T-Beam and 2 RAKWireless kits. Does anyone else have a different board/device that they could bring? I would like to show examples and show some comms. -- Kris Gainsforth KB0STG/WRYJ827 President, Mountain View Amateur Radio Club https://n7mrc.org

7QP 2025
7QP is next Week-end. The world wants to talk to hams in the 7 call sign area of the USA which includes Utah. Our goal here in Utah is to have hams active in every county in Utah for the full 48 hours of 7QP. Darryl is the Utah area captain and has sent us this information. If you have questions you can call me. This is one of my favorite HF Radio activities. I try to set up my station on the county line between two counties that seldom have a ham station. It can be great fun. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Darryl <darryl@...> Date: Mon, Mar 31, 2025 at 1:44 PM Subject: 7QP 2025 -- Gregg McArthur

2 items regarding the Saturday race in Riverton 9
Hi Everyone, First, apparently I can't send Google Sheets to groups.io in the way I thought it worked so just take a screen shot with your phone of my recent posting if you want. I had originally printed out the list from Kris for myself but found that in low light conditions and especially in windy and rain conditions that having this info on paper does not work so well so I'm going to keep it on my phone. Second, last year when I worked the Riverton race I was up at the Start/Finish with Gabriel and I'm not entirely sure what I need to do when I'm working at one of the water stations this year. Can someone tell us? I have heard that we are recording the bib numbers of the runners as they come thru. Does that mean we have a list already of all the numbers and we are checking them off on the list OR are we writing them down as they come thru? I need to know if we need to bring a pad of paper or a clip board or something. I did buy 4 clipboards for the club to use for this race and I'll bring those tomorrow. And since it is a race, I assume the runners are not stopping for us to record their bib numbers. In fact since this is a water stop they may or may not not be stopping at all. So how do we record the bib numbers when a group of them go by together at a running speed? Any one have some ideas? I'm sure there are other club members working tomorrow who are also new to the races or to the position they have tomorrow. I'd like someone to give us some advice about what exactly we need to do. Thanks, Steve Pabin MVARC Secretary N7ZZS

2025 Riverton Half-Marathon Foot Race Roster 3
To the MVARC members, I just created a spreadsheet in Google Sheets of the members who signed up to help on the Riverton race this Saturday. I sent the spreadsheet to our groups.io account so I hope you are able to access it there. Here is what it looks like. You should be able to open and edit it in Google Sheets if I set it up correctly. Please add your phone number if it's not there. And then when the final version is on screen in your phone, zoom in to select the first 3 columns and take a screenshot and then you can refer back to the screenshot and not have to leave Google Sheets open during the race. The phone number column is there if someone can not be reached by radio. Hope this helps. Steve Pabin MVARC Secretary N7ZZS

General info about marathon races and a surprise ending 2
As you know the race Saturday in Riverton is broken up into 3 concurrent races: the 5K, 10K and the half-marathon. I found the following information on the website Joggo.run (yes, it is .run and not .com) They also have an app for iPhone called Joggo. And the app can be placed on the watch also. 5K = 3.1 miles Most runners complete it is 30 to 40 minutes. Average pace of 10 minutes per mile. 10K = 6.2 miles Most runners complete it is 60 to 80 minutes. Average pace of 10 minutes per mile. 1/2 marathon = 13.1 miles Most runners complete it is 2.5 to 4 hours. Average pace less then 10 minutes per mile. The full marathon = 26.2 miles but WHY such an odd number? From this website: history.com, we find the marathon was originally 25 miles until this happened... For the next few Olympics, the length of the marathon remained close to 25 miles. But at the 1908 Games in London, the course was extended, allegedly to accommodate the British royal family. Reportedly, Queen Alexandra requested that the race start on the lawn of Windsor Castle (so the littlest royals could watch from the window of their nursery, according to some accounts) and finish in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium—a distance that happened to be 26.2 miles (26 miles and 385 yards). The random boost in mileage ended up sticking, and in 1921 the length of a marathon was formally standardized at 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers). That's all folks, Steve Pabin N7ZZS

Half Marathon updates - 12 March 2025 19
Evening everyone! DST changes mess up my clock, for sure. Here's where we are at: Brian Johanson might not be able to run net control due to work schedule changes. If this is correct, I would ask Alex Marcum to take net control. Jarin, if you are still available to scribe, your efforts would still be appreciated. At this point, we need 6 more people available to run relay. It's a Word doc, but the maps are really detailed. He's asking we have 2 at the 5K turnaround point since it doesn't reach the first water stop. If we can't get 2, it might be a situation where we do 1 at the 5K/1 or 2 at WS1. Net starts at 8am on Saturday the 22nd. Net should conclude and release everyone around 12:30 based on history. Trial run will be similar to last year, Monday before at 8pm? Everyone on their spots, ready to test equipment. If there is something else that I am missing, would the people who have run this before please chime in? I just want to make sure we have enough supplies/equipment to make this work for everyone.
