Question for you guys 12
Starting maybe a year ago I would occasionally get an email QSL card from someone I worked. I didn’t think they were worth anything for DXCC, so after taking a look I deleted them. Now I get several of these a day—maybe a notable fraction of the recent QSOs. So my question is, for the DXers in the group, what do you do when you receive these email QSLs? If you respond, how to you generate your electronic QSL? Is this a passing fad that will blow past in a while? I don’t want to be rude to the senders, but I have no idea how/why one would respond with an email QSL in return. I’m wondering if this is the future and I need to get on board, or if (as I’ve been interpreting it) it a useless exercise that some folks seem to do simply because some logging software offered the option. What say all the Yodas out there? Dave UW

why Elecraft? 4
Howdy, If you recall, during Field Day setup I noticed that one of the filter knobs on my K3 had cracked. I glued it, and we used the radio for field day. I sent an email to K3 support and told them the knob cracked and I needed another. Their response was: "A knob set is on its way. Thanks for choosing Elecraft." They sent me all four of the knobs for free. For a radio I bought in 2010. Customer for life. Jeff n1kdo

2024 N4N Field Day 13
Had another fun Field Day weekend! A lot of things went really well—special thanks to Eddie for all his work getting the software and radios playing nicely together. He also got my new IC9700 set up with satpc32 and the azi-ele rotor so making a satellite contact was so simple even a computer dolt could do it, bleary eyed a bit fuzzy headed, alone, at 1:30 am. ? Also thanks to Joe AJ2Y and Eric W4MC for helping me work through several failed attempts at sending message traffic. Finally got that figured out and working reliably (using HF rather than 2m packet) this past Wednesday. Thanks too to Jeff1 for setting up his raspberry pi widget to constantly rotate among screens showing pie charts of qsos by mode or operator, map that filled in USA/Canada sections as we worked them, and charts of qsos by band, mode, operator, etc. It was fun to watch—especially on Sunday. As an example of the difference a bit of luck can make: Anyone remember a fire drill getting the generator going again when it ran out of gas leaving all 4/5/6 stations dead in the water? C’mon, you know it happened. More than once. Well this year the generator got filled periodically, so we never ran out of gas . . . until about 5 minutes past two Sunday afternoon. Some days you win, some days you lose. This year we won. We also learned that the generator can run from 7:00am until 2:05pm on one tank of gas. While we didn’t have to work around thunderstorms as we often have in the past, it certainly was toasty Friday through Sunday. Ceiling fans, box fans, and the pool were put to good use cooling us down. Things were going a bit slow on Saturday as we (really Eddie) worked out a fist full of quirks with stations that didn’t want to behave. So by 10pm when things wound down for the night we only had about 300 qsos. Another 100 or so, mostly CW, were logged waiting for the satellite pass, so at 0200 there were 415 or so contacts. We all got some sleep and didn’t really re-engage until after breakfast, around 0900. Once we got fired up Sunday, we were rocking and rolling, averaging better than 100 qsos an hour for the last 5 hours. Much mo betta. We made just under 1000 qsos on the main N4N stations, plus 24 GOTA contacts from 7 or 8 visitors, and a half dozen satellite contacts. Qso points should be around 3275 (compared to 2875 or so last year). Pursuit of bonus points went remarkably well this year. We got 400 points for operating on emergency power, 100 points for alternate power qsos, 100 points for copying the ARRL bulletin (got it on CW, digital, and RTTY), 100 points for having a safety officer and completing the safety checklist, and 100 points for Eddie’s posts regarding N4N to Facebook. Using Winlink Express and VARA the message traffic was successfully sent via RF, including one message to the SM, for another 200 points. Gary served as GOTA coach for more than 10 GOTA contacts for another 100 points. We also successfully made 8 satellite contacts, for qso points plus a 100 point bonus. We’ll get another 50 points for electronic log submission, for a total of 1250 bonus points (compared to 750 last year). So . . . total score should be around 4500, compared to 3600 last year. All preliminary, of course, but not too shabby! And Jimmy!!! Guess who was the top CW op, again!! ? More to follow, but for now I’m hitting the sack. Getting up early tomorrow to get the wire antennas down and coax put away. Dave UW

Later on this afternoon I will try and locate some functioning Packet stations, which I think is the mode your TS-2000 is hard wired for. (I’m tied up until this afternoon.) I will need to check my log to dig up Digipeater info, but off the top of my head, the one I have used is in Gwinnett County. I’m not aware of a listing. My station consists of VaraFM software, or Packet software, decoded by an outboard sound card connected to and from my 2 M FM rig. On HF, it is VaraHF software working through the built-in sound card on my K3. There is other functional HF software, however this too is seldom used. Vara is available in a free version that works just fine, or a purchased version that provides significant speed and functional improvements. Field Day 16
Field Day is just around the corner! Hopefully those interested have the info you need, but just in case: · Weather for the weekend is supposed to be sunny and hot. Good if we can avoid thunderstorms, but awfully hot with highs in the mid-90s. There are ceiling fans on the deck, but if anybody has a box fan or two it might help keep the deck a bit more comfy. I have sun screen, and will have some bottled water. · When you arrive, park at the top of the driveway too unload. You can leave the cars in the driveway, at least until it fills up. Just don’t block in Margaret’s white Subaru. Should be able to get 4 cars up the driveway. Also, if you park on the street, avoid parking close to our driveway where it makes it difficult for the neighbors across the street to get in and out of their driveway. · Friday all day and into the evening we’ll be setting up. Come when you can, if you can. While it isn’t the 9-towers-in-a-pasture like years ago, it does always seem to fill up the day. Friday is the day to get the tables, chairs, generator, solar panels, extension cords, etc put in place. I’ll be working on getting the wire antennas up starting in the morning around 9am. Friday and Saturday are both supposed to be scorchers—highs mid 90s. So hopefully this job will be done by noon. Eddie is coming in the afternoon and we can hopefully switch gears to getting the radios set up and tested, and ready to copy the ARRL bulletin. The plan is to copy the ARRL CW bulletin at 8:00pm, digital bulletin at 9:00pm. We’ll probably order pizza or something like that Friday evening. · We’ll resume setup Saturday morning—Jeff and Larry will arrive then and get their radios set up and ready, and we can get any last minute things done before it gets too hot. · The operating period is 2pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday. We’ll operate 4A. So there should be a radio available for someone to operate about any time you might want to. We won’t have all the stations on all the time, but hopefully there will be many hours during the day when we do. I plan to be operating until about 1:30am, break for the satellite pass, then get some sleep. It’s sort of up to you when you want to operate, but when you do, there should be a radio available. · Here’s the plan for meals: o I’ll have lunch ready around noon Saturday so we should be ready to go for the 2pm start. I’m planning lunch for AE4TQ, KE4QFB, KE4UW, N1KDO, and WB4SQ. If anyone else plans to be there for lunch, let me know by tomorrow. (I’m doing the grocery shopping Thursday) o Saturday dinner will be kung pao chicken stir fry with rice and vegetables. I’m expecting the same folks for dinner. Again, others are welcome to join us for dinner, but I need to know by tomorrow. o Sunday breakfast will be around 8:30am, plus or minus. The best satellite pass is 0130 Saturday night, and I’ll be up for that. Afterwards I need to get 4 hours sleep, then I’ll get up and start cooking. Menu is pancakes, biscuits, bacon, and sausage. I’m expecting the same group plus KB4SLV. o Sunday lunch will be around 2pm when operating stops. Probably burgers and brats. Same group as for lunch, plus Gary’s xyl. o Please let me know if anyone else plans to eat. · Bring your swim suit and towel. It will be nice to cool off in the pool from time to time. · I have space in the basement if anyone wants to spend the night Saturday night (carpeted, air conditioned). First come first serve for the sofa in the basement. I’d suggest you bring an air mattress. Please let me know if you plan to spend the night so I can get things ready. · Bonus points: o Emergency power (400 points): for running stations off the grid o 5 qsos on alternate power (100 pts): Eddie and I will have stations with access to solar power/solar charged batteries o Message to SM (100 points): I have messages ready to go, and have tested Winlink and VARA HF software o Message traffic (100 points): I have 10 messages ready to go. o Satellite contact (100 points): With Eddie’s help, I should have this one. o Copying ARRL bulletin (100 points): Eddie has the software ready for

Friday Setup 2
I managed to find in the shed the wire antennas we’ll use for field day. I also gave the generator a test run and all seems fine. I’ve filled the tank, then filled my 5 gallon gas can, so we should be good for the weekend. I’ve got most of the radio gear carried upstairs to the dining room to cut down on the trips up and down the stairs for this old man. Tomorrow I plan to bring some tables around to the deck and figure out how to arrange the furniture on the deck to fit it all in. The rules allow setup to begin on antennas (and radios) at 0000Z on Friday, or 8:00pm EST. So I’ll probably shoot a couple of lines over the trees to be ready for antenna raising on Friday. I believe the Jeff and Larry will not arrive here until Saturday morning. I think Eddie is coming Friday afternoon. I’m not sure what Gary’s plans are. John will be at a funeral on Saturday and won’t join us until Sunday. Still need someone(s) to post stuff (or whatever that is called) on social media. Still looking for a safety officer. Haven’t heard that anyone is planning to spend the night Saturday night. Haven’t heard from anyone else planning to attend—it’s not to late, but if you want in on the meals I need to know today. (I’ll check my email before I head to the grocery store tomorrow. Dave Moss

Productive day 4
Had a reasonably productive day with FD setup of computers and radio interfaces. All working fine . . . except, of course, MY computer. Still some glitches with keying and audio with FT8. I’m sure it will get sorted before FD starts. Big thanks to Eddie for bringing his cheat sheet of all the setup lessons learned. Jeff1 brought his analyzer to help me test the LEO pack satellite antennas for 2m and 440. All seems to working well there. I guess I can actually get something working right as long as it has no microprocessor. Looks like Larry and Jeff have to work all day Friday, and Eddie for half the day. So we might not get as much done Friday as would be desired. But I’ll do what I can to get the wire antennas up Friday morning, and when Eddie arrives hopefully we’ll get enough radios up and running before the ARRL bulletins start (I think the first is CW at 8:00pm. I’ll be working with Eric and Joe tomorrow to try and figure something out for message traffic handling. Still a bit of a work in progress for me. For FD weekend I anticipate 6 folks for lunch and dinner Saturday, and breakfast and lunch Sunday: Eddie, Jeff, John P, Larry, Gary, and me. If anybody else plans to come, let me know before Wednesday. I’ll be getting the groceries Thursday morning. This time next week we will have hundreds of N4N QSOs in the log!! Dave UW

FD Prep Day 3
Gents, Would like to get together on Saturday, June 15 (the weekend before FD) to get the laptops we’ll use for FD set up with the latest versions of N1MM and WSJT-X and set up and test rig interface, networking, Seems like every year there are a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out, and it’s best to figure it out early enough that we can get anything else we may need before FD weekend. How about 1:30 or so (and maybe a lunch gathering before). Eddie and I can make it. How about Jeff? Larry? Others are welcome as well if you want to test drive the software. Generally it takes an hour or two, except for those wrinkles. ? The pool will be warm and the beer cold, so hang out a bit if you’d like. Also, mark your calendar for FD setup on Friday, June 21. I’ll take care of getting the wire antennas up, and other folks can get all the radios and computers playing together nicely. If we start around 9:30 we can take a break around 1:00 for some lunch, and should have everything done by supper time. Depending on how we feel, we can order some carry out for dinner, or go grab a bit somewhere. Ultimate goal is to have everything working and ready to copy ARRL CW and digital bulletins Friday evening. Dave UW

Thanks! 3
Big thanks to Eddie for helping me get the IC9700 up and running on satellite! The radio plays nicely now with SAT32PC software. Rotor control works for azimuth, but I believe there is a hardware issue somewhere with the elevation rotor control. So a bit more work to do to resolve that, but I’m at least functional now on the new radio. Eddie, you saved me many hours by letting me copy the settings on your 9700. Thanks also for letting me copy all your repeater settings for local repeaters. Again, a real time saver. I’m a bit reluctant to volunteer Eddie’s time, but if anyone else is having trouble with software/radio/rotor setting for working satellites, Eddie is your man. Dave UW

FW: ARRL Member Bulletin for June 6, 2024
ARRL Member Bulletin for June 6, 2024 Another update on the ARRL cyber attack. Some of you have been asking where the info comes from that it was ransomware, or that a ransom was paid. I’m the one who shared that with Jeff 1, because that is what I heard in the ARRL forum at the Atlanta Hamfest. Bicycle John KB4SLV and I were at the forum, Mickey Baker shared info on a number of recent happenings at ARRL. Among other things, he shared that he was particularly opposed to taking the printed magazine away from those like me who had 2 plus years left on a three year renewal. He then discussed the cyber attach, said it was a ransomware attack, and said the ransom was paid. I looked at John and said “did he just say they PAID the ransom?” John said that’s what he heard. Mickey went on to say that maybe there was some kharma involved, since coincidentally the amount of the ransom was about what it would have cost to have mailed those QSTs. That’s about all the detail I heard. I’m a bit puzzled why ARRL isn’t saying the same thing in communications to members if Board members are sharing that at hamfest forums. Maybe one hand doesn’t know what the other is doing. I also can’t shake the sense that ARRL isn’t being completely forthright about all this. That’s just my opinion, I may be wrong. Outside the forum I asked Mickey when he thought LOTW might be back on line. He guestimated it would be another month (from then, not from the onset in May). So maybe late June or early July. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that”. Dave UW From: ARRL <memberlist@...> Sent: Thursday, June 6, 2024 8:21 PM To: davemoss@... Subject: ARRL Member Bulletin for June 6, 2024 June 6, 2024 MEMBER BULLETIN June 6, 2024 Dear ARRL member, We are writing to inform you of a serious incident that has impacted ARRL’s operations. On or around May 12, 2024, ARRL was the victim of a sophisticated network attack by a malicious international cyber group. We immediately involved the FBI and engaged with third party experts to investigate. On May 16, on the eve of the ARRL National Convention in Ohio, we posted a notice on our website to inform members about the incident. Since then, we have made substantial progress to mitigate the impact of this attack on our organization. We have been posting regular updates, including the status of restored services. Please refer to our dedicated news post at https://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-systems-service-disruption. We are aware that certain members believe we should be openly communicating everything associated with this incident. We are working with industry experts, including cyber crime attorneys and the authorities, who have directed us to be conservative and cautious with our communications while restoring the ARRL network. Many of our services and programs have been impacted by this attack. We have been diligently assessing each system to ascertain the extent of compromise. For example, while the Logbook of The World? server and related user data were unaffected, we have taken the precautionary measure of keeping the service offline until we can ensure the security and integrity of our networks. Similarly, access to Online DXCC is unavailable, although individual award data remains secure. Fortunately, some of our key systems, such as the ARRL website and our association membership system, were unaffected. Despite the severity of the attack, no personal information was compromised. Additionally, ARRL does not store credit card information anywhere on our systems, and we do not collect social security numbers. Our Directors have heard from some members who are concerned about managing their membership renewals. Members can renew online at www.arrl.org/join or by phoning ARRL. We understand the frustration and inconvenience this incident has caused, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as our dedicated staff and partners continue to work tirelessly to restore affected systems and services. arrl paying ransom for data 5
Dave, I'm still blown away from your report from the ARRL Forum at the hamfest. https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes/ransomware "The FBI does not support paying a ransom in response to a ransomware attack. Paying a ransom doesn’t guarantee you or your organization will get any data back. It also encourages perpetrators to target more victims and offers an incentive for others to get involved in this type of illegal activity. " Unbelievable. Meanwhile. Make backups of your own stuff. Field Day 2024 18
Let me ping the group one more time to see who is interested in participating in FD 2024. FD is 3 ? weeks away. So far the only participants I know of for sure are me and AE4TQ Eddie. Between us we have all that is needed to set up two stations, and IC7300 set up for digital modes (courtesy of AE4TQ) and a Kenwood TS-590 set up for either digital modes or CW (courtesy of KE4UW). A couple of others have expressed interest at times, but I haven’t heard anything firm recently. So if you’re interested, let us know. We’ll have single-band wire antennas for 10m-80m, and a 6m yagi if we have critical mass to raise it. We can adjust the number of transmitters based on availability of operators/radios. I think it’s a safe assumption that the food and beer will be outstanding! So who wants to play? Dave UW

Probably Eric too. · 100 points for Educational Activity: Eric will treat us to an educational activity via zoom. · 100 points for GOTA coach: Gary will be the GOTA coach and is bringing one GOTA operator. We may have other GOTA ops. No limit to GOTA QSO’s per operator · 5 points per QSO for GOTA operation, any mode, and no power multiplier: Could be a big deal. Maybe some GOTA digital too? 200 QSOs would add 1000 points. Our total score last year was 3600. · 50 points for Web Score Submission: I’ve got it. · 100 points for Social Media: For promoting N4N Field Day on Facebook, etc. I’m sure you computer savvy folks can do that. · 100 points for Safety Officer: Having a designated Safety Officer using the Safety Check List to keep us all safe. Need a volunteer. So if we do 4A, that’s 1350 points plus whatever we get from GOTA (assuming WINLINK cooperates, otherwise 1150). Menu TBD, but I’ll make arrangements for lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Bring you bathing suit and a towel. We can cool off in the pool from time to time. No glass bottles in the pool, but cans or plastic cups/mugs are OK. If you want to spend Saturday night here FD weekend, that’s fine. In the (air conditioned, carpeted) basement there is sofa and a cot. I also have an air mattress and, if the WX is nice, a hammock. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things, so more to follow. If you have any questions, let me know. Dave UW
