N3FJP Software Active User Group
Hi All, I have set this group up so that all can post for the purpose of discussing the use, features and future enhancements of N3FJP Software. If you ONLY want to be notified of e-mail announcements from me, N3FJP, this is NOT the group you want to subscribe to. I'll post announcements here too, but you will also receive responses and discussion from other group members. The announcements only group will keep e-mail to an absolute minimum. To subscribe to the "Announcements from N3FJP Only" group, please send a blank e-mail to: N3FJP_Software-subscribe@... or visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/N3FJP_Software/ If you wish to participate in discussions with other users of N3FJP software, this is the group to subscribe to. Welcome aboard! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com/ Serving the Amateur Radio Community with contesting and general logging software since 1997

CW Spacing
Hi All, First, I want to thank you all for joining the N3FJP_Software_Users group in addition to the N3FJP_Software ("announcement") group. The other "announcement" group should work well for sending out information, but this group will be especially useful for me to seek ideas and input from you. As expected, this group is much smaller than the "announcement" group, and I think that is good. Of course all are welcome, but I think that a smaller core discussion group will work out well. CW Spacing I have received some requests for additional control over the CW spacing that my programs generate. As you know, right now the only control is speed. I have started with ACLog to add additional spacing control. This enhancement is not yet available for download or added to the contesting programs. Retrofitting over 30 programs is a BIG job, so before I do I would love to get some feedback from you on whether the modification as is goes far enough, or if it needs to be fine tuned even further. Anyone who has ACLog version 2.3 installed, uses the CW feature with ACLog or any of my contesting software and would like to evaluate the modification, please send me an e-mail. The following will happen: - I will e-mail you the .exe file. You will replace the existing file in c:\program files\aclog23 with the file I e-mail. - Give it a whirl. Try adjusting the spacing at different speeds and see what you think. After you have a feel for it then let me know what you think. As always, all your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are very much appreciated. 73, Scott, N3FJP snkdavis@... www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio Community with general logging and contesting software since 1997.

Grid display
2
Maybe a map showing the grids, and maybe use color to show which grids are worked? Kinda like the lastest release of Field Day with the sections map that fill the worked section in with color??? That could be cool . . . Eddie KG4EFR

Getting my CW interface to work
2
I just built the 2N2222 interface circuit and haven't been able to get it to key my rig. Does anyone know what the signal level should be at the db9 output/cw interface input? I can put a positive voltage of 12v on the input and it keys the circuit and the radio fine, so the circuit appears to work fine at that voltage level. and, the software seems to be working fine as I get pulses on the scope when I view the db9 output. I'll appreciate any suggestions. Huel k4drq

Suggestion for ACLog
Hello! I have a suggestion for ACLog 2.3... After spending some time this morning setting up my fields and tabs, it occured to be how much easier it would be if the program (while in design mode) had a "snap to grid" function. Such a function would make custom placement of the fields on the screen a little cleaner. Keep up the good work with your programs, especially ACLog. I always enjoy using it! 73 de Joe, N2NOU

VHF Log and grid squares
5
Hello Scott! I used VHF log over this past weekend in the June contest... it made my life so much easier. One question: Have you ever thought about expanding on the grid square view in the lower right corner? I found that a lot of grids that I had worked didn't show as they were outside the group of grids that show in the existing view. This is just a question... I love the software otherwise! 73 de Tim, N4TSS

CW Interface Working
2
It was the PC. I loaded the program on an old PII 233mhz, W95 system, and it came up working immediately. For those of you who encounter a problem like mine, and who might benefit from some voltage/current data, here is what I measured for my future reference: My TS-850 measures +7.4vdc with the key open. when keyed, the circuit draws 1.5ma from the ts-850. My cw interface requires 4.5vdc to drive the 2n2222 into enough condution to key the ts-850; at that point, the interface circuit draws 0.8ma from the keying source. I performed these tests using a variable DC supply for keying the cw interface. I put a scope on the interface input from the PC, and observed -10vdc unkeyed and +10vdc when keyed by the program on the old PC. Huel k4drq

ACLog Screen Snapshots
Hi All, Eddie, KG4EFR, sent me a very cool ACLog screen shot configuration (see the forwarded message below). I thought it would be fun to add a web page showing different configurations that users have come up with. If you have a layout or color scheme that you really like, please take a screen shot and send it along. Thanks! 73, Scott N3FJP

cw speed indicator for the fd logging program
2
Has anyone done any measurements on the speed vs the number listed in the speed setting window? It would be nice to know what number to set it to for 5,10,15,20,25,30,35 WPM. My ear for guessing speed just isn't that good. Huel k4drq

Ham Call access from Hard Drive
2
Hi Scott, Not wishing to leave my HamCall CD in the drive, I installed the software onto my hard drive, but ACLog doesn't seem to want to extract the log info from that location (C drive/HamCall folder). What file is ACLog looking for on the CD so I can possibly add the correct name to the pathway that I type in? Just set up the DX Spotting feature after getting a broadband connection run to my shack computer. Neato! 73 de WF1L-Bill

Ten Tec Orion Rig Interface
Hi All, Just a quick note to let you know that I have just added code for rig interface with the Ten Tec Orion. It isn’t up on the website yet, but if you are planning to use an Orion for Field Day and wanted to take advantage of the rig interface features I’ll be glad to e-mail you the exe file. Just send me an e-mail and let me know if you need the stand-alone or network version of the exe file. 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com/ Serving the Amateur Radio Community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

Does ACLog have a rotor control feature built in? I just installed the EZ rotor control with the RS232 option in my Tailtwister control box and would like to control the rotor from my logging program. Tnx and 73, Lawrence

Incorrect time stamp on FD Netowork 1.7
3
We used Field Day Network 1.7 for the first time at out FD outing. The program was running on a Dell laptop with XP Pro. All stations connected fine and the program was GREAT! But after the contest I ran the ASCIILOG.TXT and noticed the time stamp was all messed up! The time on the computer was correct, the UTC offset was correct, but the first time stamp was "1980/01/04 06:48:52" which was really 2003/06/28 18:02:12. Then later down the log these two entries were one after the other; 1980/01/04 19:51:01 2003/06/28 18:18:29 Then from that point on it kept (I am assuming) correct time. I never turned the laptop off or rebooted it for the duration of the contest. I did NOT run the program from a DOS prompt or command screen, but installed and ran it straight from the menu in XP Pro. Has anyone else seen this or have an idea? Thanks Mike WE3U we3u@...

FDnet 1.7
2
Our group ran into a simular problem during FD 2002. The five computers were not using a common referance for log timing. When planning started for our FD 2003 event, we knew that having 10 computers would only make the problem worse. http://home.mchsi.com/~kg4efr/fd/2003/photos/ I did some looking on the net and found server/client software that uses a single GPS unit to sync all the computers in a workgroup to the same time (give or take a billionth of a second). The software worked great. ClockWatch Star Sync and the client are shareware, and can be downloaded at http://www.beaglesoft.com/stsyhome.htm Maybe we could talk Scott into a time keeper upgrade to the contest network software??? 73, Eddie KG4EFR

Announcements
Hi All, I have several N3FJP Software Announcements: N3FJP's PA QSO Party Log 1.0 is now available! Like the rest of my contesting software, this program performs all the functions you have come to expect including: - EASY, intuitive and fun to use! - Checks for duplicates (including partials). - Lists all contacts. - Generate CW via your comm port and play wave files for phone automation. - Writes files for log submission. - Writes ADIF Export file format. - Provides DX spotting via Telnet, your TNC or AGW Packet Engine. - Interfaces with most Elecraft, Icom, Kenwood, Ten-Tec and Yaesu radios. - Provides many current statistics and visual displays. Like all my Amateur Radio Software, this program is included with N3FJP's $39 and $49 (with CD) software package registration. If you would like to upgrade to the package, I would be glad to apply the amount that you have already registered as a credit towards that purchase. Please send me an e-mail, and I will let you know your balance. The Amateur Contact Log Call Data has been updated! I have updated the calldata from the FCC and RAC databases as of July 6, 2003. You can download the data from the ACLog page on www.n3fjp.com/ Amateur Exam 1.1 is now available! I have updated the Amateur Exam study program to include a display of the frequency privileges for all classes of license. This program is free to anyone, so please share it with anybody you know who may be interested in our great hobby. Amateur Contact Log Upgrade Underway! When I first wrote ACLog in 1998, 16 Meg of RAM was a lot. For that reason I designed ACLog to access all log data from the hard drive so there would be no limitation to the number of contacts we could log. The sacrifice was a certain amount of speed for searches and queries. With standard RAM in today's PC's being almost 10-fold (or more), I've decided to see what I can do about adding some pep to the database functions. Test logs are okay, but I'd much rather work with real ones during the development of this enhancement. If you have several thousand contacts (or more) in your log, I'd really appreciate it if you would export your log in ACLog format and e-mail it to me for testing. For those of you who still have older PC's as your shack computer (as I do) don't worry. My plan is to provide the option to use either your RAM or hard drive. Field Day Thanks! Thanks so much for all the kind words regarding the Field Day Network and Field Day Contest Log programs. I really appreciate it. Kim and I really enjoyed working so many of you during the contest. It made a great event even more fun. If your group used N3FJP software and have pictures of the 2003 event on the web, please send me a link! As always, thanks so much for all your thoughts, suggestions, kind words and spreading the word about my software. I really appreciate it. 73, Scott, N3FJP snkdavis@... www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio Community with general logging and contesting software since 1997.

ACLog 2.3
2
Hey Scott, Just upgraded to 2.3 and really like the changes/additions. One question however. On the DX Spotting Setup window, can you give us a way to minimize the window. I leave the DX screen up all the time, but on my older W/95 laptop, I have to drag the window to access the desktop. Just a suggestion. Thanks again for your hard work. Ed/kg4qmi
