Worked All States / Counties QSO Party Rules

I'm just curious about why the 12 and 17 meter bands are excluded. I've been getting a number of contacts?
on 17 meters and would like to have those count. If not, then I'll need to step on the other bands.
?
Thanks for the great logging program.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your e-mail.? Guys are understandably very protective of preserving 12 and 17 from the increased activity that contesting brings.? Being a year long event based on normal operating, the WAS / Counties QSO Party would not have had an impact on that, so when we proposed the initial rules years ago, we included 12 and 17.? Still, enough concern was expressed, so we removed those bands.

Thanks for your interest!

Enjoy!

Hey Brian.? Just a wild guess (WAG) but it’s probably because most contests do not include the WARC bands.? I’m probably wrong and I’m sure someone will correct me.

Correct: 30, 17, and 12 are never used for contests.

When WARC bands were introduced, it was decided to exclude them from contesting due to the small bandwidth of each of those bands (12, 17, 30 meters)

More here?

There is a lot of activity by MARAC , the County Hunters, in the WARC bands.?
County Hunting is not contesting. QSO parties are but not hunting.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the background info. Given the limited frequency space of the two bands, I understand why doing something that might overtax them is a concern.

There are plenty of other options, more than enough for me.

Hi Pat,

"Google it" should be the first reply to almost any question, including the person who's going to ask the question of others. From the Wikipedia article on WARC bands:

"...Due to their relatively small bandwidth of 100 kHz or less, there is a gentlemen's agreement that the WARC bands may not be used for general contesting. This agreement has been codified in official recommendations, such as the IARU Region 1 HF Manager's Handbook, which states: "Contest activity shall not take place on the 5, 10, 18, and 24 MHz bands."[3]

Non-contesting radio amateurs are recommended to use the contest-free HF bands (30, 17, and 12m) during the largest international contests.[4]"

So, they have provided an oasis for those of us who aren't into contests or are satisfied with only peripheral participation.
