Learned a Vaulable Lesson!!
Yesterday, my N3FJP Database started giving me some error messages. And that happened after I starting using Onedrive.
What I have learned is backup your Database routinely. I was able to recreate most of my Log, and some of it is now gone.
I don't believe there is a way you can download a file from EQSL or LOTW. If there is a way, that would be great.
But most importantly backup your database weekly if possible. You never know when the ultimate issue may occur.

The lesson is do not use Onedrive. It tends to screw with non-Microsoft software that keeps working files in the default file tree. A good precaution is to keep your log file in a dedicated folder in the root of your local hard drive. ACLog makes backups automatically and you also should put your backup-on-shutdown somewhere that Windoze will not implement its better ideas.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your e-mail.? From AC Log's LoTW form click All Since under Download and enter a date prior to the date of your last good record to restore your log. Interesting. I find One-Drive to be useful.... provided it is used

intelligently. Running 3 computers in conjunction with the ham-shack, one-drive handles a lot of the file sharing and log back-ups pretty painlessly. Perhaps that is the key. Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. El Paso, Texas - DM61rt. SOTA W5T-Texas Association Manager. -----Original Message-----

At the end of a contest, I have a whole bunch of files to delete, but I also don't lose anything. |
I use Onedrive in my day job because it is standard on our corporate PCs and find it more useful than annoying there. The problem that we see as hams is due to the way OD introduces itself and kindly asks to "back up" you files. Now most of is know that back up means copy files to another location, but OD *moves* the files to its folder tree without notice. This puts it in the category of malware to me. I am told that you can adjust the settings so that it leaves copies of the files in their original location but this does not seem to be openly apparent from what I have read. It all seems somewhat shady to me. Having said that, both my hamshack machine and the machine I am typing this on are not OD capable so I have not had to deal with it in a ham context. Moreover, since day 1 I have used a dedicated folder in the root of my boot drive to store my log files and have never lost a log. My backup-on-shutdown goes to Dropbox.

So many users are tricked by M$ into using OD as a "backup" not realizing all their documents (where your ACL is stored), pictures and some other folders are 100% REMOVED from your local computer(s).? Not much of a backup, more like theft.? Think about going out to do a POTA with your laptop and get all set up in the park and find out you don't have your N3 logbook because M$ OD has taken it away from you.?
?
A simple test to see what you actually have lost control over is to DISCONNECT your WiFi or LAN.? Now check for your documents or pictures and guess what, if they are gone, that means they have been "backed up" to OD and removed from your computer for "safe keeping".?? If you really want to backup your files, there are a bunch of free and paid programs that do this great without touching your files, but not M$ Backup in Windows or OneDrive.?
?
Bottom line, make 100% sure you understand that M$ is going to try to sell you more OD space after you fill up what they give you for free, or begin deleting the oldest files to make room for new ones you add, if you don't fall for the up sale.? It's a pain to decouple from OD, but YouTube has so many video's on how to do this and safely restore control of your files to you.?

开云体育The great news is that for those who just can’t stand M$ - there is MAC-OS, Linux, and other stuff.? No one is forced to use M$. ? Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. El Paso, Texas - DM61rt. SOTA W5T-Texas Association Manager.

开云体育NOPE – Scott does windows only.? But plenty of others who swore off M$ have successfully used MAC-OS or Linux, other stuff too I think.? So for the people who can’t get a handle on MS-OD….. there are other options.? ME – I spent a little time learning about One-Drive, and now it isn’t a bother.? I actually find it useful for moving data around between my three SHACK computers. ? Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. El Paso, Texas - DM61rt. SOTA W5T-Texas Association Manager.

Some have got it to work in the most recent versions of WINE under Linux. I had it running but it seemed a bit quirky (not "losing logs" quirky, just UE stuff). I haven't kept it up since my last distro update since I have two different VirtualBox Windows VMs that I can sandbox Windows applications in.

george... if you open file explorer...locate your onedrive folder... right click it...opens a menu....select "always keep copy on this device"... will keep files on YOUR pc and the cloud... if u lose internet...and update a file.... onedrive will compare files and use the latest for both when internet is available. ALL?of my files are on 3 pc's and the cloud... hope this helps.. 73 jim wa4yiz |
One of the first things I do is disable One Drive on any PC I work with.? I have my own secure and fully encrypted backup solution that the provider does not have access to.? N3FJP is not the only program to get "borked" by one drive (technical term), other well known loggers have the same issue and advise against using it.
?
All of my contacts get automatically backed up to QRZ and LotW, so both of those act as offsite storage and can be used to restore my database if needed. |
JIM:?
?
You are correct, OD "can" be used for sharing, and I know many that have done this after they understand what "backup" really does.? But M$ doesn't give you this option up front.? They just ask you to start "backup" and that is the black hole so many have fallen into.? It's ultimately a sales gimmick to make $$$.?

开云体育Ageee, OD is most certainly NOT a safe place for your log. Your log is irreplaceable and the only record of your QSOs. In addition to uploading to Club Log, LoTW and QRZ immediately after a QSO (or at least no less than daily if the bands are
really active) I also have the main log file on my main HD

开云体育Sorry, upload got interrupted- and my log file is also backed up to two places - another HD on my main computer as well as a thumb drive. ?It would be a catastrophic loss to me if my N3FJP log disappeared. My number 1 QSO listed is dated 11/18/1979
and as of today my most recent QSO number is 71,892 .. ?I don’t do eQSL - I tried to at the beginning but wound up getting an incredible?number of bogus requests for confirmations of QSO’s I never had - mostly listed as SSB. I am a CW op. ?
