Configure N3FJP and Yaesu FT-710

My Club had the good fortune to have a brand new FT-710 for Field Day this year. And, thanks to Derek-W6DER, solved and setup the radio to use N3FJP logging software on a PC, utilizing all the keyboard MACROs on CW. I tried the setup at home with other N3FJP suite programs on my PC, Win10, with complete success. So, thought to summarize here.

On the PC Computer:
  • Download the (2) Silicon Labs drivers for the 710 from Yaesu.com
  • Go to the?Device Manager,?Ports (COM and LPT), expand the tree, and note the COM port numbers that were assigned to the Silicon Labs drivers. Write these down.
  • Connect the radio to your computer with a?USB-B?cable
On the FT-710 Radio:
  • Press the Function knob and select?Operation Setting?(soft button) /?General, and note the CAT Rate for CAT-1. Default is 38.4bps. I use 9600bps as another radio requires the slower rate
  • Press?BACK?and select the?CW Setting?/?Mode CW?/ and set the?PC Keying?setting to?DTR
  • Back out of all the menus
On N3FJP:
  • Go to?Settings?/?Rig Interface?drop-down menu and select?Yaesu - Newer 2?from the Select Rig: list
  • Select the "higher" of the two COM ports assigned by the PC in the COM Port list
  • Select?Baud Rate?to match what you have setup in the radio, and?Parity=NONE, Data Bits=8, Stop Bits=2, Connection Power=None, Mode Determined By=Rig
  • Turn the radio ON,?CW Mode, and press the?TEST?button to poll the FT-710. The Frequency and Mode fields should populate and feedback from the radio should appear in the Data Returned field.
  • If the above didn't happen, go back and check your settings. If the software DID connect to the radio, click?SAVE SETTINGS?and change the name to Yaesu-710 (or your choice); click?SAVE
  • Next, go to?Settings?drop-down menu and select?Transmit CW Setup
  • Select the "lower" of the two COM ports in the COM Port list, assigned previously by the PC
  • Select?DTR?in Keying Options
  • Setup the MACROs as you desire, following any need for "special characters".
  • Scott's Description field on the right offers auto-logging with "!" character, auto call grab with the "$" character, sequential QSO numbering, etc.
  • If desired, check the "Show Mini on Startup" box if you would like to have a mini-menu pop-up of the MACROs you setup on the main screen, as a reminder of what F-keys do which MACRO
  • Press the?TEST?button and the F9 MACRO should key the radio and play "VV de (your call)"
  • If everything worked, check the other MACRO's you've setup. Then, click?SAVE Settings?for this radio.
  • Again, you can use any description you want
  • Click?DONE

You can duplicate the N3FJP settings for different N3FJP contest software, then select LOAD SETTINGS, then select the file you created for the selected contest, and you should be good to go. For example, I've created settings for different radios and the different contest software from N3FJP, making it quick to reconfigure each.

Feedback is welcomed, especially if I've missed something.

Hi, there is one slight correction. When you download the Silicon Labs drivers, there will be one port called Enhanced and one called Standard. You must check which is which in Device Manager.

From Yaesu driver instructions:

?Enhanced COM Port: AT Communications (Frequency and Communication Mode Settings) and firmware updating?
?Standard COM Port: TX Controls (PTT control, CW Keying, Digital Mode Operation)

The Enhanced port number is used in the Rig Interface menu screen of N3FJP. The Standard port number is used in CW Setup menu screen. It is not the higher or lower number, but the port type that determines.

Thanks for the info.?

You are correct. Both of mine (Windows10 Pro) show as Enhanced COM Ports in Device Manager ... But, I chose the "higher" COM port number (PTT Control) in N3FJP "RIG INTERFACE", and the "lower" COM port number (Frequency and Mode) in the TRANSMIT menu, and it worked out.

I use the ftdx101d. Perhaps there are some minor differences.?
