Missing QSOs

Fred W3ICM

Hello,

This is W3ICM, Fred, in MD.

I use the ACL, and I see that all of my 2025 QSOs, except for those today, have disappeared.? ?

I don't recall ,,,but there may have been a reminder box message to update which I did, but I would expect that all QSOs would be retained.

Would appreciate? help or advice.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your e-mail.? I'm sorry that you ran into trouble.? The most likely cause is that when your PC did the update, it reverted to a previous restore point prior to 2025.? You can restore from backup or your LoTW uploads as detailed here:

Enjoy!

Thank you, Scott.

I find that all of my QSOs from 2024 and 2025 have disappeared.? ?

That should never have happened because of a software update.? ?I consider it a software flaw.? There should have been a smooth transition to the updated software.

I read the restoration material in the link that you provided.??

What is the easiest approach to restore the maybe 20,000 QSOs from 2024 and 2025?

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your follow up.? I'm sorry that you are still having trouble.? Losing log data on an update is obviously not typical.? Your log data is not touched during an update, so something else is at play.

There isn't anything difficult in any of the recovery methods I referenced in my previous reply, so choose the one easiest for you, provided it has the most current data.??

If your LoTW uploads are current, doing an All Since download from AC Log's LoTW form dated to 1/1/2024 is probably the easiest.? It may take a while to complete depending on the number of records and how busy the LoTW server is, but just let the program run while you are doing something else and it will finish.

Enjoy!

WOW – this is scary Scott and Fred.? But I need to say it, I don’t even know how long I’ve been using AC-Log…… my log goes back to 1990 digitally.? I have paper logs back to the 1970, but I’m not interested in typing it all in.

In all of these years, there was only one time I had a problem with an update.? Do you remember that, Scott?? I was the lone issue getting a major new update to run, I think it was from 3.x to 4.x.? And the issue was with MY COMPUTER, I was missing a FONT that somehow AC-Log didn’t like.? Without your expert help, I would have been using the older version until I bought a new computer.? All over a stupid missing font!

I feel sorry for Fred.? I know first-hand how frustrating it is to have computer issues.? Computers are magical, and I’m not a magician.? But if it was a flaw in your program there would have been several reports of it by now.? Even so, this is why we do a good back up weekly.? Every Sunday morning, upload to LoTW, download the new LoTW users file, download a new Country List, download the LoTW upload for confirmations, transfer LoTW to QRZ, download QRZ, and then MAKE A BACKUP in the computer and to a thumb drive.

Thank you Mike.

I upload daily to ClubLog and LoTW, sometimes several times during the day, depending on the number of QSOs,?and when I work a DXpedition where I want to see an immediate?match on ClubLog, e.g., VU4AX.

But ACL is my QSO record. ?I am into the DX Marathon Challenge, an annual competition so I need accurate data.?The ACL Awards feature provides?the annual data on the number of countries and zones in each band. Very helpful. ?But it’s useless if many QSOs are missing.

The DX Marathon Challenge (this is not the ARRL Challenge)?requires that I upload my 2025 QSOs to their website at the end of the year. ?Thus it’s critical that I have all of my 2025?data.

The ACL record also helps me to avoid duplicating past QSOs.

I didn’t know that I had missing QSO data until I was going to QSO CP6UA on 40 meters. I wanted to check past QSOs because I didn’t want to waste my time with another QSO. ?So I entered the call into the call slot that results in a record of the past QSOs. ?I knew that I had a
?QSO with him on 10 meters earlier this year. The 10 meter QSO did not show up, leading me to investigate further, discovering that all of my?2025 QSOs disappeared. ?AND manyM?QSOs from 2024 are gone.?

QSOs should NEVER disappear from a software update.

Agreed.? But my point is that if it were a flaw in Scott’s program, there would be several reports or more by now.? What we are seeing here is a single instance of a problem.? Simple logic says this is not an N3FJP program problem, it is a Fred’s computer alone problem.

It doesn’t help you fix the problem.? But at least it will keep you from wrongly fixing the blame.? Or are you insisting that Scott’s program did this to your computer alone out of the thousands using AC-Log?

To err is human.? To really foul it up takes a computer.

Fred,

I agree in principle. But this is Windows. I am an award chaser and have over 26,000 QSLs in ACL dating back to 1999. I have used ACL from the very early days to the the current version and have never lost any records to my knowledge. I think the first thing I would do is go into File > Show File Locations and see if the path to your log file has changed. Newer versions of Windows can do strange things (I'm looking at YOU, Onedrive). You could also have Windows to a brute force search for *.mdb files on your hard drive. It may also turn up data files from other programs but it should be obvious which ones are your log. The largest file with the most recent date should be the one you are looking for.

Fred:
?
Jim is correct.?? Go into the top banner menu of ACLog, and choose FILE -> SHOW FILE LOCATIONS.?? This will open a dialog box showing the location of logs and file, and also the path to the current log that is being used (which may not be the one you desire).? Notice that there is a backup directory there, with multiple copies of your log file.? On most windows systems, all of this will be under path? C:\Users\<your name>\Documents\Affirmatech\N3FJP Software\???????? unless you, or something else, moved it.
?
Another point for possible debug:??? Did the Windows update turn on OneDrive?? Or did it get enabled recently???? A year ago on my computer, one drive turned on and suddenly
all the files in my DOCUMENTS folder were vanishing and getting moved to the OneDrive cloud online.?? It took a little work to reverse this, restore my files, turn off and remove
OneDrive, and curse at MickeySoft for the 449723065843th? time!??

And, as Scott already pointed out, even if you do not perform backups on your computer, and even if the above steps do not find where your actual log file is, you can simply download from LOTW to restore those QSOs.
?
I can assure you that this is not a flaw in ACLog;? Something or someone has changes where your main log file is at, or else someone accidentally messed with menu FILE -> NEW or else FILE -> OPEN, but that is less likely.? Either way, checking the FILE -> SHOW FILE LOCATIONS,?? then checking the contents of C:\Users\<your name>\Documents\Affirmatech\N3FJP Software\ ? (or whatever show file locations says), and then checking if OneDrive emptied your Documents folder are some of the first simple diagnostic steps.
?
Let us know what you find.
?

Can’t you download them from LoTW.? That’s what I did WHEN I lost mine (No fault of the N3FJP software).? Worked GREAT!? I am, however, assuming it is ACLog you are talking about.

I must add something here.

ONE-DRIVE does not turn itself on.? It just doesn’t.? Sometimes on a Windows Update, you will be asked a series of questions.? READ THEM CAREFULLY!? One of them regards a BACKUP, and when you select YES, this is when One-Drive takes over.

One Drive does not just come alive on it’s own one day – that Terminator stuff is only in the movies.? SO FAR.

Fred:

Thank you Scott.

I reviewed the methods presented in the link, and I asked what is the easiest method?

I see that I have backups for each week...BUT I am missing all of 2025, and much of 2024.? ?Entering the data from each week would be very time consuming, so I was looking for an easy method.

I have also contacted ClubLog to see if I can download the QSOs that I uploaded.? ? If possible, I will download, and then upload to ACL.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your follow up.? We don't have a Club Log download function that merges data, so please use the LoTW option I recommended yesterday, when I answered your question.? ??

You wrote:

I suggested the easiest method in my reply yesterday.? ?/g/N3FJPSoftwareUsers/message/64089

Again, to reiterate, I suggest that you try the All Since download from AC Log's LoTW form, back dated to 1/1/2024.? Please read yesterday's reply in full before you proceed.

Also, be aware that if you go the weekly backup route, each backup contains your entire log, up to the date of that week.? You only have to carefully follow the backup restoration steps once, should you choose that option, instead of the recommended LoTW option.

Enjoy!

This sounds like you were using ONEDRIVE and it's no longer connected or using a different logon, that could be the problem.? ACL uses the default Documents folder, which in today's controlling Windows environment is not a great idea for most.? So that's why you only have today's QSO's that are located on your computer and not OneDrive.? I've helped many hams disconnect from OneDrive to get control back to their documents (logs) and such when working POTA.??
?
OneDrive is a disaster if you don't fully understand how it works and that is seamlessly "steals" your precious files right out from under you nose.? Then when you go set up a POTA, nothing is there since you are no longer connected to OneDrive.??
?
Microsoft is constantly "encouraging" you to use OneDrive as a backup without fully understand the implications of activating it by using the default settings.?
?
I don't use OneDrive and never will, so my N3FJP logs are safe as well as backed up every night to a separate drive.?

Did you do a Search of your hard drive for *.mdb files as I suggested? What did you find?

I also joined the group that lost all of my log data.? I did nothing except allow windoze to update my PC.
?
What I did do and not read carefully as noted above on this thread, is when windoze started up the next time, it asked me to do a backup with One Drive.? Since I thought I was using One Drive ONLY for backup I allowed it to do that.
?
BIG MISTAKE.? It backed everything up and removed the local documents under my user name.?
?
When I started AClog I received the error message that the files were no longer in the path and could not be loaded.? All my logs were GONE.
?
This had nothing to do with AClog.? It was all on my allowing One Drive to do a back up.
?
But thankfully Google had many others with this problem.? I did the following and all have returned all programs work and my log it intact!!
?

OneDrive supports backup "Desktop", "Documents" or "Pictures" folders and?move?these folder locations from your local PC to?OneDrive syncing folder.

To get them back, please click OneDrive icon from taskbar notification area >> settings icon >> settings >> Under "Sync and backup", click "manage backup">> uncheck "Documents" folder and save it. (as?shown?in?screenshots?below)

This action should create a new local "Document" folder and stop syncing it with OneDrive. However, for the previous files, it will not be moved back automatically. You need to manually copy it back:

Go to File explorer >> "OneDrive" folder >> Find "Documents" folder under "OneDrive folder >> copy all contents from inside and paste it to your local PC "Documents" folder.

?

?

?

The AClog is a wonderful program and I am glad I can use it.? ?I hope this might help with your lost logs.
