Quick Digital Tutorial for CQ WW RTTY This Weekend - Fldigi, PSK Express & N7YG Digital Engine
Hi All, I've been receiving lots of requests for quick, step by step instructions for interfacing Fldigi, PSK Express and N7YG Digital Engine with my CQ WW RTTY software for this weekend's DX contest. The following is written with CQ WW RTTY in mind, but most applies to Amateur Contact Log 5.7 too. First, a couple caveats. I've been around the block in SSB and CW contests, but operating digital is brand new to me. I am only now becoming familiar with these digital programs myself. Both Dave and Jeff have active support groups for their applications, where they and other much more seasoned users can help you. I'm not equipped to support Dave and Jeff's software. If you have questions about using these programs, need additional support, have bug reports, want to receive future announcements or would like to offer suggestions for future enhancements, please join and post to their users groups: Fldigi by Dave, W1HKJ: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/linuxham/info PSK Express & Digital Engine by Jeff, N7YG: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info Also, Jeff, N7YG has just updated PSK Express (2.1.9.8) to correct the state / province transfer and Digital Engine (5.2.2.7) so that the waterfall properly shows frequency. If you are planning to use Jeff's software this weekend, please be sure you are running either of these latest versions. Updating PSK Express is super easy. Just click Help > Check for Update and follow the prompts. For the Digital Engine, uninstall your current version from Windows Control Panel and then install the new version. What follows are just the details on interfacing these digital programs with my software. If you need help using, programming macros, setting sound card levels and other functionality of the respective programs, please post to the appropriate users group above. Hopefully the following will be enough to get you started interfacing these programs with my CQ WW RTTY software (and AC Log): Configuring my CQ WW DX RTTY 1.4 Software: http://www.n3fjp.com/cqww.html (use the same password as the CQ WW SSB / CW program) Regardless of which digital program you plan to use, the first step will always be to start my software before starting the connecting program. From CQ WW RTTY 1.4's menu options click Settings > Application Program Interface and check the upper check box that says TCP API Enabled (Server). Leave the lower check box unchecked. That is the only step required in N3FJP Software. Everything else is handled by the connecting program. Digital Engine by Jeff, N7YG: Download Link: http://n7yg.net/software/n7yg-digital-engine User's Guide: http://n7yg.net/pskexpress/N7YG%20Digital%20Engine%20Users%20Guide.pdf Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info Comments: Probably the easiest of the three to configure, this program was specifically designed by N7YG to function as a companion to the suite of N3FJP software and provides a simple digital modem with a floating waterfall that can reside on the same screen as the logging software. The Digital Engine detects which N3FJP program it is connected to and configures automatically. Note that the waterfall is a little tricky to move. Sometimes it continues to follow your mouse after you stop dragging. Just click again to disconnect. Setup: - From the menu options click Logger Selection and select N3FJP. The name of the N3FJP Software program you are connected to will appear in the title bar and frequency will appear below with rig interface enabled. - Configure macros, or press F4 to transmit and F5 to receive. - For CQ WW RTTY, Select RTTY from the waterfall - Can be customized to fit on one screen - To send a value to N3FJP Software, Left click the text in the decode window and select the field - Click Log contact to log. - Typical logging sequence for CQ WW RTTY: A. Left click on a Call in the decode window and click send to call sign. Default CQ zone and RST values appear immediately in CQ WW RTTY. B. If working a US or Canada station, left click on the State / Province and click send to State / Province. C. Click Log Contact Fldigi by Dave, W1KHJ: Download Link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/fldigi/ User's Guide: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/fldigi/fldigi-help.pdf/download (Interfacing with N3FJP Software begins on page 135). Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/linuxham/info Comments: Fldigi is excellent, widely used digital software that supports many digital modes. Note that as a contest interface, Fldigi currently requires you to capture the CQ Zone, while N7YG's programs will accept the default that N3FJP Software fills when the call is sent, so there is an additional user action required when using Fldigi for CQ WW RTTY. Dave and I are considering possible ways to streamline that now. Also note that while both the N7YG applications send each field value to N3FJP as you select them from the decode window, Fldigi only sends the call in advance, so don't expect to immediately see the other exchange values in CQ WW RTTY. When you click Fldigi's Save button, the rest of the fields in CQ WW RTTY will fill and save. Setup (these are the very basics. Dave has LOTS more documentation in his Users's Guide): - Click Configure > N3FJP Logs - Unless you are connecting to a different PC, just leave the defaults and click Connect. - Click Configure > Contest and select CQ WW RTTY - Click Configure > UI > Log > QSO and enable the RST defaults. That way you won't have to take the time to capture the RST values during the QSO. - Click Op Mode > RTTY to set up for CQ WW RTTY - Configure macros. - To send a value from Fldigi to CQ WW, Right click the value in the decode window and then select the field. Only the Call field is sent immediately. The rest are held in Fldigi's queue and displayed in Fldigi until save is clicked. - Clicking the Save button (button with blue down arrow) will write the values to N3FJP and save the contact. - Typical logging sequence for CQ WW RTTY: A. Right click on a Call in the decode window and click call. Default CQ zone appears in CQ WW, but still must be captured manually in Fldigi. B. Right click on the CQ zone and click CQ Zone. C. If working a US or Canada station, Right click on the State / Province and click CQ State. D. Click button with the blue down arrow to log the contact E. Then click the yellow brush in Fldigi to clear the existing values in the Fldigi software. PSK Express by Jeff, N7YG: Download Link: http://n7yg.net/software/psk-express Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info Comments: A full featured digital program that supports a variety of digital modes including RTTY. Like the Digital Engine, PSK Express detects which N3FJP program it is connected to and configures automatically. Also note that while Digital Engine uses Left clicks, PSK Express uses Right clicks. Note that with regards to interfacing with my software, PSK Express and Digital Engine function very similarly, but PSK Express can't be sized down like the Digital Engine. If you only have one monitor, the Digital Engine may be the better choice. Setup: - From the menu options click N3FJP > Setup > Enable Interface. If successful, the name of the program and current frequency will display on the main form. - Configure macros, or press F4 to transmit and F5 to receive. - For CQ WW RTTY, Select RTTY from the Mode drop down (under the Windows menu option near the top) - To send a value to N3FJP Software, Right click the text in the decode window and select the field - Click Log contact to log. - Typical logging sequence for CQ WW RTTY: A. Right click on a Call in the decode window and click send to call sign. Default CQ zone and RST values appear immediately in CQ WW RTTY. B. If working a US or Canada station, right click on the State / Province and click send to State / Province. C. Click Log Contact Conclusion As you can see, even covering just the most basic functions in the briefest way possible covers a lot of ground, so I really encourage you to read Dave and Jeff's documentation, join their e-mail groups and seek support there as needed. Dave, Jeff and I have been working really hard the last few months on the interface features of our respective programs. There is a lot going on under the hood, so please view this CQ WW RTTY contest as a first, initial test. We all realize that there are likely lots of opportunities for improvement that will come to light in the contest environment this weekend. We welcome your feedback and suggestions on Jeff and Dave's e-mail groups after the contest! Enjoy CQ WW RTTY DX this weekend! We hope to work you! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997. 1 Peter 3 vs 15: Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. Amateur Contact Log 5.7, CQ WW RTTY 1.4, Interface w Fldigi, N7YG & H.R. 1301!
Hi All, Just in time for CQ WW DX RTTY this coming weekend.... Amateur Contact Log 5.7 and CQ WW RTTY 1.4 are now available! Dave, W1HKJ (author of Fldigi), Jeff, N7YG (author of PSK Express and Digital Engine) and I have been working really hard the past few months on the Application Program Interface (API) to N3FJP Software for their digital programs. To accommodate all the new features of their respective programs, I've added additional API commands to my software. To set up my software to interface with these digital programs, start N3FJP Software first. From the menu options, click Settings > Application Program Interface and check the upper check box that says TCP API Enabled (Server). Leave the lower check box unchecked. Then start the digital program of your choice and refer to their help as needed (Configure > N3FJP Logs in Fldigi and N3FJP in PSK Express). In addition to the new API commands (0.8), I've added a few other enhancements, including: - Ability to quickly and easily switch between two rigs as configured on the rig interface form (Just press Ctrl X from the main form to switch between rigs). - To clear the band map, click on the band map and then press Shift C (this only affects the band map, not the DX Spots list). - Ability to add an offset on frequency change such as clicking on a DX spot, as configured on the rig interface form. When you click on a DX spot in CW, you may wish to be up or down a few Hz, so you aren't calling on the exact same frequency as everyone else. In digital, you may wish to specify the sweet spot of your waterfall pass band. - To quickly display the frequency column in the QSO list in any contesting program, click Ctrl + Shift + F. As always, these upgrades are free to registered users. Just uninstall the previous versions from Windows Control Panel and then install these: Amateur Contact Log 5.7: Download Page: http://www.n3fjp.com/aclog.html Detailed upgrade steps: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html CQ WW DX RTTY 1.4: Download Page: http://www.n3fjp.com/cqww.html Detailed upgrade steps: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepscontest.html More Contest Program Upgrades Coming Soon! By far, the main emphasis of this AC Log and CQ WW RTTY upgrade is the digital interface integration. With these two now complete, Lord willing, I will begin updating the rest of the 100+programs with these latest enhancements after we receive feedback on how CQ WW RTTY goes this weekend. Dave, Jeff and I will do our best to stay ahead of this coming season's digital contest schedule. The Latest Digital Programs that Interface with N3FJP! Dave, W1HKJ has just released his latest version of Fldigi, which interfaces with my software! Fldigi is a widely used, free digital program, supporting a variety of digital modes. You must upgrade to Fldigi 3.23.14 to interface Fldigi with my software: Fldigi 3.23.14: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/fldigi/ Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Fldigi-N3FJP/info And you will find the latest versions of Jeff, N7YG's free programs here. PSK Express is a full featured digital program that supports a variety of digital modes including RTTY, etc. N7YG Digital Engine is a scaled down version of PSK Express, specifically designed by N7YG to function as a companion to the suite of N3FJP software and provide users with a simple digital modem and floating waterfall, that can reside on the same screen as the logging software: PSK Express 2.1.9.6: http://www.n7yg.net/software/psk-express Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info N7YG Digital Engine 5.2.2.6: http://www.n7yg.net/software/n7yg-digital-engine Support: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info Even if you are more familiar with one program than another, please try all the digital options! There are some differences that may make one more appealing to you. You may find one works better for contesting and the other for general rag chew. Dave and Jeff have both been working really hard to make this happen, so please be sure to thank them both! Other Programs Now Interfacing with N3FJP Software In addition to Dave and Jeff's latest work, here are other programs that now interface with N3FJP Software: JT Alert: http://hamapps.com/ (Digital bridge software emphasizing JT modes) W4ELP Lookup Utility: http://n8sdr.com/index.php/w4elp-lookup-utility (Interfaces my software with DM 780 - including the free version) Win4K3Suite: http://va2fsq.com/ (Rig Interface for Elecraft radios) If you would like to see other digital programs interface with my software, you can help make that happen! Developers often add upgrades based on feature requests from their users and it may be your prompting that makes the difference! Please refer the developer here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html Please take two minutes, RIGHT NOW and add your voice to our call for the US Senate to pass the Amateur Radio Parity Act! Now that H.R. 1301 has unanimously passed in the US House, it is on to the US Senate. Adding your voice to our call for Senate passage literally takes less than two minutes, costs you nothing and may just be one of the most important things you'll ever do for Amateur Radio's future. Please Help Test Fldigi - N3FJP Contesting Implementation!
Hi All, The testers, Dave, W1HKJ (author of Fldigi) and I are working through the Fldigi - N3FJP Software interface testing process now. Most of the input Dave and I have received so far has been AC Log related. Operating quickly, smoothly and efficiently in contests has its own set of feature requirements. I've been around the block with CW and SSB contests, but I've not ever seriously operated any digital contests. If you are a seasoned digital contester, we really need your input, not only on whether the interface is working correctly now with the contest software, but what needs serious digital contesters have, that may not be fully addressed in the current implementation. Please help us make the Fldigi - N3FJP Software contest implementation the best it can be! In addition to AC Log, I have a beta version of the Field Day software that will interface with Fldigi ready for testing! If you are a seasoned digital contester who is already familiar with Fldigi and N3FJP software, please join us here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Fldigi-N3FJP/info You'll find the download links for the current versions of the test software here (Fldigi, AC Log and Field Day Contest Log): https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Fldigi-N3FJP/links/all If you would like to see the software work a certain way, now is the perfect time for your input on the Fldigi - N3FJP group! PA QSO Party 3.9, Fldigi Update & Club Contesting QST Article!
Hi All, I have three quick announcement to share: Pennsylvania In State QSO Party 3.9 is Now Available! The PA QSO party folks have redefined the Canadian section multipliers to mirror ARRL Field Day. I've updated the in state version of the PA QSO party software accordingly. No changes were required for the out of state version. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. You'll find the latest PA QSO Party software here: http://www.n3fjp.com/stateqsoparty.html If you are upgrading from a previous version, please be sure to follow these upgrade steps: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepscontest.html Fldigi to N3FJP Software Interface is Nearing Completion! Just last evening, Dave, W1HKJ, author of Fldigi, wrote me with an update on his progress interfacing his digital software with N3FJP Software. Dave writes "the work is in progress and nearing completion"! There is still some coding to be done and then a round of testing before general release, but Dave is working really hard and there should be more developments soon. In the mean time, if you aren't familiar with Fldigi, you can download the current version (that does not yet interface with my software) from Dave's web site here: http://www.w1hkj.com/ Kickstart Your Group with Club Contesting Article Published in August QST! Contesting together as a club has really reinvigorated our local group! After our club's contest coordinator responsibilities fell to me, I wasn't sure what those responsibilities entailed, so I wrote my friends at ARRL and asked if they ever published an article on the topic. They said they hadn't, but saw the need for one. They encouraged me to do some digging on my own and write something up. The result is on page 61 of the August 2016 QST! You'll find the article in the online version of QST here: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/arrl/qst_201608/index.php#/62 You'll also find the article on my web site here (posted with permission): http://www.n3fjp.com/help/clubcontesting.html The article covers how your local group can organize and participate in club contests, how club contesting can really build enthusiasm and fun and how to use my club score processing software, so that your group can track your cumulative progress in real time! Please Help Beta Test PSK Express Interface with N3FJP Software!
Hi All, I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer! It may be hot now, but fall contest season is right around the corner! I'm very excited to let you know that Jeff, N7YG and author of PSK Express, which supports PSK, RTTY and other digital modes, is working on interfacing directly with Amateur Contact Log and all my contesting programs that support a digital mode (ARRL RTTY, Field Day, CQ WW, CQ WPX, NAQP, etc.)! PSK Express has been around a while, but the interface to my software is new and is still in beta testing. We would really appreciate your help fleshing out the remaining interface bugs. If you would like to help, you can download PSK Express (free) from Jeff's web site here: http://n7yg.net/software/psk-express If you are new to PSK Express, click on the upper download link on Jeff's site to get the full version install. If you currently have PSK Express already installed on your PC, that is older than 2.1.8.6, start PSK Express and then click Help > Check For Update and follow the prompts to get the update that will interface with my software. We really need as many of you beta testing (and enjoying) PSK Express as possible. I've been around the block a few times with SSB and CW contests, but I am very new to digital. Many of you will have a better, intuitive feel for how the programs should behave together and Jeff and I welcome your input. Please join and then post your thoughts, suggestions and bug reports to Jeff's newly created PSK Express support group here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PSKExpress/info Getting Started To connect PSK Express to my software, from Amateur Contact Log and any N3FJP contest software with a digital mode (please test them all), click Settings > Application Program Interface and check the upper check box to enable the server on the form that appears. That's all you need to do with my software. Then, from PSK Express, click N3FJP > Setup and check the Enable Interface. Also check the Auto Tab option, if it is not checked already. Don't worry about setting up rig interface in PSK Express, my software will handle that (if you have it enabled). If successful, the upper portion of the PSK Express Display will look like this: To send text from the decode window directly to my software, just give the word a single right click. A small list of fields will appear. All you have to do is click on the field you want the value to transfer to. To tell N3FJP to log from PSK Express, just click the Log button, or click Clear to clear. One of the very cool things Jeff has programmed in PSK Express is the ability to determine which N3FJP program it is connected to and adapt accordingly. For example, when connected to AC Log, you have a number of fields you can transfer to (some are mapped to Other fields in set up): But when you are connected from PSK Express to my Field Day software, only the relevant fields are displayed: For contests requiring a serial number, PSK Express will also check with my software and transfer it back to PSK Express! Here is an example of CQ WPX: The PSK Express connection to N3FJP Software is still very much in beta development and we really need your help! Please give PSK Express a try now and let us know how you make out on the PSK Express e-mail group, as soon as you can. We would like to have as many bugs squashed as possible before CQ WW DX RTTY, which is less than two months away! In the unlikely event you don't find any bugs, please let us know that too! Jeff is also planning a streamlined version of PSK Express that hopefully will fit nicely around my contesting software when complete! Please be sure to thank Jeff for all the really hard work he has already put in to this project! We are eager to hear your feedback on the PSK Express e-mail group! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997. 1 Peter 3 vs 15: Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. AC Log 5.6, New Versions of All Contesting Software & WFD Rule Change Upgrade!
Hi All, I hope that you had a great Field Day! After operating Field Day from my home on emergency power the last few years, I had the pleasure of operating 2A with our club, the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest Society as NE3MD. We had a blast! If you have any questions on submitting your Field Day entry, you'll find all the details here: http://www.n3fjp.com/faq.html#q68 Amateur Contact Log 5.6 and new versions of all my contesting software are now available! As always, upgrades are free to registered users! I am particularly excited about this release. One of the new features - the ability to check entity confirmation status in your main log while contesting - is something I've dreamt about for a long time! I'm also very excited about the ability to use rig interface and send CW from multiple programs simultaneously! There's a lot of ground to cover, so let's start with a summary and follow with all the detail. New Features Summary - Ability to check main log entity confirmation status from contest software via API. - Implementation of an optional History File in all the contesting software. - Transfer QSO records easily via API (File > Transfer via API). - Rig Interface via API (Settings > Rig Interface > N3FJP API). - CW via API (Settings > Transmit > CW). - DX Spots Summary Graph (View > DX Spots Summary Graph). - With option to ID LoTW Users enabled, LoTW users will also be identified when tabbing from the Call field (eLogs > LoTW > ID LoTW Users) (AC Log only). - Type a frequency in the Call field and press enter to change frequency (with rig interface enabled). - Modified frequency change form behavior so that it will optionally close on action. - Additional API commands (API version 0.7). - Winter Field Day Contest Log 1.6 Now Available (reflects latest rule changes). Check Main Log Entity Confirmation Status While Contesting I am really excited about this new feature! Something that I've always wondered while working contests is whether the juicy DX I am calling is confirmed on that band and mode in my main log or not. In fact, some contests are as much about collecting new entities as the event itself. This entity just might be an All Time New One! When contesting, in the heat of the fray, there's never been a quick way to check, until now! Here's how: - From Amateur Contact Log 5.6, click Settings > API and check the upper checkbox that says TCP API Enabled (Server). Leave the lower Client checkbox unchecked. - In the contest software, click Settings > API and check the lower checkbox to Enable Entity Confirmation Check via API. Leave the upper Server check box unchecked. That's all there is to it. Just enter a call in the contest software's Call field for an unconfirmed entity in AC Log and press the space bar to tab. When you tab from the Call field in the contesting program, a status query will go out to AC Log via API to check the confirmation status and the result will be displayed in the contesting software's dialogue box! If you are running AC Log 5.5, your only alert will be unconfirmed on band and mode. If you are running AC Log 5.6, the alert options that will appear in the contest software include: Entity is an All Time New One Entity isn't confirmed on any band or mode Entity is confirmed, but hasn't been worked on current band and mode Entity is confirmed, but is unconfirmed on current band and mode There won't be a message if the entity is confirmed on the current band and mode. History File First, here's a bit of back story, since I've modified my position on this request. Over the years, many of you have asked me to add the ability to use a history file to prefill contest data, gleaned from exchanges you've had in previous contests. Until now I've been reluctant to implement that feature, believing that the exchange should actually be copied at least once during each contest. The following are the most common alternative viewpoints that users have been sending along, that have successfully, to a degree, changed my position: - Even though the data is prefilled, the operator still has to copy the exchange to make sure the data is correct for this contest, since this time the station you are working may be in a different category, etc. The only benefit is saving the effort of typing. The entire exchange still must be heard and understood, so the spirit of the contest is preserved and there is no ethical violation in using historical data. - ARRL, CQ and other organizations don't explicitly exclude using historical data to prefill, so it is permissible under the current rule set. N3FJP isn't the rule governing body and therefore it is inappropriate for N3FJP to impose additional restrictions that aren't addressed in the rules. - Most other contesting programs provide a prefill feature. Adding this feature will put me on equal contest footing with operators using other software alternatives. - I'm looking forward to handing out QSOs in this contest, but I am not going to submit my log for a contest score, so any rules governing history file usage won't apply to my circumstance. Though history files have been commonly used in many contesting programs for some time, most rule sets are silent on the use of history files. In casual conversations with various contest sponsors, some governing bodies encourage their use while others lean towards opposition. Personally, I feel that using DX Spotting provides a much greater competitive advantage than using historical data does, but that historical data is enough of an advantage that anyone using it should be required to submit in the Assisted category (whether they use DX Spotting or not), but that's just my opinion. As has been rightly pointed out, since I am not part of a rules governing body, that's not my call. As far as I know, you can currently use history files in any category. Like DX Spotting, which is generic in all my software, but only allowable in certain contests and categories, the history file feature is disabled by default. You can choose to use your history file as you or the contest rules deem appropriate. Implementation Each time you open an applicable contest program, a shared file named ContestHistory.txt is read. As always, when you tab from the Call field, the software will first check to see if you have worked the same station on another band during this contest and fill the pertinent exchange fields. If you enabled the use of the history file (Settings > History File) and you have not worked the station during this contest, the software will check the history file and fill any fields for which it finds data. REMEMBER, HISTORY VALUES MAY REQUIRE EDITING! The operator may be using a different exchange this time, so don't log the QSO unless you accurately hear and record the entire exchange! When you close the current contest program, the following happens: - Fields with current values are updated. - Calls new to the history file are added. - Calls for which there have not been any updates for more than 5 years are removed. - The file is saved. This history file is updated automatically when you close the software, so you build and maintain your history file simply by using each N3FJP Software contest program. If, for example, a state or section is exchanged in one program, it will be available in the next, even if you are using the second program with the history file feature for the first time. The file is shared among all applicable programs and resides in your N3FJP Shared folder (File > Show File Locations). Note that some contests, like CQ World Wide for example, don't receive any added exchange data benefit from the history file, simply because it isn't necessary. All the exchange data in CQ WW is already gleaned from the call sign. Still, I've added the history file feature in all the contesting software for consistency. It also provides the opportunity to see the name of the person you are working, regardless of contest, if the name is part of your history file. During the beta testing process, some users have asked if I am going to maintain a comprehensive history file for users to download. I'm not planning on doing that myself, but folks on the N3FJP_Software_Users e-mail group have already created a history file and made it available for download on the group! Others are welcome to do the same! Transfer QSO Records via API Transferring your log file via ADIF isn't hard, but with Amateur Contact Log 5.6 and the latest versions of my contest software, now it is even easier to transfer your QSOs after each contest. With Amateur Contact Log's API Server enabled (Settings > Application Program Interface), from the contest program, just click File > Transfer via API! Rig Interface & Sending CW via API Another new feature I'm really excited about is the ability to set up rig interface and / or send CW via API, which eliminates com port sharing problems among multiple programs. Often, when I have Amateur Contact Log open to hunt DX, there might also be one or more contests that I want to dabble in as well (state QSO parties for example), but since Windows won't let programs share a com port, simultaneous rig interface and sending CW from multiple programs has been tough. Now, using the API in the latest versions, you can set up one program (usually Amateur Contact Log) as the server, connect AC Log directly to your rig interface and / or CW interface as always and then let any other N3FJP Software programs access your rig and CW interface as well, for simultaneous operation! Here's how: - First, set up Amateur Contact Log for rig interface / CW interface normally (select your com port, etc.) and enable Amateur Contact Log's API Server (Settings > Application Program Interface and check the upper checkbox that says TCP API Enabled (Server)). - For rig interface from the contesting program, click Settings > Rig Interface and select N3FJP API. - For CW sending from the contesting program, click Settings > Transmit > CW setup and select the N3FJP API option. You'll now be able to keep both programs open, use rig interface and send CW from either one instantly! DX Spots Summary Graph Have you ever wondered if you are missing the hot band, or where to point your beam for the highest run rate? From any program click View > DX Spots Summary Graph for a display of the most recent 200 spots by band and continent. For example, if I'm just sitting down to do some contesting and I see a graph like the one below, where 20M and Europe have the most activity, I'll choose 20M and point my beam northeast to start. Since only spots that pass your filter (More Filtering button on the DX Spotting set up form) are tabulated, if you are only allowing spots posted from your country or call area, this will give you a great view of what's hot in your neck of the woods right now. This graph updates with each new DX spot, so you can keep it open if you like, to see your best bands and antenna orientations as the contest progresses! ID LoTW Users When Tabbing From Call Field As many of you know, Amateur Contact Log can be set to identify DX Spotted LoTW users with an L in the DX Spots list. That's great for spotted stations we work, but what about stations we come across that are calling CQ, or when we are calling CQ ourselves? Now, when you click eLogs > LoTW > ID LoTW Users and check the check box to enable the feature, LoTW users will also be identified when tabbing from the Call field in the dialogue label. Additional API Commands (API Version 0.7) I have added additional API commands for developers of other software packages, who would like to interface with my software, including: - Receive change events for the dialogue label. - Ability to write text to and change color of the dialogue label. - Set N3FJP Software to temporarily ignore rig polls (disables rig interface so your app can perform other functions that would be affected by rig interface). - Determine the API version of the N3FJP Software program that you are connected to. - Retrieve operator info (call sign, latitude / longitude, etc.). - Send Text to Speech. - Receive F key presses or all keydown events. - Do a lookup of the country list file based on a call sign. - Locate, read and change the form size of N3FJP Software. - Add records direct to the log file, with optional dupe checking on entry (alternative to Action Enter). - Send CW. Complete details and all the specifications are here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html Everyone, if you have a program that you would like to see interfaced with my software, please take a moment now, contact the developer and refer them here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html It may be your prompting that will help make the difference! AC Log 5.5, Contesting Pgm Updates, JTAlert Now Interfaces via API & More!
Hi All, I hope that you are doing well! Software development has been on a roll at N3FJP Software headquarters this spring! Amateur Contact Log 5.5 is Now Available! The main enhancement that will be immediately evident is the new band map display. In addition to the existing color codes indicating time, I've added more font and color coding as follows: - DX Spots where the entity is needed (Settings > New Contact & QSL Alert Options) is displayed in italics. - DX Spots where the entity is needed AND the spot is an LoTW user (use the ID LoTW Users button on the LoTW set up form to enable) is displayed in Red italics. In this example, E44YL, Palestine, is not confirmed on 40 CW in my log, she is not listed as an LoTW user, so her spot is italic. JT1CO, Mongolia is not confirmed on 40 CW in my log, he is included in the LoTW user list, so that spot will appear in red italic for the duration that it is displayed. The new color and font coding makes it very easy to look at the band map at a glance and see which stations are needed for your DX awards goals! Please visit here for all the details on setting up DX Spotting: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/bandmaphelp.html As always, upgrades are free to registered users. You can download Amateur Contact Log 5.5 from this page: http://www.n3fjp.com/aclog.html If you are running AC Log 4.0 or later, don't forget to uninstall your previous version from Windows Control Panel first! Complete upgrade steps for Amateur Contact Log are here: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html New Versions of All Contest Programs are Now Available! I've updated all the contesting programs, including both in state and out of state versions of all the state QSO programs to include these enhancements (where applicable): - Added Application Program Interface (API) functionality (Settings > Application Program Interface). - DX Spots where the entity is a needed multiplier are displayed in italics (in programs where applicable - not in state QSO party programs). - Added CW PTT to key linear amplifiers (Settings > Transmit > CW). - Added ability to temporarily disable band and mode updates from rig interface (press Ctrl + Shift + R). - Updated address label tags for Cabrillo output in compliance with the latest Cabrillo output specification. - Press Ctrl + Shift + S for programs to read the next serial number (for blind hams in programs where applicable). - Press Ctrl + Shift + H to hide the Horizontal / Vertical button on the band map (click a blue area of the band map first). - Band and mode (based on frequency) determined by band plan file. Some of these enhancements were in the previous release of the major contest programs, but now they have been integrated into the rest as applicable!: As always, these upgrades are free to registered users! JTAlert Now Interfaces with N3FJP Software! Laurie, VK3AMA has released a new version of his JTAlert, which interfaces directly with Amateur Contact Log via my new API! You'll find JTAlert here: http://hamapps.com/ And in case you had any doubt about the importance of letting other software developers know of your interest in their interfacing with my software, Laurie, JTAlert's author included the following in an e-mail direct to me: I underestimated the demand for ACLog support, given the large number of people who responded to my request for ACLog / JTAlert testers, otherwise I would have coded the support before now. Cheers de Laurie, VK3AMA Thanks everyone who wrote Laurie and your interest in participating in his beta! Please be sure to write other software developers, whose programs you would like to see interface with my software as well! It will only happen with your prompting! You can refer them to this page for all the Application Program Interface (API) specifications: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html Field Day is Coming - Check Software Installation Off the List! Field Day is just 9 weeks away! With all the other preparations on your "to do" list, now is a great time to check off the Field Day software installation. Amateur Contact Log 5.4 & Contest Upgrades Now Available!
Hi All, Amateur Contact Log 5.4 and upgrades for all the contesting software (except for the state QSO party programs - I still have those to finish) are now on the web site! As always, these upgrades are free to registered users! Enhancements include: - Added Application Program Interface (API) functionality (Settings > Application Program Interface). - Added CW PTT to key linear amplifiers (Settings > Transmit > CW). - Added ability to temporarily disable band and mode updates from rig interface (press Ctrl + Shift + R). - Added Audio alert of unworked or unconfirmed DX Spots, who are LoTW users in AC Log (press CTRL + Shift + L). Remember, to use this feature, please first set up the ID of LoTW users from AC Log's LoTW form. - Modified contesting software Cabrillo file address label tags, in conformance with the latest Cabrillo specifications. By far, the greatest emphasis (and largest amount of work) of this release has been the addition of the Application Program Interface (API) functionality. I often receive requests from folks who would like to interface their digital or logging programs with my logging software. To accommodate those requests, I have added easily implemented API functionality, to enable any other program to do just that! This API provides a way for other programs to connect with my software, write data to N3FJP Software text boxes, read data from text boxes and call functions like Enter, Dupe check, etc. Now it is up to either the authors of those programs to write code to connect to my software directly, or for anyone to code the necessary bridge to complete the interface. All the API related work I've done so far won't be evident until other software developers add this API in their software, so that they can connect to N3FJP Software. If you have a program that you would like to see interfaced with my software, please contact the developer now and refer them to this page! http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Application Program Interface Development Underway in N3FJP Software!
Hi All, Just a quick note to let you know that Application Program Interface (API) development is now underway in N3FJP Software! I often receive requests from folks who would like to interface their digital or logging programs with my logging software. As of February, 2016, I am just beginning to add Application Program Interface (API) functionality to enable any other program to do just that! The work I've done so far won't be evident until other programmers add connectivity to my software in their programs. If you have a program that you would like to see interfaced with my software, please contact the developer(s) and refer them here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/api.html I am looking forward to working with other developers in an iterative process, as we test and finalize this new code, so that we can maximize our combined functionality! Thanks! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997. 1 Peter 3 vs 15: Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. Field Day Contest Log 4.9 & School Club Roundup Next Week!
Good Morning All, ARRL Field Day Contest Log 4.9 is Now Available! ARRL just released their 2016 Field Day Packet, which introduces two new bonus point categories for promoting your Field Day site via Social Media and designating a Safety Officer: http://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-2016-field-day-packet-is-now-available-new-bonus-point-categories-announced I've updated the Field Day software accordingly. While I was at it, since most of us now submit our Field Day entries via http://www.b4h.net/cabforms/ and earn the extra bonus points for submitting on line, I've added a button at the top of the submittal form that will summarize the information you'll need for that online form and take you directly to the web site. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. You'll find Field Day Contest Log 4.9 here: http://www.n3fjp.com/fieldday.html ARRL School Club Roundup Reminder! Next week, beginning February 8th, we will hear lots of Schools and Clubs on the air during School Club Roundup week, so please be sure to work as many Schools and Clubs as you can! And don't forget, individuals can work other individuals for SCR points too, so work everyone calling CQ SCR! Each school is worth 5 multipliers and clubs who are not affiliated with schools are worth two multipliers, so clubs, please be sure to get on the air too! Individuals, don't be afraid to call CQ SCR, as some students are more comfortable searching and pouncing than running a frequency. Let's be sure to give the students plenty of stations to call! The complete rules are here: http://www.arrl.org/school-club-roundup And the software for this contest, which is free for everyone (no registration required at all) is here: http://www.n3fjp.com/schoolclubru.html And speaking of social Media, you'll find the new School Club Roundup Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SchoolClubRoundup/ Of course, School Club Round is super for students and clubs, but this event is a lot of fun for individuals too. In addition to working as many schools and clubs on as many bands and modes as you can, set some other goals too. Can you make at least one SCR contact in every state and province next week for a clean sweep? All, I have a special place in my heart for contests like Field Day and School Club Roundup. At 14 years old, I was introduced to Amateur Radio at a Field Day site. That one evening profoundly changed the course of my life. Had I not been given the kind encouragement and experienced the thrill and excitement of operating from the bottom of a pile up, I would very likely be doing something else right now and N3FJP Software would never have come to be. Let's be sure to give these young folks all the encouragement and as many QSOs as we possibly can next week! Corrected Link: Winter Field Day Password for Package Users - Quick Reminder!
Hi All, Oops, in this morning's e-mail, I accidentally pasted the rules link for the software location. You'll find the Winter Field Day Software here: http://www.n3fjp.com/winterfieldday.html Also, please be sure that you have downloaded the correct software from the link above. Several folks have been trying to set up the ARRL Field Day software (summer) to use for Winter Field Day by mistake. To be able to log the Winter Field Day exchange and submit your log, you have to use the Winter Field Day software (version 1.4). The correct program will say Winter Field Day Contest Log 1.4 in the Title bar at the top left. Package users who have registered in the past year - you will find your Winter Field Day password listed as SPAR Winter Field Day Contest Log. The SPAR folks had been administering Winter Field Day until recently. And for those of you who would like to participate in Winter Field Day but don't want to venture out in the cold, don't worry, you don't have to! There are categories for indoor and home stations and you can use commercial power! Multiple Upgrades, NPOTA & Parity Act!
Hi All, Happy New Year! I have a few announcements to share... Upgrades to the Following Contesting Programs are Now Available! I've made the following minor enhancements to these programs: ARRL Field Day Contest Log 4.8: Delta stations worked by other Delta stations are no longer included in the QSO point total. Those operating in the Delta class will still have to remove the Delta stations worked from your log before creating your submission (click File > Remove Delta Stations to easily do so). If you aren't planning to operate in the Delta class for Field Day 2016, staying with Field Day Contest Log version 4.7 is fine. http://www.n3fjp.com/fieldday.html South Carolina In State and Out of State 1.4: Updated to calculate bonus station multipliers. http://www.n3fjp.com/stateqsoparty.html ARRL November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.9: Displays bearing and miles, which updates when you enter the section. ARRL 10 Meter Contest Log 4.8: Unworked states and provinces turn green when spotted (like the Sweepstakes software does). Click on the spot to tune your rig to the spot frequency (with rig interface enabled). As always, upgrades are free to registered users! ARRL National Parks on the Air (NPOTA)! NPOTA (https://npota.arrl.org/) is off and running! Lots of folks are quite enthusiastic about this year long event and asking: Can I use Amateur Contact Log for ARRL's National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) 2016 event? You'll find that answer on my web site here: http://www.n3fjp.com/faq.html#q84 Here is text from that FAQ: Like ARRL's Centennial QSO Party in 2014, scoring for NPOTA is handled by ARRL's Log Book of the World (LoTW). Amateur Contact Log worked just fine the ARRL Centennial QSO Party and it will be fine for NPOTA in 2016 too. NPOTA scoring is handled by upload to LoTW and Amateur Contact Log has all the features you need for that. To keep your NPOTA score updated, you only have to upload the NPOTA QSO to LoTW, just as you would any other QSO record. LoTW will determine and confirm the units you work based on the activating station, which he will upload to LoTW as soon as practical after the activation. You can see your score and the leader board by logging into LoTW. It isn't necessary to track the NPOTA units you work in AC Log since LoTW is performing that function, but you can always use one of the Other fields to do that too if you like. To display and customize the location of an additional Other Field, click Settings > Edit Fields Displayed. To Rename an Other Field, click Settings > Other Field Titles and Fill Behavior. As a chaser, just log the QSO normally and upload to LoTW. If you are an activator, the 2016 release of TQSL 2.2.x will allow users to create station locations that include an NPS unit. Users will not have to request additional call sign certificates for the NPOTA event unless they operate from an NPS unit using a portable identifier, such as W3IZ/4, in which case they can simply use TQSL to request a signed call sign certificate for the appended call sign. Amateur Radio Parity Act - This Literally Takes About 60 Seconds, So Please Do This Now! You all know the importance of a successful outcome for the Amateur Radio Parity Act. Club Score Processor 1.0 Now Available & Very Cool VK2GGC CQ WW Video!
Hi Gang, If you've ever wondered what it's like to operate CQ World Wide from Australia, this really cool video from the VK2GGC contest station captures the 2015 excitement beautifully! Not only does it include aerial shots of their rocking station, lovely imagery and display my software in action, there is even a Q with me about 3 minutes in! If you aren't already excited for this weekend's 10 Meter contest, you will be after watching this! https://youtu.be/1Mf8VIPyii8 And speaking of the fun and thrills of club contesting... Club Score Processor 1.0 is Now Available! Club Score Processor is free software designed to add the current contest scores for all the individual members in your club and display the tally in real time, updating automatically throughout the contest weekend on a single web page. You can download Club Score Processor here: http://www.n3fjp.com/clubscore.html Background: It's really neat how one thing leads to the next! I originally added the FTP status upload feature to my contesting software with Field Day in mind, so that club members could see how their Field Day station was doing in real time when they were away from the Field Day site. Before long, I started getting requests to add the status upload feature to all the contest programs. Soon folks, including our own club, the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest Society, (www.nemarc.org) started enjoying seeing how each club member was doing in other contests too. It really adds to the fun, camaraderie and competitive juices on contest weekends! We quickly realized that instead of browsing to each individual upload to see how our club members are doing one by one, it would be even nicer to have all the essential information on one web page, with a current grand total club score displayed in real time! That thought was the genesis of this Club Score Processor software, which retrieves the pertinent information from each of the individual club member's web uploads, combines it and presents a total score and leader board! Here's an example of our actual club page that this Club Score Processor created at the conclusion of 2015 November Sweepstakes SSB: The total page will refresh automatically every 60 seconds, as long as one of your club members keeps this program running during the contest (it's okay to close and start the program again later if needed). When the program is closed, the web page will remain, but of course it will not have new data to display. You'll find complete setup details on the download page here: http://www.n3fjp.com/clubscore.html Even if you don't have a formal club, you and enjoy seeing how your friends locally are doing, or track anyone who is running my software with the upload enabled (even me). All you need is their URL! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information... Winter Field Day 1.4, New NE Abbr, NPOTA & DX Spotting Settings - C&P Contesting!
Hi All, Winter Field Day Contest Log 1.4 is Now Available! Originally developed in 2006 and nurtured by the good folks at SPAR, management of Winter Field Day has transferred and is now sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association. The goal of the new sponsors for Winter Field Day is to build WFD up to the popularity of ARRL's Field Day summer classic! Towards that end, the Winter Field Day Association folks have dropped temperature from the exchange, bringing the Winter Field Day exchange in line with ARRL's June version. I've updated the Winter Field Day Contest Log in version 1.4 to reflect the new rule changes. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. You'll find version 1.4 here: http://www.n3fjp.com/winterfieldday.html For more information on Winter Field Day, please visit the Winter Field Day Association web site: http://www.winterfieldday.com/ Nebraska QSO Party Abbreviation Changes. The Nebraska QSO Party folks have updated their county abbreviations. It is not necessary to reinstall the software, 3.3 is still fine. Before the contest, just click File > Download County List File, restart the software and you will be all set! ARRL's National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) 2016 event! I've been receiving a lot of questions on which of my programs to use for NPOTA. Amateur Contact Log worked just fine for the ARRL Centennial QSO Party last year and it will be fine for NPOTA in 2016 too. NPOTA scoring is handled by upload to LoTW and Amateur Contact Log has all the features you need for that. All the details on NPOTA are here: http://www.arrl.org/NPOTA Enjoy the event! DX Spotting Settings and Click (or Tune) and Pounce Contesting - Block Contest Duplicates! When contesting, anytime you can run a frequency, go for it! You'll likely see your highest QSO rates of the contest! For the times when you can't, or when you are seeking multipliers, there is a combination of DX Spotting filtering settings that will help keep your run rates higher. During CQ WW SSB, my friend Gary, WC3N, running 500 watts and a hex beam, consistently maintained Click & Pounce rates between 70 and 90 Qs per hour for big chunks of the contest! Search & Pounce, without DX Spotting, consumes a lot of time tuning to the next station, waiting for him to give his call, only to find he may already be in your log. It's fatiguing too. DX Spotting speeds the process considerably and reduces fatigue as you only have to click on a DX Spot to check if he is a duplicate and, with rig interface, tune your rig right to the spot frequency. You aren't searching, DX Spotting is doing the searching for you, you're Clicking & Pouncing (or Tuning & Pouncing if you don't have rig interface enabled). The DX Spotting filter setting in all my contest software that makes the process faster still is enabling the option to block contest duplicates. That way, you know that every new DX Spot that appears on the band map is a new station, not a duplicate! You don't have to click on a spot first to check if he is a duplicate and it keeps your band map cleaner, so you can move more efficiently from station to station. With the block contest duplicates filter enabled, when Click & Pounce (or Tune & Pounce) contesting, using the band map in the vertical orientation, the sequence goes like this: - Left click on the topmost spot to enter the call in the Call field and tune your rig to the spot frequency. - Press space bar, work the station and press enter. - Click Spot Last. - Right click on the spot on the DX band map to clear it from the band map and move the next station to the top of the band map. - Repeat With these settings and sequence you can really fly! The band map essentially becomes your "to do" list or checklist of stations to work and allows you to systematically work right through the band. Once you've cleared off all the stations on one band, move to the next band. By the time you finish the next band, a whole new list of spots will have been posted to the first band, none of which are duplicates! For complete details including narrative and videos on using the band map and DX Filter settings, please see my DX Spotting band map help page here: http://www.n3fjp.com/help/bandmaphelp.html And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information... CQ WW DX RTTY Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available & Two Reminders!
Hi All, CQ WW DX RTTY Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available! I've just completed a separate program to support the annual CQ WW DX RTTY Contest. I've supported the CW and SSB versions of the contest for a long time, but a separate program is required for RTTY because of the significant rule differences for the RTTY version of the contest. CQ WW DX RTTY Contest Log 1.0 includes all the features you've come to expect in N3FJP Software including dupe checking, scoring, DX spotting, rig interface, super check partial, band map, etc. Best of all, you'll likely find it very easy and intuitive to use! Ed, W4ELP has already checked the new program and verified that it properly interfaces with DM 780 via his bridge. As always, additional programs I add to the N3FJP Software Package are free to N3FJP Software Package users. You can use the same password for CQ WW DX RTTY Contest Log that we sent you for the CW / SSB version of the software. You'll find CQ WW DX RTTY Contest Log 1.0 here: http://www.n3fjp.com/cqww.html Enjoy! Two Reminders.... School Club Roundup starts this coming Monday (10/19) and runs through Friday! Some folks think that schools only contact other schools during School Club Roundup, but that's not the case at all. Students earn points for every contact they make with everyone, including individual stations, so they will love to have your call in their log! We want our young folks to have a great experience next week, so please be sure to get on the air and work as many schools and radio clubs as you can. Clubs are worth an extra multiplier, so make sure your radio club is operating SCR week too! The rules for SCR have been changed to allow working stations once per band and mode, so please be sure to use version 1.2 of my free School Club Roundup software and try to work the school stations on all the bands and modes! Remember, while the emphasis of School Club Roundup is schools and radio clubs, individuals can participate, also work other individuals for points, submit logs and earn wallpaper too! Is there an Amateur Radio club at your local elementary, middle, high school or college? If the answer is no and you enjoy working with young folks, please think seriously about starting one! School Club Roundup is a wonderful, week long opportunity for students to learn about Amateur Radio, get on the air and work other schools, clubs and individuals. It provides lots of teachable moments and thanks to your involvement, just may help shape a destiny! You may want to start a club for students solo, or you may partner with a few local seasoned hams together to introduce young folks to the joys and fascinating hobby of Amateur Radio. I had the great pleasure of working a good number of schools during last Feburary's SCR and I'm really looking forward to next week! Even most of the elementary kids did great! One of my favorite moments was when I asked a very young lady what kind of radio she was using. With great enthusiasm, she responded: "It is a black one!" Hi All, Amateur Contact Log 5.3 is Now Available! Amateur Contact Log 5.3 enhancements Include: - Club Log upload (click eLogs > Club Log and follow the directions on the form that appears). - Option on eQSL form so that you can decide whether you want your eQSL uploads to mark the records as QSL Sent / Received or not. - Better organization of top level menu options by creating eLogs (think external logs or electronic logs) and placing Club Log, eQSL and LoTW under that top level heading on AC Log's main form. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. If you would like to enjoy these new features, you'll find AC Log 5.3 here: http://www.n3fjp.com/aclog.html Just follow the upgrade steps detailed here: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html School Club Roundup is Next Month! Is there a radio club at your local school? Is there an Amateur Radio club at your local elementary, middle, high school or college? If the answer is no and you enjoy working with young folks, please think seriously about starting one! School Club Roundup is a wonderful, week long opportunity for students to learn about Amateur Radio, get on the air and work other schools, clubs and individuals, It provides lots of teachable moments and thanks to your involvement, just may help shape a destiny! You may want to start a club for students solo, or you may partner with a few local seasoned hams together to introduce young folks to the joys and fascinating hobby of Amateur Radio. I had the great pleasure of working a good number of schools during last Feburary's SCR and I'm really looking forward to October's! Even most of the elementary kids did great! One of my favorite moments was when I asked a very young lady what kind of radio she was using. With great enthusiasm, she responded: "It is a black one!" And don't forget, School Club Roundup is for regular Amateur Radio clubs and individual operators too. In fact, clubs are worth an extra multiplier, so make sure your club is operating SCR week too. Also, be sure to get on the air yourself to hand out some contacts as well! The next School Club Round runs October 19 - October 23. All the details are here: http://www.arrl.org/school-club-roundup And my free software for SCR is here (make sure you are running version 1.2 as there have been rule changes since February): http://www.n3fjp.com/schoolclubru.html Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015. N3FJP Software is Running Fine on Windows 10 For Almost Everyone & AVG Security Software Locking Comments Field
Hi All, Windows 10 Update Lots of folks have been writing me, wondering how everyone is making out running my software on Windows 10. The great news is that the vast majority of reports have been that my software is running just fine on Windows 10 with no problems whatsoever! A very few folks have reported that after the Windows 10 upgrade, their settings and log file directories were renamed during the upgrade, so AC Log started as if it was unregistered and their log file was blank. If this happens to you, you can correct it by either renaming the specific directories back to what they were named prior to the upgrade, or reentering your password and clicking File > Open, navigating to your log file and selecting it. Before upgrading to Windows 10, I suggest you click File > Show File Locations from Amateur Contact Log's menu options and noting the pertinent paths, just in case you have to change the directory name(s) back. Just a couple others have reported that following the upgrade their log and settings files directories weren't renamed, but the permissions were modified so that they could no longer save entries or settings. You can remedy this by changing the permissions of the appropriate directories back to allow updates (use Windows Explorer, Right Click on the directory, click Properties and then the Security tab). There have been only one or two reports from folks that could not get the software to run after the upgrade. It's not clear what went awry in those cases, but again, this is the exception. Almost everyone has had no trouble at all upgrading to Windows 10 and then running my software. Still, be sure to back up your log file to an external medium by clicking File > Create Backup before you begin the upgrade, just in case. AVG Security Software Locking Comments Field A number of AVG Security Protection Software Users have reported that when they type in the Comments field in AC Log, AC Log becomes unresponsive. The problem is with the AVG software, not AC Log, so there isn't anything that I can do to correct the problem here. If you want to stay with AVG, you'll need to get them to fix their product. I have attempted to contact the AVG folks multiple times, so far without resolution, but since I'm not an AVG customer, you may have more luck: http://www.avg.com/submit-sample Even if you do decide to use different virus protection, I would really appreciate it if you would please go ahead and submit the problem report. Hopefully if enough folks contact them they will eventually take notice and correct the problem.
