New, C# NAQP Contest Log 3.0 Now Available - Free!
Hi All, First, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! After months and months of work, I am really excited to share this announcement with you! NAQP Contest Log 3.0 Beta is Now Available - Free! As many of you already know, I'm in the process of rewriting all our software in C#, so our logging programs will continue to run on future operating systems after Microsoft stops supporting VB6 programs. Since March of 2012, I've been working on the C# template that will be the basis for all the individual programs, and AC Log too. Folks have been beta testing the template for the last few weeks. While I'm sure some additional bugs are waiting to be found, we've likely squashed the big ones and we are now to the point of bringing any remaining to light by giving it a good try in an actual contest! The tried and true, VB6 versions of NAQP programs are still available on the website, but if you are willing to give the new C# version a try, understanding that it has never been tested in an actual contest before, I would really appreciate it! Version 3.0 has just about all the features of the old VB6 programs (it is networkable) and lots of new ones, such as a display map, post contest statistics and many others, too numerous to list here, that you'll discover as you explore the menu options. I really want to encourage as many folks as possible to try version 3.0, so I've disabled the 30 contact limitation for unregistered users to make it free to everyone for this winter's NAQP contests! All I ask is that you send me a quick e-mail after the contest and let me know if all is okay, or if you encountered any anomalies. I would really like to hear from everyone trying the new version, and especially folks who run multi transmitter in a networked environment. If you aren't familiar with the North American QSO Party contest, you'll find all the rules here: http://www.ncjweb.com/naqprules.php The dates for the contest are 1/12/13 for CW, 1/19 for SSB and 2/23 for RTTY (Note - Winkey in version 3.0 functions much like my VB6 programs, but enhancements to the Winkey portion of the software are in the works thanks to Steve, K1EL. Also, the rewrite does not presently interface with K7RE RTTY). You can download version 3.0 from the NAQP page of my website, www.n3fjp.com or directly from this e-mail by clicking on this link: http://n3fjp.ky1v.com/NAQP.exe Before I can move forward, converting the template to other contesting programs (which will be a big job at 2 weeks per program and about 50 programs to rewrite), it's really important we verify the template is working well. Your using version 3.0 for this contest and letting me know how it goes will be a great help and I will really appreciate it! Thanks in advance! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information... If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package or N3FJP's Software Package and CD for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. Please send us an e-mail directly and we'll let you know your balance. N3FJP's Software Package includes approximately 50 programs for contesting, net management, general logging and other Amateur Radio related applications. In addition to full use of all these programs, registered package customers are also entitled to receive free passwords for any new software that is added to the package and free upgrades to existing programs. You'll find all the details on the Register Now page at www.n3fjp.com. Donations are Gratefully Accepted! And in response to the often asked question for which Kimberly and I are very grateful... "I know your upgrades are free, but I also realize how much time and effort coding these enhancements and new programs take and that your pricing policy doesn't fully reflect that. Can I send you something to show my appreciation for your continued efforts?" Yes, thanks so much, your continued support in any amount is very welcome and deeply appreciated! You can use this page: http://www.n3fjp.com/donate.htm or send your contribution by mail to: G. Scott Davis 118 Glenwood Road Bel Air, MD 21014-5533 Thank you so much for your continued support! N3FJP VHF Program Upgrades & Update on Rewrite Progress!
Hi All, I have two quick updates this morning: VHF Contest 3.0 and VHF Network 2.5 are now available! I've upgraded these programs to include the new ARRL VHF 3 band and FM only categories for Cabrillo output that will be options for the next contest in January. This is the only change to these programs, so if you are not planning to use one of these categories, using 2.9 Contest or 2.4 Network is still fine. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. The C# rewrite is going well and I need your help! As most of you know, I am in the process of rewriting all my software in C#, using the .NET framework, so that we can have confidence N3FJP Software will continue to run well, many operating systems into the future. I'm using a two stage process. First I plan to write a template that has the basic functionality common to all my contesting software. Once complete, I will roll out the contest specific programs using the template as a base. I'm thrilled to report that after about 8 months work, the template is nearly complete! With your help, I'll be able to start releasing new, C#.Net versions of all my software soon! The original versions of my software have been run on a huge variety of operating systems, hardware and network configurations. Even more importantly, my programs have responded to combinations of user sequences of clicks, entries and data that I could never have anticipated before or simulate now. As anything unanticipated came to light I had the opportunity to make adjustments as needed. To approach that same level of confidence as I release the new software versions, I would love to have everyone try the template now, see if the forms display properly on your PC, experiment with all the features (including networking), pretend you are in a contest, enter contacts, write the Cabrillo file (3.0 by the way), see if the graph displays correctly, etc. before the rewrite is used in an actual contest! About the only thing that is not complete in the new template is the map. With beta version 0.08, the only map sections that should color are EPA, NV and WCF (and even those aren't coloring cleanly yet). Also, I have some initial Winkey code that seems to be okay, but I am working with Steve, K1EL (of Winkey) on some changes there. Otherwise, all the other features (besides help) are finished, unless you find something that isn't working as we think it should! The template I'm building now will be the basis for all the contests including Field Day in June. This is the best opportunity, right now, to make sure that the software you use for your 2013 Field Day works as well, if not better, than years past on your PC / monitor in the way you are used to using it. This is also a great time to suggest any other enhancements that you would like to see in my contesting software. Please download the template from: http://n3fjp.ky1v.com/TEMPLATE.exe When you start the program, if all is working right, you should see a registration screen. To remove the screen to test the registration code and allow additional contacts past the 30 contact limit, please enter A in the call field and 6500 in the password field. Then please simulate contest entry, test every menu item and function and send me a quick e-mail letting me know all is well or what problems you encountered. Thanks so much for your help. I really, really appreciate it! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information... LoTW is Currently Down for Maintenance
Hi All, Just an FYI. I've been getting lots of e-mail today about being unable to connect to LoTW. Anytime something was working and then suddenly stops, the problem is usually the service, not the software. You can always check LoTW's status by clicking on the LoTW link at arrl.org. Here is their current report: http://www.arrl.org/news/logbook-of-the-world-experiencing-maintenance-issues 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

Beta Testers for C# Rewrite Needed!
Hi All, As many of you know, I am currently rewriting all my software in C#, so that we can be certain my software will continue to run past Windows 8. I've got a long way to go, but I've covered enough ground where beta testing will be a great help. Long story short, the development of my software the first time around was a multi year, iterative process, where I would add a few new features, we would test them, work out the bugs and move on, adding more features and additional programs over a long period of time. With the rewrite, it is everything at once and none of it has been tested! It is not even clear if the installer (which is also new) is going to behave as expected. It may seem on the surface like the functionality of what I've completed so far is pretty basic, but there is a lot more going on under the hood than even I remembered. Every line of code is new. Even the form sizing code for various resolutions (and the placement of controls to accommodate that) is all from scratch (and redesigned for better display on contemporary monitors). My plan is to create a template that will be the foundation of the rewrite of all my software (contesting programs and AC Log). It will be a lot easier to write the features and work out the bugs once and then modify the template for AC Log and each contest than the other way around, so I really want to get this right and I very much need your help to do that. If you are comfortable with experimentation and would like to help me with that, I would really appreciate it! Please download this beta. It is very rough - not all the features are coded yet, but most of the important ones are. Please give it a try and see how many ways you can break it: http://n3fjp.ky1v.com/TEMPLATE.exe After you install the software, you can launch it from the N3FJP - Affirmatech program group (I'm using a new Windows program group for the rewrite to help users differentiate from the old and new versions). Right now the main form (and dupe checking) of this template is geared towards Field Day, but I left all the columns at the top and you can see all the fields on the Edit form (click More), so even if your only interest is AC Log or another contest, you can check it out and see the direction I'm headed with the fields I plan to accommodate. Here are some things to try: - ADIF import and export (your can import your current log from AC Log). - Sending CW, (see how the timing works out). - Rig interface (make sure the program follows your rig as you tune around and click on DX Spots to tune your rig to the spot frequency). - Really important - Try setting up on multiple PCs and updating a common data file, preferably with DX spotting going and while interfacing with your rig (have as many functions working simultaneously as possible). - With multiple PCs set up, try the network display. messaging features and make sure the display shows the band changes of multiple clients. - Try the DX Spotting features (and associated form sizing, which will be user customizable on all the programs). See if after you close the software, you can log back in okay automatically. - See if the DX spotting display returns the right countries (so we know my country lookup code is working). - With DX spotting enabled, start another client on your network and see if you can get the DX spots VIA the lan. - Try writing a 3.0 Cabrillo file. - Try the File Save, Save As, Open and New functions locally and across your network. - Make sure duplicates are checked on entry (right now, set up for Field Day where Call, Band and Mode must match). - Try removing duplicates by clicking File > Remove Duplicates from the menu option (right now, set up for Field Day where Call, Band and Mode must match). - See how the forms display (I only have contemporary sized monitors here to test, but I'd like to accommodate old style monitors if possible). If a form looks goofy (labels overlapping, etc.) please send me a screen shot and let me know what monitor display resolution you are running. Please let me know how you make out! I'm really eager to hear your reports! You can either e-mail me direct, or if you like, you are welcome to join us on the N3FJP Software Development group: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/N3FJP_Software_Development/ Thanks in advance for your help. The quicker we can work out the bugs and be confident in the new code, the quicker we can move forward and enjoy the new versions! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

Novembr Sweepstakes - 2 Important Reminders and 2 Tips
Hi All, With the November Sweepstakes CW contest this weekend, here are two important reminders. Please make sure that you are running November Sweepstakes Contest Log version 4.7! I've upgraded version 4.7 to accept the new Ontario sections. Older versions will not accept these sections. While you are at it, please make sure that you download and install the latest versions of the Field Day and ARRL 160 software too, because the same new sections apply! As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Please be mindful of the time change! My software currently checks your UTC offset on startup, not continuously (I'm upgrading that in the C# rewrite). If you work through the night, you'll need to adjust your UTC offset manually. If you close the program before the time change and then start it again afterwards, the software will remind you. And two tips for those of you taking advantage of the rig interface features... - As many of you know, if you operate in a category that allows DX spotting, unworked sections that are spotted will turn green on the main form of the November Sweepstakes log, as well as be displayed in the list box at the bottom. You can click the display to see the frequency of the spot. What is a surprise to some is that while the section is green, with rig interface enabled, you can click on the green section label and your rig will tune right to the spot frequency! - Aside from clicking on DX spots to control your rig, my software is generally designed to follow your rig, but you can control some of the basic functions of your rig from the software as well. While the main form is displayed with rig interface enable, press Ctrl G. A form that will appear that provides some basic rig control functions. November Sweepstakes and Field Day are my two personal favorites and I'm really looking forward to SS this year! Trying for the sweep is really fun and I hope to work you along the way! Amateur Contact Log 3.3 Now Available & 3 Other Tidbits!
Hi All, Amateur Contact Log 3.3 is Now Available! I received notification this week from Fred at QRZ that they are changing the XML callbook lookup URL again, so I have updated AC Log accordingly. I've also set up the code to make the URL user modifiable, so it will be easier to keep up with any future changes. If you use QRZ's online lookup, it is important that you upgrade now as Fred will be discontinuing the old link soon. This is the only change to AC Log, so if you are not using QRZ's on line subscription service, staying with AC Log 3.2 is fine. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Please download the latest from www.n3fjp.com. Be sure to let AC Log install in its own, default directory. Never install over top an existing program! November Sweepstakes is Only a Few Weeks Away! We are still getting e-mail daily from folks just discovering Ontario has been divided into new sections, so I'm sure there are many folks who haven't yet received that word. My software is ready to go with the new sections and you will definitely need to upgrade prior to the contest, because the old versions won't log the new sections. My fear is I'm going to be flooded with e-mail the day the contest starts, saying "Help, I can't log the new sections!". As long as you have downloaded the latest for Sweepstakes, ARRL 160 and Field Day, you will be fine. Quick Update on the C#.NET Rewrite Progress. For those of you who have been following along, you know that I am in the process of rewriting all my software in C#.NET, upgrading from VB6. Microsoft has discontinued support for the VB6 development environment and there is no guarantee that programs written in VB6 will run on future operating systems (I do understand they are running fine on Windows 8). While I have a long way yet to go, I've been at it for about six months now and it is going well. I am currently building a template that will be used as a foundation for all the software. Once the template is complete, I will then start writing the individual programs. I have already completed CW sending (via the PC), Telnet, country lookup, ADIF Import / Export, network display, rig interface and network functions (multiple clients connecting to a common database, adding, updating and deleting records, etc.). There is no way to predict how long it is going to take. Some days I make good progress. Others it literally takes all day to get one line of code working the way I need it to. When I started, my goal had been to complete the template by next summer (phase 1) and then roll out the approximately 50 programs at what may be an optimistic pace of a program a week after that (phase 2). I'm fairly sure that I will beat the time planned for phase 1 of the rewrite project. We will see how phase 2 goes after that. Please join us at the Water Cooler Frequency on 21.446! I mentioned this concept last announcement, there has been good interest and we have settled on 21.446, which is working well! You know the moment when you've been at work on a project for hours and you just have to get up for a minute, grab a drink at the water cooler and clear your head by enjoying a quick chat with a coworker? I love working from home, but I sure miss that office diversion. It turns out others do too, so we are randomly meeting at the metaphorical water cooler on 21.446 daily for brief chats about sports, the weather and anything ham related. We'd love to chat with you there too! NAQP Contest Log Upgrades & Meet Us At The Water Cooler!
Hi All, I have an announcement, a reminder and an interesting project to share: NAQP Contest Log 2.7 and NAQP Network Log 2.7 are now available! Following the most recent NAQP contest, it came to light that I still had the abbreviation for LB in the section list. I have changed the abbreviation to NL with these new releases. That's the only change for these programs. As always, upgrades are free to registered users and you can download the latest from www.n3fjp.com. The Ontario Section Change has already been incorporated into Field Day, November Sweepstakes and the ARRL 160 contest logs. I've been getting e-mail from folks daily who are just discovering that Ontario has been split into four sections and are wondering if I will update my software accordingly. The new versions for these contests are already on the website, so please be sure to download the latest before the upcoming contests. By the way, if you like Field Day, odds are you will love the thrill of seeking out a clean sweep in November Sweepstakes this fall. If you've never given Sweepstakes a try, or it has been a while, plan on it ths year. You'll have a great time! That concludes the N3FJP Software announcements for this e-mail, but if you are interested in some on air activity, please read on... Meet us at the water cooler! What follows is an idea that is in the very early brainstorming stages, but seems to have some good interest. You know the moment when you've been at work on a project for hours and you just have to get up for a minute, grab a drink at the water cooler and clear your head by enjoying a quick chat with a coworker? I love working from home, but I do miss that diversion. I don't know how many of you either work from home or are home full time, that find yourself in a similar situation. You need quiet to get stuff done, but every now and then, a few moments of brief conversation would be a welcome diversion to clear the cobwebs and enhance productivity. I started monitoring 50.125 while I was coding, looking for a frequency that wasn't too busy or distracting. It is fun when the band opens, but days go by where I don't hear a thing. I thought that if there are other folks who find themselves in similar circumstances, it would be fun to pick an otherwise quiet, out of the way frequency, maybe somewhere on the great expanse of 10 meters, to leave our rigs tuned with the squelch up while we are working. When you need that mental stretch, just put out your call for a quick 5-10 minute good morning / hello and chat. I know 10 meters is unpredictable and may not have the perfect propagation characteristics, but that would be part of the interest and fun. You never know who we might hear and when! So, I floated the "water cooler" concept on the N3FJP_Software_Users group and there seems to be some good interest. We just need to coordinate a frequency that will work well and get enough folks participating to give the frequency a good test. Right now, we are trying 28.495, but we will likely experiment with other bands and frequencies too. To coordinate the frequencies we are going to try, we have created the Sky & Ground Wave, Water Cooler Frequency Channel coordination e-mail group! The purpose of this group is to brainstorm and coordinate an Amateur Radio frequency that we can monitor for occasional, quick chats when we are otherwise engaged in other tasks, but a brief diversion is welcome! If this concept interests you, please join! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WaterCoolerFrequency/ Thanks for your interest in this project! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information... Thanks for Rig Interface Help & WXWarn in QST New Products!
Hi All, Thanks so much to all who have helped me with the rig interface beta testing of my C# rewrite this past week. With one or two minor exceptions that I'm finalizing now (mode returns for the Yaesu - Older selection for just a couple rigs), I'm now getting good reports on every option listed! I could not have done this section of code without you and I really appreciate your help, thank you! I also wanted to share the thrill I had this week to see my WXWarn weather software written about in the New Products section of September's QST on page 51! I was leafing through the magazine when I saw some software that looked kind of like mine, so I took a closer look and realized, hey that is mine! http://www.wxspots.com Thanks again all! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

Beta Testers for C# Rig Interface Code Needed!
Hi All, As most of you know, I'm in the early stages of rewriting N3FJP software in C#.NET to make certain it will be compatible with operating systems beyond Windows 8. I've started with one of the hardest parts - rig interface, because it is really hard to do without the actual rigs connected to test. I put the e-mail below out a few days ago on the Users group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/N3FJP_Software_Users/). While I've had a lot of great response and I think we have all Kenwood and Icom rigs working fine, there are still a number of Yaesu and Ten Tec rigs that I haven't received reports for. If you have one of these models and would take a few minutes to give it a test run, I would really appreciate it. Speaking of beta testing, I know some of you are very interested in beta testing and software development, so I've created a separate group for those interested in software development and would like to help with beta testing: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/N3FJP_Software_Development/ All are welcome and invited to join the new group and your help will be very much appreciated! Here is the original e-mail sent to the Users group last week: Hi All, After weeks of work, I finally have a C# version of the rig interface code ready for beta testing. Every line of code is new, even things most folks take for granted like sizing for user's resolution. This form was the single most difficult and time consuming part of developing our logging software in VB6 the first time around, so I've decided to try and knock out one of the hardest parts of the C# rewrite first. I have only been able to test it on Kenwood and Icom radios here, which is just two of the 17 rig options I've rewritten code for. Quite frankly, I'll be amazed if any of the other options will work at all. Things came to light in how C# handles characters differently than VB6 only when the rigs were actually connected and I could see the data. Since I suspect you would much rather have me ship my code to you for beta testing than for you to ship your rigs to me, I will really appreciate your help in working out the bugs that are bound to currently exist! ;) Please install the program by clicking on this link: http://n3fjp.ky1v.com/RI.exe The program should detect and list your available Com ports. Please select the port you are using for rig interface. If your rig is on the list, please select it and give it a try (Icom and Kenwood users, please send me your reports too. Confirmation of my tests will be comforting with those two rigs). - Please test your ability to poll the current frequency and mode (PH or CW will be returned. Other modes will be added later). - Please enter a frequency in the CW portion of an Amateur band and click Send. Your rig should read CW. Then enter a frequency in the phone portion of any band. Your rig should switch to the appropriate sideband when it tunes to the frequency you enter. - Please try clicking on the mode buttons to change modes (without changing frequency). - After your tests, success or fail, while you are polling your rig, please click the Copy Data to Clipboard button and e-mail me the results. As long as there is buffer data, it should be helpful in working out the bugs. Also let me know if the change frequency and mode functions worked properly. If your rig is NOT on the list, but you would like me to add it. - Select Other from the rig list - Check your radio's manual for the command to poll the frequency from your rig - Enter the command in the Command field (For two character hex commands, include spaces between each two character set (click on Icom for an example)). - If your rig requires two character conversion to hex, make sure the conversion check box is selected. Otherwise, deselect it. - Click Test. Once you have your settings properly selected, data will at least be returned to the buffer (I've verified that works here). Once data is being returned to the buffer, click the Copy Data to Clipboard button and paste it into an e-mail, along with the specs from your manual that I'll need to decode the data. I can't promise, but I'll do my best. Again, having your actual buffer data to work with will be a great help. All, thanks so much for taking the time to test this section of code. With all the various rigs and protocols out there, there is no way I can do it here without you. As the inevitable problems emerge with specific rigs, I'll attempt fixes and send the updates along for your additional testing. 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

Study Program - Extra Question Pool Updated & WXWarn Reminder
Hi All, My son Brad, KB3MNE, upgraded to General yesterday! That gave me the motivation to take a break from the C# rewrite (I've been deep in developing the rig interface code for weeks now) and update the Extra question pool for the new questions that just went into effect in July. The Amateur Exam Study Program has all the complete pools for all three license classes, is easy and fun to use and completely free. If you know anyone thinking about joining our great hobby or wanting to upgrade, please encourage them to download the Amateur Exam Study Program software. You'll find the updated question pools, as well as the program on the Amateur Exam Study Program link at www.n3fjp.com. And just a reminder, especially with the threat of severe weather across a significant part of the country this afternoon, if you haven't yet tried my free WXWarn software, please download a copy and see what you think. WXWarn is easy to use, free weather software that will monitor National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts, etc., and alert you (audio and visually) as new ones are issued. Monitor the whole US, just your state, county or county list. You can also monitor and screen for specific alerts. WXWarn will also display up to 12, real time weather graphics that you can configure for content and size! This software is designed to download and parse weather data published by the NWS. Put WXWarn in your Windows Startup folder. As long as you have an Internet connection you will always be monitoring for weather events whenever they unfold. The weather data that WXWarn displays is based on criteria that you can select. Pleasant audio alerts are provided that will tell you the location and nature of each report. You'll find the WXWarn software at www.wxspots.com. Enjoy! 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com http://www.wxspots.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.

New Versions of ARRL 160 & Ohio QSO Party Log Now Available!
Hi All, ARRL 160 Meter Contest Log 2.6 is now available! I've already completed upgrading the Field Day and November Sweepstakes software for the new Ontario sections (ONN, ONE, ONS and GTA) and I've now incorporated the new sections into the ARRL 160 contest log as well. Since the ARRL has added these new sections, you will definitely need all these upgrades before the next contests. Ohio QSO Party Log 2.0 is Now Available! The OHQP folks have added one DX multiplier for phone and one for CW for this year's contest. I've updated the software to properly reflect your current score under this new rule. Both these upgrades are now on the website at www.n3fjp.com. State QSO Parties - what rule changes have I missed? If you've been following along, you know that for a few years, while trying to keep up with my "real" job, family and supporting the major contests, there simply wasn't enough time to keep up with some of the rule changes of the of the state QSO parties. Now that my real job is software, I'm still much busier than I ever imagined (many of you who have take retirement warned me and were you ever right!), but in addition to learning C#, working on the C# rewrite, supporting my software and of course keeping up with the rule changes of all the major contests, I'd like to get any state QSO party software updated for rule changes that I may have missed along the way, provided the coding time for the change isn't too extensive. I can't promise, but please let me know of any changes that may be required and I'll see what I can do. And if you haven't been to www.wxspots.com latetly.... I've reworked the www.wxspots.com website. Click the Severe Weather Now link at the top for an instant overview of severe weather in the US. Of course, if you want National Weather Service alerts and images for your specific area, please be sure to download WXWarn while you are there. Whether you are into emergency preparedness, a weather enthusiast or you just want alerts and real time images for your home and family, I think you will really like WXWarn! Please send us an e-mail directly (snkdavis@...) and we'll let you know your balance. Field Day Contest 3.0 and Field Day Network 2.7 Are Now Available!
Hi All, Happy Independence Day! Field Day Contest Log 3.0 and Field Day Network Log 2.7 Are Now Available! Even though Field Day is the farthest away, I have already had more e-mail from folks wanting me to upgrading the Field Day software for the new Ontario sections (ONN, ONE, ONS and GTA) than any of the others, so I have gone ahead and added them to the Field Day software. While I was at it, I fixed the post contest mode time entry problem on the network version and added Sat mode and the F designator option to the Summary forms. I checked with ARRL on a map defining the Ontario sections, but there isn't one available yet, so the map currently shows all of Ontario worked if you work any of the four sections. You will need to use this upgrade for next Field Day. By the way, I have a lot of users who aren't on my Announcements lists and may not be aware of the need to use these new versions next year, so if you could spread the word I would really appreciate it. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. More Callsign Graphic Samples on the website! There has been quite a bit of interest in Brad's callsign graphic services! I've added a few more samples on the website here: http://www.n3fjp.com/callgraphics.htm More recently, Brad has developed some animated versions and I hope to add a sample of that soon! If you have any graphics needs, please let us know! Graphics can be used for QSL cards, PC desktops, screen savers, website banners, mugs, T-shirts and a variety of other applications. Brad's consultation is free! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... November Sweepstakes Log 4.7 Now Available! (You'll need this upgrade for the new ON sections!)
Hi All, November Sweepstake Log 4.7 is now available! I've upgraded version 4.7 to accommodate the new Ontario sections and upgraded the Cabrillo output to 3.0 (Cabrillo 2.0 is still being accepted). With the new sections going into effect in September, you will definitely need this version for this fall's contest. As always, upgrades are free to registered users. You can download the latest from www.n3fjp.com. I will be adding the additional sections to my other major contesting programs as well (including my Field Day software (folks are already asking!)). I will let you know as soon as each upgrade is ready. For those of you who loved Field Day but have never parlayed that fun into other contests, November Sweepstakes is a great one to try at your own station this fall. It is really exciting, trying to find and work all the sections for a Clean Sweep! Whether you like to crank out as many QSOs as quickly as possible, or you want to relax, take your time and just focus on working all the sections, November Sweepstakes is a great opportunity for a lot of Amateur Radio fun! I really encourage you to try Sweepstakes if you haven't already! And speaking of Field Day, it was great to work so many of you during the contest last week! I had a blast and I really appreciate your friendly hellos! And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Field Day Network Tips
Hi All, Happy Fathers Day! Since we are getting swamped with the typical pre Field Day questions, I thought I would send along the most common helpful tips. Hopefully, you have already tested out all your PCs and network. With the additional security in later Windows operating systems, it is more important than ever to make sure that you have your drives / directories properly shared so that all the PCs can access the data file. This is quick and easy in a relaxed setting, but can seem insurmountable moments before Field Day when you are seeing errors and the clock is ticking. Relax and have fun on Field Day by making sure your software and network are ready to go well in advance! - First, the new Ontario sections do not go into effect until September 1, 2012. We will still use ON for this year's event. I will upgrade the software to include the new sections for next year's Field Day. Of course, I will be adding the new sections as needed to the rest of my software as well. - For the messaging features to work properly, the path to the log file from the computer hosting the log should NOT route through the network. The client's path must route through the network and begin with \\ (the \\ tells the software that it is a client and which PC to connect to as the server). For example, the server's path might be: C:\FD\FDLog.mdb and each of the client's paths would be: \\Develop\C\FD\FDLog.mdb (assuming the PC hosting the file is Develop). - The messaging features and band status of other PCs is communicated on port 1000 (the host uses the range of 1000 to 1000 + number of clients connected). Make sure your Virus / Internet Protection software is allowing the Field Day software permission to communicate. - Because some versions of Windows can be particular about accessing files in the c:\program files directory via the network, it is best to create a separate directory outside of program files on the PC hosting the log file such as c:\FD. - Make sure that all PCs and your router or hub are on a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)! If your PC or router loses power when your generator runs out of gas you are tempting fate! - A backup of all your data is written to every PC connected to the log file every 15 minutes. Even if the PC hosting the log file has a catastrophic failure, you can recover your log from any other PC on the network by clicking File > Combine or Restore from Backup. - Network Setup - we are continuing to receive tons of questions along the lines of : "I have (list of PCs / List of Operating Systems) that I'm trying to connect by (list of networking hardware) to set up as a LAN for Field Day. Can you help me set up my LAN?" I'd love to be able to help with that but my knowledge is geared to programming, not networking and I'm by no means an expert there. That said, it is generally very easy to set up a network and enable sharing. My networking software has been used successfully for years on a variety of Windows operating systems (I'm not aware of any combination that will not work from Win 95 on up), but I simply don't have the resources it would require to support all the network setup questions coming my way right now in addition to all the software support questions. In a nutshell, all you have to do is: - Set up your network (you can Google "Set up home network" for all the information you need to get you going) - Put the FDlog.mdb file in a folder that is accessible to all the PCs on the network - Make sure the Field Day software is pointing to the correct log file from the Setup form. - Make sure that your Internet / Virus Protection software is allowing the program to communicate. Finally, those interested in a Call Sign graphic for their club (or individually) before Field Day, there is still time, but Brad will need your information in the next day or two. Please see: http://www.n3fjp.com/callgraphics.htm for details. And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... Package Upgrade Information If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package or N3FJP's Software Package and CD for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. 7QP Contest Log 1.0 and WXWarn 1.8 Now Available!
Hi All, I have two quick announcements... The 7QP Contest Log 1.0 is now available! Just in time for the contest on May 5th, I have added a new program - the 7QP contest log - to my N3FJP software package! You'll find the program on the State QSO party page at www.n3fjp.com. As always, additional programs added to my software package are free to N3FJP Software Package users! Just enter the password we sent you for the State QSO Party programs when you registered your package and you will be all set. If you aren't already a package user and would like to upgrade, please see the Package Upgrade section below. WXWarn 1.8 is now available! I wanted larger graphic displays on WXWarn. I was having a terrible time narrowing down and deciding which images I wanted in the first 8 slots, so that I could display two rows of four larger graphics. I finally decided to dig into the code and add two more display options. You can now select two rows of 5, for ten larger images or 3 rows of 4, for twelve larger images! You can download the latest from the WXWarn page at http://www.wxspots.com/wxwarn.htm Package Upgrade Information If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package or N3FJP's Software Package and CD for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. N3FJP Software Announcements!
Hi All, I have several announcements that I would like to share with you... All of N3FJP Software Contesting Programs are Updated for the Common Country File Location! If you have been following along, you know that one of the features included in my most recent release of Amateur Contact Log (AC Log version 3.2) is that Jim, AD1C's country files can now be downloaded right from AC Log's file menu options. The latest versions of my contesting software will check the same file download location first as well, so instead of having to download the country files to the directory of each program, you only have to download them once (and it is a snap if you use AC Log 3.2 to do it)! Of course, you can still download the files directly from Jim's page if you like. Just follow the directions from Jim's page here: http://www.country-files.com/n3fjp/index.htm In case you are wondering which contesting versions have this feature, in addition to the current version list on my Register Now page, the current versions of the contesting software that support this new feature are all listed on Jim's site as well. Speaking of the country lists, Jim is doing a tremendous service for the Amateur Radio community maintaining the country files. It is a really big job and if you appreciate Jim's efforts, please use the Donate button on Jim's page to send him a thanks for all of his efforts! WXWarn 1.7 is Now Available! New Features in WXWarn version 1.7 include: - Display of up to 12 weather images on the main form in various sizes. Click Settings > Image URLs & Settings to configure to your taste. You can enter any images you like, including those from your local area! - The font size is user customizable - The NOAA discussions form can remain on top and be placed wherever you like - The discussions form can be accessed directly from the main form If you are not familiar with WXWarn, this software runs on your PC, constantly monitoring NWS updates for Warnings, Watches, Tornadoes, Severe Thunderstorms, Forecasts, etc., and alerts you whenever new information is issued. You can monitor the entire US, your local state or just your county. You can also screen for specific alerts if you like. WXWarn can be set to run minimized on startup, so put WXWarn in your Windows Startup folder and you will always be monitoring for the latest weather developments as they unfold, whenever your PC is running! WXWarn is completely free and fully functional for permanent use with a small banner ad, or you can register it for only $7 to remove the banner ad, free up screen space and encourage my continued development of the software. Please give WXWarn a try! You can download it from here: http://www.wxspots.com/wxwarn.htm Details on Customizing Your Splash Screen! In addition to AC Log 3.2, with the exception of the state QSO party software, all my programs will now display any splash screen that you like on startup! Since I first mentioned this new feature in reference to AC Log, there has been a lot of interest and questions from users. My son Brad, KB3MNE, will happily render a 3D image for you in 3DS Max (details here: http://www.n3fjp.com/callgraphics.htm), but some folks would like to create their own. If you would like to give it a try on your own, here are the steps: 1. Create an image that is 1000 X 563. 2. From AC Log 3.2's menu options click File > Show File Locations. Note the N3FJP Shared Settings Files location. 3. Save your image in that folder as splash.jpg. That's all there is to it. When you start AC Log, your splash screen will display! The Many Faces of AC Log... As long time users of AC Log know, the program has always been highly user customizable and never more so than now! "Out of the box", without DX spotting set up, Amateur Contact Log may look a little flat to new users. I would really like to give folks an idea of the customization possibilities. In addition, the customizations that you have come up with may spark ideas for long term users as well! I've set up an album on this Announcements Group where you can upload your screen shots. If you have customized AC Log and like the results, I would really appreciate it if you would upload a screen shot to this photo album: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/N3FJP_Software/photos/album/1603732640/pic/list I hope to select some of the screen shots as examples to display on my website to help new and prospective users understand AC Log's possibilities. Feel free to browse through the album to generate ideas for your own customization! Uploading screen shots is easy: - Just bring up AC Log - Press Alt & Print Screen - Start Microsoft Paint - Click Edit Paste (you should now see a picture of AC Log). - Click File > Save (you may want to select .jpg) - Upload the file you saved to the directory above. Thanks in advance! I am eager to see how you have configured your AC Log! Package Upgrade Information If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package or N3FJP's Software Package and CD for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. Thanks! As always, thanks for your kind words, support, linking to our website and spreading the word about our software. Amateur Contact Log 3.2 Now Available & KB3MNE's Call Sign Graphic Services!
Hi All, Here are the latest N3FJP Software Announcements! Amateur Contact Log 3.2 is Now Available! Ever since I've released Amateur Contact Log 3.1, I've had lots of great feedback with one recurring theme - the new text and display enhancements are great! Now, if I could only make the DX List bigger, this would be about perfect! So, I've been working on that feature the last few days! You can now specify the percentage of the screen that the DX Spotting window uses, as well as its font size and color. The DX List size has been 10% up until now, but you can enter any percentage you like by clicking Settings > Appearance DX Spotting List Size. Change the font by clicking Settings > Appearance DX Spotting List Font and the color by clicking Settings > Appearance > Color. In addition, I have simplified the downloading of Jim, AD1C's latest country files. From AC Log's menu options click File > Download Country Files. This will download the country files to your N3FJP Software\Shared folder, which is where AC Log first checks for the latest country files. I am in the process of updating the contesting software to also first check in the shared directory for country files, so once that is complete, by using AC Log, (or manually downloading the country files to your shared directory), you will instantly update the country files for all programs. I will let you know when the contesting program updates are complete. I have also modified AC Log's eQSL upload sequence so that users have the opportunity to change their log in info before the upload occurs. This is important to folks with multiple call signs. Finally, you can display your own, 1000 X 568 splash screen graphic on the splash screen! Simply place a file named splash.jpg in the N3FJP Software\Shared directory in your Documents and Settings folder. More details on that in the next announcement below! Upgrading from version 3.1 to 3.2 is a snap! Just download the latest from www.n3fjp.com, let it install in its own default working directory and you will be all set! You'll find directions for upgrading from earlier versions on the website. KB3MNE's Graphic Services are Now Available! It is neat how one thing leads to another! Since I've updated my software with the new N3FJP splash screen, I've had a number of folks contact me about obtaining a similar, high quality, BMP or JPG image for their own call. More recently, we started getting requests from users, wishing to display their own call graphics on the AC Log splash screen. I have incorporated that feature into AC Log 3.2 and it will also be included in future versions of the contesting software as well! My son Brad, KB3MNE, actually created and rendered the image in 3DS Max, and it is an involved process. There is a lot more to it than entering new call letters for each request. It requires positioning, lighting adjustments for each call sign, etc., so there is significant time involved. Anyway, there has been enough interest that Brad has decided to hang out his shingle and provide the service of designing an image for you, for only $10! Here is how it works.... - E-mail me at snkdavis@... with your call sign, expressing your interest and I will forward your request to Brad. - Brad will prepare a small, sample image with a watermark and he will e-mail it to you for your approval. - If you are satisfied with the sample Brad e-mails you, you can purchase your full sized version here: http://www.n3fjp.com/callgraphics.htm Or by sending your payment to: G. Scott Davis 118 Glenwood Road Bel Air, MD 21014-5533 After we receive your payment, Brad will e-mail your full sized image (if you order by mail, be sure to include your e-mail address). Brad will also include a suitably sized image to display on your splash screen when you start AC Log 3.2. Brad will include specific instructions on where to save the image so that it displays on startup. The full sized image will be 1920 X 1080, which is much crisper than the sample above and can be used for QSL cards, PC desktops, screen savers, website banners, mugs, T-shirts and a variety of other applications. Other sizes, including even larger images, are available by request at no extra charge. You can also add your name or other short text to the graphic for the image that Brad creates for you! Alternative color schemes are available by request as well, just let us know what you have in mind! Brad will also create more complex graphics for you! Fees for more detailed graphics are based on time and complexity. Let Brad know what you are looking for and he will happily provide a free estimate. Questions on Upgrade Costs After the last announcement, I was surprised how many folks asked about the upgrade cost for AC Log. Upgrades for all my software are free to registered users! I also very much appreciate the second most often asked question, which was along the lines of: "I know your upgrades are free, but I also realize how much time and effort coding these enhancements take and that your pricing policy doesn't fully reflect that. Can I send you something to show my appreciation for your continued efforts?" Yes, your continued support in any amount is welcome and deeply appreciated! You can use this page: http://www.n3fjp.com/donate.htm or send your contribution by mail to my address above. Thank you so much for your continued support! Package Upgrade Information If you have registered one or more individual programs and would like to upgrade to N3FJP's Software Package or N3FJP's Software Package and CD for full use of all our Amateur Radio software, we would be glad to apply the amount that you have registered so far as a credit towards that purchase. Thanks! As always, thanks for your kind words, support and spreading the word about our software. Kimberly and I really appreciate it! 73, Scott & Kimberly N3FJP & KA3SEQ www.n3fjp.com

ACLog 3.1 - One More Minor Enhancement
Hi All, I've had lots of great reports on 3.1. The only thing a couple users have mentioned so far is that the text box font size wound up being a little too big on their displays. It looks fine on my monitors here, but to remedy that, I added a feature to change the text box fonts as well. I made the change early this week, so you may already have the latest version. You can tell by clicking Settings > Appearance > and if you have the option for Text Box Font, that is listed under Label Font, you already have latest version. If you don't and if you want the ability to change your text box font size, you can either replace the .exe file in your 3.1, program files working directory with this one: http://n3fjp.ky1v.com/ACLog.exe Or, if Windows fusses, just uninstall 3.1 from Windows Control Panel and then reinstall from www.n3fjp.com. You won't lose any settings by doing that. In fact, now that your settings are saved in the Documents and Settings folder, all settings and log data will be preserved without the need to transfer anything and upgrading to future versions will be a snap! Again, if this one feature is not important to you, there is no need to do anything. Just carry on with your 3.1 installation as it is now. By the way, regardless of what you decide about the Text box fonts, if you upgraded and your Label fonts are a little small, click Settings > Appearance Label Font to change your label fonts. I'm not going to call this 3.2, as that will lead to more confusion, just having released 3.1 and because it only has one tiny feature change. This is more of a patch for a very small group who need to be able to control their text box fonts. ACLog version 3.1 is currently the latest and greatest. 73, Scott N3FJP http://www.n3fjp.com Serving the Amateur Radio community with contesting and general logging software since 1997.
