Newport 16 Battens

Does anyone have the specifics for the sizes of the sail battens?

Hi, you could spend a lot of $ and buy fiberglass ones from a store. Or make your own.? I have lost a number of battens over the years on gusty days.? Sails stretch a bit over time, and if your batten pockets rely on an elastic inner sleeve tensioner, it will dry out and no longer provide the tension needed to keep them in the pocket. This will allow the batten to work there way loose to the point where a good gust will allow them to go bye-bye (a technical term). Trusting that every sailmaker sews each and every pocket to spec, might be naive considering where they are made.? It is best for you to measure the pockets? which need replacements battens.? Don't buy them!? Make them out of 1" X 1/4" (clear pine) trim lumber to fit perfectly and stay put.? All you need is a coping saw and some sandpaper to soften the edges and round off the ends.? You can fine tune each to fit snugly.? They will work fine and cost pennies on the dollar Vs. Fiberglass.? On huge sails you might need FG, but not on ours.? I sprayed a number of coats of red Krylon on mine.? Advantages are...they float, they are highly visible in the water if they do come out of the pocket, the spray paint leaves some "tooth" on the battens so they don't slip out of the pockets as easily.? My Butterfly (75 square foot sail) had very similar battens from the mfr.? The wood is easily shaped with a bit of 150 or 220 grit sand paper and smoothed with 400 grit to soften all of the edges prior to painting or sealing (if you want a natural finish on something that nobody sees).

One other thing... pockets may varie between, Award, Newport, Baymaster, Gloucester and Neptune.? It's impossible to find original batten lengths for each.? I do recall some variances.? My replacement main sale actually has four battens/pockets, so there's that.?

Wishing you fair winds and following seas.

Hey all,
?
I agree with J. Cimino.? 2 of my 3 sail battens are wood as described by J.? Works perfectly.? I used a table saw to rip a 1/4 inch strip from a 1" pine board.? Only thing I did in addition was to wrap the ends in white electrical tape to dress them up and make it harder for them to fall out of the batten pockets.
