Neptune 16 1985
开云体育I am a new owner of a Neptune 16, The boat is sound, but I had to redo the centerboard cable,? My question is how and where is the cable attached to the centerboard, and can access be gained from inside the boat. I need to check the pivot and the cable attachment. I am 72 and don’t have much assistance.? I know that I could CAREEN the boat if it was on the ground, but am reluctant to go that route if not necessary.? I am in Texas on the gulf coast near Freeport tx. ? ? Sent from for Windows ? |

I'm 71 and had to do the same. The cable is attached to the back side of the swing keel. The easiest way, I found was to slide the boat off the trailer into the grass. Then roll the boat onto it's side so that you can get the keel to swing out where you can work on it. After finishing, roll the trailer up to the boat and attach the winch cable to it. Tilt the trailer as high as possible and block it up so the boat can be winched onto it. When the boat is far enough on the trailer so it can balance let the trailer down and complete moving the boat forward. Spraying water on the slides makes moving the boat easier. ?Another way is if you can launch the boat into water, pull the boat into the shallowest you can. Then follow the procedures above.

Ron,

It's a lot of work. I serviced my Gloucester 16 swing keel and cable (similar boat) a few years ago using a drydock hoist and sling that?raised?the boat off the trailer. That's probably the easiest way to accomplish inspecting/servicing the cable or painting the keel if you have access.??

Second to that is elevating and blocking the stern a few inches higher than the trailer and pulling the trailer forward 6 ft to allow the keel enough fall to see the cable attachment. That's the best way to remove and change the keel pivot bolt. That's more work, and requires some homemade jack supports to hold and facilitate?guiding the keel back into place.? ?

I was a new owner 6 yrs ago and consider myself lucky because the boat had always been trailered and stored inside. That makes a huge condition difference, hopefully yours is in good shape. I understand being moored or docked is hard on swing?keels in general. Last year I replaced the winch- that's pretty easy to do except I'm not really flexible so getting under the winch support was a chore.

These keel boats are lots of fun to sail up on the beach and maneuver in shallow water, I love mine.? My advice is to take it to the shop and have them service it.? Put your mind at ease and enjoy sailing. -be safe
