Couplers

I’m contemplating buying some Fleischmann N scale equipment: a steam locomotive, A diesel, and several passenger cars. Fleischmann still uses Rapido couplers. ?Has anyone converted Fleischmann equipment from Rapido to microscale? How much of a process is it?

as a second question, are Kato cars/couplers and Micro-scale cars/couplers compatible? I’d like to Be able to make up a city of St. Louis or a Los Angeles Limited from the cars in my coach yard.
?
Thank you, all

John-

?

Micro-Trains couplers can be fit to just about any rolling stock.? The conversion can be as simple as using (if you can find it) the Micro-Trains T-Shank coupler in the Rapido draft gear.?

Even simpler is using a Fox Valley / Red Caboose / Precision Masters dummy coupler which just replaces the Rapido.? It won’t have the operational features of a M-T but then neither will the T-Shank coupler which is a loose fit and a compromise product to begin with given all the slop and variations in Rapido coupler mounts.

The current issue of N Scale Railroading has an article on coupler interchangability which has some information that might be useful even though I don’t agree with all the observations and conclusions the author comes to.? ?Short answer is that Kato couplers work fine with M-T.

Contact me off-list when you get the equipment, take pictures and maybe I can give you some guidance on how to convert the Fleisschmann stuff.

Randy,

I emailed the only person I know in the area that might have gone to th Nscale convention, but he couldn’t make it due to work. So, unless someone knows anyone else to ask, I have no clue when they’ll start sales.
