Bridgeport spares in the Uk
I have just acquired a 1979 Adcock & Shipley version? series 1 with variable speed head, mostly works apart from the brake, parts here in the UK appear to be 2 x the US prices, brake set here is ?85 + Vat + carriage, the US price is about half, has anyone any eperience of the cost of importing or even the chinese quality?

Mike, I'm in the US and have found that items that are mentioned "BP and clone compatible" from Asia usually are made to metric dimensions and do not directly fit a (US) BP. I assume that the Adcock & Shipley versions are also Imperial machines, so I'd be sure to ask the vendor if the parts are metric or Imperial dimensioned...

开云体育Thank you John Yes mine is imperial, or ‘footrick’ as I call it! Does anyone know if the Asian parts are any good? I need a set of brake shoes, and, having just had the Y leadscrew out, a new one of those as well of course as the nut at some time in the future, I managed to adjust the X axis nut up to about 0.005” backlash at the ends, but in reality I ought to change them both at the same time. I wonder if the ballscrews are cost effective? Best rgds Mike ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of comstock_friend ? Is the brake that important ?
My mill's old motor had an electric brake but repacement motor does not. I don't think I'm in a rush to stop the spindle ! My lathe is brakeless too. What do you want the brake for ? If it's for quick stops, you can actually do it electrically. My hedge trimmer uses the principle - basically disconnect the power from the motor then link all the motor wires together. I'm unsure if it works on 3 phase motors but apparently they don't run well on DC - to put it mildly ! |
Hi Mike,
Just joined the Group and noticed your question, though it is from a fair while ago. For what it is worth I have had some recent experience importing to Australia from the US. I have a Series 1 Adcock & Shipely Mill which has a BR2J2 variable speed head. I have been refurbishing the machine and have used a company in US called H&W Machine Repair and Rebuilding to source my parts. All parts received look of high quality though I haven't gone far with the rebuild and so the machine is not in use to judge long term quality. In terms of pricing H&W were very approachable when I had technical questions and of reasonable pricing. I did get a price for shipping from them and initially thought I would try elsewhere. They even suggested using a freight forwarder, which I eventually did. In the end, all parts were received through the freight forwarder, who had an option to charge costs associated with Australian customs duties and our Goods and Services Tax on imports. On reflection, though the freight forwarder allowed me to combine a number of shipments from various suppliers in the US, the eventual costs of shipping (when you apportion costs against weight and price of the Mill specific items) were similar to what H&W offered. I have no afliation with H&W just expressing my experience. Ian |
