SimpleP48 figure 8

Hi,

I've been a long -time lurker. I thought I would post up something I'm working on.?

I've been interested in getting a small, inexpensive Blumlein pair together for recording piano and thought I would try and see if the SimpleP48 works with two electret capsules, out of phase, on one xlr, with two sets of symmetrical capacitors and resistors.

It works!? I'm using PUI AUM-4537L-HD-R cardioids with 4.7uF caps and 87KOhms resistors. I'm going to try it out with PUI AUM 5241L next, which should be more suitable in terms of coping with the signal from a piano.

I should add, as my last post was a bit confusing, that the capsules are wired with capsule 1+? to pin 2 and capsule 2+? to pin 3,? which gives the right bias.

I assume this is what you did, but in case it's useful . As others have said on this board, it's important that the capsules be closely level matched to get a good null, and that's unlikely in practice unless you try lots and lots of capsules, so I also use a so I can get individual channels for balancing in the DAW later. But the combo version also works well enough for most of my uses.

Hi Casey,

Yes that's exactly what I did. I'm sure someone must have done it but couldn't find a reference anywhere. It's a very pleasing use of phantom power symmetry. I will match front facing capsules of each figure 8 and will use as Blumlein, so front to back differences shouldn't be too noticeable, I think?

I got interested puttining together a non-ribbon Blumlein mic through adapting Sony F99 cardioid stereo mics.? These are inexpensive and plentiful on ebay, have well made parts, but have a terrible realisation of stereo as the two capsules are quite narrow cardoids and are at 180 degrees.

They make a nice figure 8, when the capsules are joined, though. I did toy with using it as a multipattern mic, switched, almost as you show, but to one balanced signal, but the Sony F96 and F98 omni and cardiod mics of the same family are better all round. Easy to convert to balanced out as well.??
