Felted wool wind screens

Hello all,?
I thought I'd share my diy wind screens. They cost probably less than 50c each to make, are suitable for beginners to felting and do a fantastic job.?
For the basic shape I wet felted them - basically wetting the wool with very soapy water, shaping them around the mold (a housing for a sound sleuther mic i made covered in in foil), and agitating it until it roughly felted together. Let dry, rinse soap off and let dry again. Then I took it off the mold, used a felting needle to tidy it up and fill in the thinner patches. For the dead cat style screens I loosely felted long pieces of felting wool in piece by piece until it looked like a troll doll. Overall less than two hours work each. They don't shed much at all either. If you are frugal and hate plastics like me it's a very feasible option.

Lovely fir balls. JHR

Helena, that’s pretty sweet. I know nothing about felting but I’d like to give it a go.

This is great! One of my projects for 2024 is to do a wind screen/DeadCat instructable and really dive into both how to make these and the acoustic properties for how they work.?

Great work!

This was my first real felting project! It's very beginner friendly :)?

Those wind screens look great!? Slightly different topic, but what are the mic bodies themselves?? Repurposed connectors of some sort??

The bodies are from some 1/4 inch trs connector from AliExpress I had laying around. Perfect fit, and they're aluminium so they're light and shielded.?

Very nice, professional-looking work.? I'm collecting parts to build hydrophones, but after that I'm planning to make some Sound Sleuthers (too many projects).

Can I ask about your hydrophone plan? I might suggest looking into the metal marshmallow pro diy kit for an inexpensive, well buffered phantom powered piezo preamp if that's the direction you're going in.

I’m about to update both of my Hydrophone projects. More to follow ??

I've built several variants of the Alex Rice preamp, as well as a couple of Jules' very nice OPA design (and I'm looking forward to the mentioned updates).? I've seen the Metal Marshmallow products (and watched his demos), but I like building from scratch, or at least with a pre-designed PCB as a start.

For the piezos, I do have a couple of the STEMInc cylinders but when I tried to order more, the order failed.? I know they're sort of slowly shutting down their business.? I did find a possible alternate from China, but it isn't a direct replacement.? I'm also going to experiment with discs, but I don't expect much from those.
