AOMs-5024 in enclosures from China
Few days ago I completed the build of my first two AOM 5024 mics.
The build is simple, well documented (Tom's blog and Jules' instructable. BTW thanks to them I joined this great community). I trusted Jules and ommited shielding of the capsule. No hums, interferences - nice & quiet. But the enclosures... Could've made them myself but wanted a more elegant solution. It took me a while but eventually I've found dirt cheap enclosures on aliexpress. The dimensions given in the description are ridiculous, no mention of the inner diameter but creative comparative eyeballing convinced me to take the huge risk of ordering a couple for 50-60 cents apiece. Total with postage to Poland - ca $3,50. Here's the link: There's a choice of terminals: TRS or TRRS. Irrelevant - the cable is single shielded file, unsuitalke for our purposes - you will get rid of it anyway. Cable OD - 2 mm. I had a 4 mm one so I had to get rid of the rubber strain relief and get creative with shrink tubing. The front cover screws into the body and is relatively easy to unscrew with fingers. If it fights back - use a piece of rubber or a latex glove for better grip. There's a steel mesh just pushed in the cover. Prone to falling out. Lousy job, but for 50 cents, good enough. Inner diameter of the enclosure is 10 mm so AOMs, with their required insulation, fit nicely. The cover's ID is 8,5 mm so our capsule would be pushed inside and the distance from front of enclosure to the face of the capsule would be ca 3,5 mm. Fearing sound colouration I mounted mine flush with the edge. The clips are quite well made. The spring is strong. They can be removed (again springy holder).? Before soldering everything together it's good to make sure that the clips are put on the enclosures in opposite directions (for left and right microphone mounting on whatever you'll put them on).? That's interesting.
Do you have an account (with your address etc)? And have you logged in? Me being logged in, when I atempted? to "buy" [jetz kaufen] the mic from your link, I got proper delivery address no problem. They look the same ;) With the only difference of usb plug. Which is unimportant because you need to gut the enclosures anyway. Yes, mine are from aluminium. Pawel Yes, they are aluminium |
nice inexpensive solution.
which aom 5024 version is yours? I've got a pair of 5024 with naked metallic front side with some pinhole perforation on it. I know there is also aom 5024 with felt or foam-something covered front side. I do not know how they compare regarding their sound and frequency response and I wonder. |
I opted for the felt-covered version in the hope that they would be slightly better at rejecting dust etc in the field. Also, they were a few cents cheaper. I recall seeing SONY and other pro lavalier mics with the perforated front, so maybe this design favours voice pickup?
I doubt that my old ears would pick out any difference, but it would be interesting to hear back from any one who has detected a difference between the two versions, or can explain it. |
