tool offset 21
I am looking for a simple solution. I am using a 1/4" router bit to cut slots d shaped pockets and holes i would like to use a bigger cutter for various reasons. especially for testing i would like to do as little reprogramming as possible. i have read about cutter compensation but can not make sense of it. is there a way to apply a cutter compensation and switch to a 3/8" bit and make the same sized slots holes pockets etc. Do i need to turn compensation on and off for each arc of a circle, for example or can i just make a 3/8" bit behave like a 1/4"? there are no features with a minimum inside dimension of less than 3/8" -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. Mach4 Lathe Tool Offset confusion 3
Hi all, I’m just trying to set up a small modelmaker lathe with Mach4 and a Pokeys 57CNC board X and Z axis are running, homing works, Spindle is turning CW and CCW and so, I’m already quite happy. ? (Mach4 version is 4.2.0.4612, just for reference) Now, I’m a little confused about tool offsets: (using the ?Tool offsets in Mach4 Lathe“ document) The X offset DRO in Diagnostic screen is always showing ?0.000“, although there‘s tool and offset selected. Question: is this a bug or a feature? Have a nice Sunday, Konrad

X-Y Table 3
I am curious if anyone knows of a good XY table that I can connect my Mach 4 and CNC box to. The situation is, I've always wanted to get in to CNC. I got into the retrofit of a little machine shop mini lathe with CNC and Mach 4 in order to learn. I used the tech shops design by Ron Ginger and another gentleman's who's name I not recall. I also have a 13x40 geared head lathe and a Bridgeport Mill. And no more room in my small little hobby shop. I have some projects that require large numbers of like pieces and in a lot of cases the cnc'd mini late doesn't have the power or I do not have the tooling for it. There are many times I thought having a small XY table mounted on my 13x40 lathe powered by my CNC box and Mach 4 would be quite beneficial. It is also something I could transfer over to the bridgeport. At this point I just can't see doing a full CNC install on either the 13x40 lathe or the Bridgeport Mill. I have considered an electronic lead screw on the lathe but I suspect that needs ball screws and it would not transfer over to the Bridgeport. And at this point I'd like to keep the lathe capable of doing one of projects. That is what I do most of it appears. Sorry for the long-winded message. Dale Grice

mach4 21
There were suggestions in the past about upgrading to mach4. I thought mach3 was OK and why learn all new stuff? Well the reason is that mach4 is so much better, it is well worth the learning even for an old fart like me. It took me a day to get all the settings migrated to mach4 using ESS. I have been using mach4 for two partial days now and have not had a single hiccup or misfeed which were becoming more common in mach3. There are so many really cool features most of which I will never use but for accuracy stability and reliability I think mach3 can't come close to mach4. I wish someone had forced me to change years ago, i would have a lot more hair not pulled out in frustration with mach3. It is the intermittent undiagnosable behavior of mach 3 that was driving me nuts. And a big surprise for those who like printed documentation (have satellite internet which makes youtubes pretty much unusable) if you click the help button you can open the help folder with PDFs (and well written ones at that) on every topic you can imagine. I hadn't looked for help files because they are so rare anymore. Brian told me about the help folder. I was able to eliminate several of my customizations because mach4 does things so well that they are not needed. As one example, the MDI is a window that you can open instead of the gcode window and run your MDI stuff and then switch to the program run mode. No need to remember to hit escape to get out of the MDI and even crash the program if you hit the wrong keys while in MDI. Also you can set mach4 to pretty much ignore the keyboard. I am somewhat convinced that at least some of my problems with mach3 were caused by keyboard. The jogging is smooth and entirely predictable, no more broken cutters in setup. I was having x axis creep and could never find the reason why. Nothing sticking no wiring issues grounds right ESS not USB motion control. It just dithered around enough to be a problem. I don't know if it is that mach4 is smoother and has better acceleration control that my servo motors like better. Who cares, it just works and I am not smiling as Brian was hoping, I have an ear to ear grin. I think there is no risk in trying mach4. If it doesn't make you happy I bet they would give you a refund and I think the chance of not liking mach4 is about as low as it can be. I never say 0 but pretty darn (did I say darn?) close. -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. Garberville, CA 95542 Postal service only. Laytonville, CA 95454 UPS only. Upgrading 7
I just upgraded to R3.043.066 (from R2), I'm getting an error that says "radius at end of arc differs from radius to start, block =G02..." I downloaded the more recent R3 from Artsoft and the fix log shows nothing after R3.043.62. I can go back to R2 if need be, but I'm hoping I don't have to. This code runs under R2. Code generator was RhinoCAM 2017. I'm running under win XP SP 3 since my computers with an LPT1 port with not support anything higher. I'm seeing this error with every piece of code I have tested so far, all of which ran under R2 without issues. senior estop 4
i added some more protection to my router including having an overload on the spindle motor cause the axis motors to disable to prevent breaking a non moving cutter. carbide snaps off very nicely. however the biggest improvement is my senior citizen emergency necklace. i have several remote relays used in the shop for the compressor the vacuum and in the house for the piano bluetooth receiver and i have several that you can control from your cell phone. however for stopping the router that i hear from across the room might be doing bad things i wanted a single button and no confusion. i have the relay in series with the regular estop that connects to all motor circuits but leaves the ess and computer running. -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. couple of issues with mach4 ESS
when you boot mach4, the value in the increment field in the jog window does not necessarily have anything to do with what the selected step really is. running it up or down usually gets it right but on at least one occasion it didn't, had to reboot. also the move does not necessarily match the displayed increment exactly but it might be that it is in continuous mode even though it says incremental? i did not pay enough attention to this which only happened a couple of times to really know what was going on. i am sure about the increment not matching at startup. i mentioned this in a previous email but i have now proven that with mach4 and ESS there are moves that are combined when they are very separate events and i even tried faking it with dwells and with redundant moves. it seems that ESS is being too smart about efficiency of motion and smoothness. something is also creating the exact opposite effect. if i do the moves separately all is fine. if mach4/ESS does combine the move it not only does this when it shouldn't but it makes the motion choppy. i need to check but i am sure i have the same max speeds and accelerations and have tried the moves as G0 and G1 i thought something was wrong with my machine because i listen very carefully to all the noise (through hearing protection) and flinch and am ready to hit estop is something sounds a little different (not in a good way, it sounds sort of like grinding and nothing is grinding, i know that for a fact). i know for an absolute fact that the noise of moving x and y separately is quieter than doing both at the same time. -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. WIN-VISTA-10 Was RE: [MachCNC] mach4 16
I've changed the subject line so I can rant and everyone else can click on delete. SoapboxBode := TRUE; I've had a P: drive pointing to C:/Projects on my workstation for more than 20 years. I also use Schematic and PCB layout software Protel 99SE which was superseded by Altium. I've paid for support and upgrades up to Altium Designer 18 (2018). The best of the Altium series was Summer 09 which won't run on WIN-10. Protel 99SE, which does run on my WIN-10 HP ZBook laptop but has screen/touchpad issues for selecting connections, can also see the P: drive on the networked laptop. The Rev 18 Altium running on the HP ZBook with WIN-10 cannot see the P: drive. AlibreCAD/CAM on WIN-10 can see the P-Drive. Even my licenced copy of MACH3 which I've put on the WIN-10 system to check out G-Code before I head down to the shop with a USB drive can see for example: P:\CNC\Drawings\tensionerAssembly2_Setup 1.tap My Borland CodeWright 7.5 editor from 1991 which still runs on WIN-10 can access the P: Drive. The ZBook was purchased last fall to replace a failing WIN-7 laptop that running Altium 18 could access the P: drive. Haven't updated support for Altium for a few years. Don't even like Altium 18 and how they've changed it so I wouldn't buy it now anyway since the stand alone license I have is now $5790. I think the upgrade price they quoted me to go up to the latest version for one year support was $2790. WIN-10 was around in 2018. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to see the P: drive. Almost enough for me to consider Fusion-360 were it not that the cost for 4th axis CAM which doubles what I'm paying now for AlibreCAD and soon Mecsoft VisualCAM to replace the discontinued AlibreCAM. Microchip's MPLAB-8 which I use for my ELS project runs on WIN-10 and can see the P drive. The latest version of Embarcadero RAD Studio 10.4 (Delphi and C++) also no longer runs on WIN-10. Rev 10.3 does. Support for that runs out in June. Don't see any advantage to renewing support which is from the looks of their web page only $599 but wait there's more. It would require a copy of WIN-10 Pro on my workstation which is 11 years old so likely would need replacing. Although Office 2010 runs on WIN-10 it will probably break at some point so then there's a new copy of that. So the real cost isn't $599 but closer to $5K by the time I upgrade everything like I had to with WinZip for $39 to run on WIN-10. For what? I know! So I can have an "enhanced user experience" with my computers. And all those $ don't include the hours and hours required to upgrade stuff and remove the Microsoft viruses. Given the success I've had with LinuxCNC for the mill and both BeagleBone Black and Raspberry Pi projects Ubuntu is looking better and better. The down side is the lack of a good CAD package. I edited a screen to make it higher contrast. i do not remember if i tested everything after the mods. i also copied the xbox plugins to the plugin folder. now i can not configure anything, the whole configure drop down is grayed out. i know that the machine needs to be disabled to be able to config so that is not the problem. also even though other plugins show but are greyed out the xbox plugin does not show up in the list. also the gcode window shows but i can not get the mdi to show. i tried loading a screen that i had not edited and this has exactly the same problem. what could i have fucked up? -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. totally bizzar behavior 18
mach3 ESS i have been trying to get mach4 to work but it is just too confusing to me. i understand that the program is completely rewritten but why not adhere to some conventions of mach3 as to where to find and set stuff. i can make absolutely no progress with hotkeys and MDI does not work and motor tuning is totally wrong even though it shows correct values. motion when running a program is nuts i must have active highs and lows swapped but ???? has anyone written a tool for using a working mach 3 configuration to set up mach4 with ESS. now for the truly bizarre. i noticed this yesterday and immediately estopped but today i decided to let it run and see what happened. i am running a program that calls a sub many times more than i would ever use it with a tool change to allow for parts change. when i started after a tool change the motors went through a totally bizarre song and dance. could not recognize the tune. i was sure it would crash but it just undid the strange movement and then acted as if nothing happened. anyone ever experience this? and one more request. i have 3800 parts to make and am getting tired of the occasional hiccups with mach3 and really did want to migrate to mach4 but i just can't seem to do it. i am taking heavy drugs for stage 4 prostate cancer and i know my mind is fogged. programming that i could do in my sleep is a serious challenge, i get confused really easily. i also ideally want to get the machine working well enough that i can train someone else to use it when i die which could be soon. I also think that if i get everything ready for others to take over i will live forever :) Seriously at this point my case is eluding the doctors and it might be possible for me to live another 10 years but if i suddenly get too sick to work it will be too late to set this stuff up for others to use. I REALLY NEED SOMEONE WHO CAN SET UP MACH4 FOR ME. I am sure the company i work for (owned by my sister) will pay a fair rate for help. -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. mach 4 and How complex 4
Hi, This is truly the first time I have ever seen this be something that was an issue. I will check with the support guys and make sure they have not seen this as well. Now as far as making a new interface for setting up the motor that can be done! Lua has all the power to make this happen. We have OEM's that make simple scripts to setup the motor / IO and other settings. I truly don't know what to do in this new "modern age" The amount of things people expect out of the software is getting a little foreign to me . 3D printers have done a wonderful job of getting people into manufacturing. BUT at the same time it has made a bunch of users that think CNC should be that simple. We are working to try to make things simpler everyday and at the same time support the "power users" . I think we are quickly getting to the point that we have no middle ground. So we are working in VERY simple screens and wizards to guide the user to do simple operations and setup. The issue is I think as the people learn more they will want to get deeper into the machine and will want to make the machine do more complex things. Sorry for my rant :) But I am seeing this issue and trying to figure out what we should do to help people. Thanks Brian

help with customizations ? 29
I have been using mach3 for many years. i am recently having strange behavior occasionally and breaking tools. just goes wacky now and then so i have to keep my hand on estop all the time and can not leave the machine. there are no problems mechanical or electrical that i can find. i am using a smooth stepper. questions, will smooth stepper ethernet work fine with mach 4 windows 10? i wrote custom screens and macros and i understand these will have to be rewritten for mach 4. i don't have the patience to learn all this new stuff. i am currently taking strong drugs for chemotherapy and am more foggy than usual. is there anyone i can hire to duplicate my custom screens for mach4 and also the macros? i can try mach4 and maybe i don't really needs this but i am trying to figure out my options i have a job of 4000 parts to make as soon as possible and would prefer to not have to baby the machine the whole time. -- Best regards, Spencer Chase 67550 Bell Springs Rd. mach3 jogging issue
I think I am too old to switch to Mach4. What i am mainly trying to do is to get the router working so well that others can use it without breaking expensive bits or worse. I will get a better idea on my prognosis in maybe a week and by then should have enough experience with the changes i have made and whether i really need to switch to make the machine more reliable. I changed the kernal speed as suggested and looked for sticky keys which was off. but the main thing I did was to change to continuous jogging mode. I hadn't realized that in continuous you can access incremental and high speed continuous override with shift and control so i can set a really slow jog speed and switch to incremental very small step and if i know everything is clear take my chances with high speed continuous. i also changed the way i set the machine at home which for most of my programs is x0 y0 z0 a0 i was using a block clamped in the stock holder and setting references on the sides of the block this meant i needed to jog around the block to get to the x and y setting sides that is when i broke cutters when the axis moved with no keys pressed. now i am referencing a drilled hole in the top of the block and at z0 so i don't have to risk destroying the cutter. when the spindle is running the out of control cutter can do damage but there is usually time to estop and i am now running with hand on estop all the time. when setting up the spindle was not running so instead of just destroying a wooden block it snapped the cutter before i could hit estop. real fun to watch a $20 plus dollar cutter you just put in new get slowly broken off. if i really do need to change to Mach4 is there anyone i could hire to modify screens add macros and other stuff working from my xml files and screens?
