Guide Rods
I am buying some guide rods for my router table today and need to
know if they can be Mild steel or do they have to be hard chromed? I will be useing the VXB linear bearings on a 5/8" rod and I have the mild steel rods redily available so I want to use them instead of the hard chromed rod but I just dont know how this will affect the outcome of the quality and usability. Thanks for your input Jason |
Hi Jason
I think if you went to DIY-CNC forum you would have your question better answered there...That's just the right place. In this forum everyone has their hands full with Mach2 development. Not many are thinking about guide rods right now.... -- In mach1mach2cnc@..., "jasonjet25" <jasonjet25@e...> wrote: I am buying some guide rods for my router table today and need toI will be useing the VXB linear bearings on a 5/8" rod and I have thethe hard chromed rod but I just dont know how this will affect the |

If the weight is not too heavy I woudln't think it would matter. The important thing is you have mild steel available to you, in this game the rule tends to be "If it works..great..". I have only used polished steel myself, but have never seen any damage from it on a 200lb gantry.. Art www.artofcnc.ca ----- Original Message -----

Jason,
They need to be hardened... Chrome or not is up to you<G> Even a solft mild steel with a chrome finish (plating) will not work. The rods will dent and deform almost from the first go, and any vibration will make "dents" which will cause the bewrings to stutter and fault. A long time ago I picked up what I thought were hardened AND chromed rods, from a surplus place. They were from printers. I bought a bunch of expensive linear bearings like the ones you've selected... That's how I know this stuff I'm typing<G> Generally Thomson rails set the "standard" witht heir "case 60" shaft line. But others like Hiwin and INA may be cheaper. Sorry for the bad news, bur if you're gonna use tose bearings, bute the bullet and buy some hardened shafting... One other possibility--that I DON'T have direct experience with (yet<G>)-- is hydraulic cylinder shafting. It meets most of the hardness and straightness needs, and I've been told it's less expensive than case60 style shaft. BUT... It's only available in one inch and larger diameters. Hope this helps, Ballendo P.S. I even thought I'd go ahead and allow the grooves to develop in the chromed, soft shaft; thinking that it would "settle" once the wear indents area balanced/matched the load... Succintly put, that was a bad idea<G> --- In mach1mach2cnc@..., "jasonjet25" <jasonjet25@e...> wrote: I am buying some guide rods for my router table today and need tothe hard chromed rod but I just dont know how this will affect the |

Jason,
I am using hydraulic cylinder rod shafting (brother in law works for a cylinder mfg :)price was right!), however I don't have enough hours on the machine to determine any type of wear rate, but it sure runs smooth. One problem that I have found is the tolorance from different manufactures of guide bearings. Soe are made to fit with the tolerance under size on the bearing and some with the tol. over on the shaft. Nook ceramic bearings will not work nice on Pacific ceramic shafting. And Art, My 6 month project of a 12 foot x12 foot beam [gantry] saw is nearing completion. Will be sending another $$$ soon. Arthur P.
