Using mini router to talk with Gemini thru wifi

Hi folks
?
I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. A member of the local club has kindly been round and helped set up my new mount. We didn't realize until yesterday that my "netbook", an Asus did not have an ethernet socket. So it's wifi only. Luckily, he had his laptop and worked on inputting stuff to Gemini.
It wasn't until just before he left, I remembered I had a mini router - one that came with an Asiair (from Cloudy Nights) and not used yet.
A GL-AR750S-EXT.
I have managed to attach to the Gemini, log into this and thought that all I had to do was input the IP address (into my browser) now on the Gemini, obtained from the HC and I would be fine.
It doesn't work. I am looking at videos etc - but talk of gateways and the like do confuse me. So, I am not experienced in such matters.
Perhaps if I right click on my wifi icon in Network on my Win 11 netbook - copy the info from Gemini into that (IP address, gateway etc), it will work?
Anyway - I'm sure my new mate from the club will assist but might take a week to get out here again and I need to research what I can.
So, any advice or links appreciated. I have seen something from Losmandy but not quite what I need, I think.
Obliged.
ps I took the Gemini and router outside and attached to the scope. It's only on a deck a few yards away, powered up but that part works fine.

Hi Dave,
?
What are the network settings (IP address, default gateway, subnet mask, DHCP setting?) - please share settings for both, your Gemini and your PC.
?
Once properly configured, just entering in a browser should let you access Gemini web pages.
?
Regards,
?

I think I show:
Win 11
IP - 192 168 0 89
Subnet Mask - 255 255 255 0
Default Gateway - 192 168 0 1
DHCP - 192 168 0 1
?
From the hand controller of the Gemini:
IP - 192 168 1 110
Netmask - 255 255 255 0
Default Gateway - 192 168 1 101?
Primary DNS Server 8 8 8 8
Hope that helps
Dave

Hi Dave, it looks like your Gemini and PC are on different subnets (one on 192.168.0.x the other on 192.168.1.x). You could try to change Gemini to be on the same subnet (192.168.0.110 for example) or change the subnet mask to allow both subnets to be routed.

Thanks Paul
?
I changed the Gemini to 192 168 0 110 but didn't do better. I could no longer log into the router. It was like that when Windows decided to tell me it had updates - so I am installing them and will look later.
Will look on youtube as well on another machine.

When you say "I could no longer log into the router", what do you mean? Changing Gemini IP address shouldn't affect your access to the router.

Good point. I'll check again. May have messed up somewhere. I know the netbook tried all the while to revert to my regular wifi.
May have been that and I didn't notice it.

I am certainly on the mini router's wifi.
I input 192.168.8.1 which is the IP of the router printed underneath. I did input the passphrase yesterday and it worked, but today I get a timed-out error.
I have returned the Gemini IP to it's original IP just for tidiness.
I see that that Microsoft Edge looks for 192.168.8.1/# WLAN (or something similar). I did not type that in yesterday - but whether I type in or not today - I get a timed-out error.
I am also on the 5g network of the router. All lights work - and I do see activity on the 5g light.
?

That’s a different subnet than what you posted earlier (x.x.8.1 vs x.x.0.1). Is this intentional?

The router's IP (is that the same as subnet?) is 192.168.8.1 That is what is printed underneath with the password.
I have not posted the router's IP before - just my win 11 machine and gemini.

If the routers IP is 192.168.8.1 then both the laptop and the Gemini should have 192.168.8.1 as the gateway. That will be easiest.?

Think of the “gateway” as where each part of the network looks to find the router… it is vastly oversimplified but gets the point across. If a network member has the wrong gateway it will have a hard time finding/connecting to the router.?

As Ryan pointed out, with your subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, all three devices should be on the same subnet. The first three numbers in the IP address should be the same for all three, and only the last number should vary.
?

Thanks all.
Well - I can log into the router now? - but have not made any changes, except changing some properties - see below.
So just to be clear:
On the HC I would change Default Gateway to 192.168.8.1 but leave the IP as is? Which is the same?
On the Win 11 machine - I note on properties it states to obtain an IP address automatically but 192.168.8.1. is greyed out on the Use the following IP address etc
So do I put anything else there?
It's easy to get in a mess.

Router IP - 192.168.8.1
Win 11 - IP 192.168.8.4
Handset? - IP - 192.168.8.2
?
Default Gateway on HC+Win 11- 192.168.8.1
Subnet on HC + Win 11 - 255 255 255 0
?
I can log into the router - I don't think I need to make any changes though.
It might be a separate issue now.
I am sure this morning has seen an improvement - I now open the driver for gemini - and when I click on setup I get a comms error.

Now you'll need to configure Gemini.NET ASCOM driver with the correct IP address for Gemini (192.168.8.2). Start the driver and bring up the virtual HC, select Setup->Configure Telescope menu. Next to Com Port, click on the drop down, and select "Ethernet" (do this even if it's already selected). Make sure the IP address is correct for Gemini 2 and press OK:

Thanks all for the help.
?
I still can't log into the Gemini web server.
I note under Properties there in no DNS server shown. In the HC I have 8 8 8 8. No idea if that is the cause of it or not.
I still get an error on trying to Connect the Acom Driver.
As previously stated - these are the inputs I've ended up with'
?
?
Router IP - 192.168.8.1
Win 11 - IP 192.168.8.4
Handset? - IP - 192.168.8.2
?
Default Gateway on HC+Win 11- 192.168.8.1
Subnet on HC + Win 11 - 255 255 255 0
?
When I type in I receive an error - DNS Probe Started

Dave,
?
Use //192.168.8.2 for the address (the Gemini-2 IP).
?
Or edit your \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file to include the "gemini" netbios definition within the PC for Gemini-2.? Search on the WWW with "hosts file" for ways to edit this file.

Thanks Wayback.
The // in front of the IP didn't work. And although I do have internet (I accessed Yahoo Mail) when I try other pages I get timed out again.
I realize Windows may not be the problem - but every now and then I swear I'm going to Mac. My Win 11 desktop has started randomly freezing, and the Netbook I was working on earlier for this was not recharging - despite being plugged in. So I'll carry on tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice.

Dave,

One of the wonderful things about owning a Losmandy mount is that you apply, or learn to apply, all kinds of knowledge.? Ethernet by itself is fun.? And the internet has numerous guides on using and setting up Ethernet to review.? Or use local knowledge and these days with "FaceTime" this really helps with a friend.
?
Given something new, if you have a Travel Router and place it at the mount with a connection to Gemini-2, when powered up the Gemini-2 exists on a small private LAN (Local Area Network).? (Assuming the router is programed in the default manner.)? This private LAN with one connection has no internet or WWW (World Wide Web) access.?
?
Later when you use your PC to connect by Wi-Fi to the travel router, two connections exist on this small local LAN.?
Again, with no access to the WWW (internet), because the PC disconnected from the Home LAN (Wi-Fi) to connect to the Travel Router.? So, if at this point you see your WWW mail server available then you know you cannot be on that small Travel Router LAN.? (Either that or our assumptions about the travel routers access do not apply.)? Now the tips Paul provided all assume you did connect to the travel router.? And that you mainly wish to control the mount.? (Controlling the mount does not exclude WWW access but it does not require this.)
?
You will need to connect to the travel router, just be aware that the name you need to connect comes and goes as you power on and off the travel router.? The lights will wink on the Travel Router as you do attach to this small private LAN.? Once connected the PC cannot see the WWW.? And with Paul's tips, you will be able to talk to the mount and control it.? All steps in a learning curve.
?
-------------------------
?
Typically, on your home network the PC Wi-Fi uses DHCP (Domain Host Config Protocall) which fills in the LAN information on connection with the PC.? I'd suggest you want that set within the PC Wi-Fi section for this kind of configuration.? ?The Travel Server will do the same for the PC.? That way you can move between the two Wi-Fi services without adjustments to the PC.? Not the kind of thing to deal with when things get dark.
?
After getting your Travel Router connection working, I'd suggest you obtain a "USB Ethernet dongle" (for your PC style).? Which allows connecting an Ethernet cable to a Laptop.? It's a type of port extension.? A direct connection removes layers of confusion when trouble shooting.? ?And provides another simple connection option.?
?
Read the instructions on the travel router or get the instructions available on the WWW.? I have a similar travel router that use the device as a member of my Home Wi-Fi in a Bridge.? ?Read up on Ethernet, it's a lot of fun to make the network function as desired.
