USB 3, You were right Michael....
Sonny Edmonds
...I think it IS faster.
Even though everything I'm running at the mount is USB 2 (Cameras, focuser, Gemini II), my Star Tech powered hub is a USB 3 type. Michael suggested using USB 3 type cabling to my baby Dell mount-side computer. I really wondered if I could speed up things, but I tried it with what USB 3 cabling I have on hand. So impressed am I I went looking for a longer USB 3 cable to make a permanent change for the better. Best I could do was a USB 3 Female to Male, 10' long, and employed it into my harness. 13' total now. But there was definitely a noticeable speed improvement in data movement. Faster operation of the USB 2 devices. Thanks Michael for the push in the right direction! -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
You are most welcome. The benefit of this group is to share the improvements we find by the many experiments we all try.? ?Glad you like the USB 3 as much as I do.?? One other note on that. There are two common forms of USB3 connector: One is a thick one (USB 3.0B) ...link below shows it.? One is a very thin one (USB3 B micro) I find the thin micro version easy to break, as our cables see a lot of flex during the mount slewing and tracking.? The thick version lasts much better for me.? ?I'd avoid getting any micro type.? Note that ZWO ASI cameras use the thick version to connect to their cameras...also provided a more reliable connection.? All the best, Michael Here is a link to the thick type: On Fri, Jul 10, 2020, 10:46 AM Sonny Edmonds <sonnyedmonds@...> wrote: ...I think it IS faster. |

Oh, yeah, no micro here.
But more importantly, I'm all about looming my wiring for stress relief and security. I use a product called Spiral Wrap to bundle the wires in a nice secure "cord".? This new USB 3 cable I got to extend my OEM cable . Probably at least 1.5X the USB 2 it replaces. But I'm just going on the changes in performance between the mount/telescope, and the Baby Dell. It's a zippy, zippy kinda thing. And the WiFi performance seems to have stepped up as well by going USB 3.0 from the computer to the mount. The USB 2 wires from the cameras and focuser are 18". But I'd bet the 15' USB 2 trunk line was a bottleneck. It was great advice that has shown a marked improvement. Thanks Michael! I wanted to give credit where credit is due. -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
