David is spot on.
AVOX also produced the PCBs (G1/2s) their relationship goes way back.? Not sure who designed the 492 DD.? It just just has HGM StarTrack on it.
As for the future, the code (Rene's side) is under constant change & improvements.?? I'm sure there are commercial agreements between Losmandy and Rene.?? They have been doing this for almost 2 decades plus.
It would be good to see improvement changes to the mounts.? A complete re-design of the worm system with indexing.? As said this would probably not be backwards compatible.?? Any changes in hardware would need long term off the shelf parts support.?? Lets take the DIN sockets/Cables.? Common years back.....not so much these days (in fact almost impossible to find G1 DIN sockets).?? Yet by staying with them (DIN sockets) they made Gemini systems and motor changes forward and backwards compatible.???? This is a big plus for owners and buyers.?? Just recently read in these forums of a 1992 mount still in use now using a Gemini 2.?? That is part of the attractiveness of their products to many.
I think given the state of "the great electronics parts drought", doing major changes is not going to happen (unless parts supply can be guaranteed).? ATM lead times over 2 years for parts!?? That's not guaranteed either.?
My guess they trial lots of design changes .....most don't make it to market.? The biggest driver is cost.?? But yes I agree maybe its time to update the system somewhat...its all competition and cost.?? Open Source will definitely not be one of those changes.? FWIW
