After replacing the RA worm and roller bearings on my GM8 the sudden
jumps in the drive have stopped, but I'm still getting in excess of
40 arcseconds of periodic error. I have made sure that there is no
side-to-side play of the worm in the bearing blocks and that the worm
turns smoothly with my full load on the mount. It is balanced
slightly to the east so as to put a small amount of resistance on the
drive and I have made sure the clutch is tightened well. What else
am I missing here? How likley is it that there is enough difference
in the new RA and Dec worms that swapping them could bring my PE down
to 30" or less? Or should I be looking at something different
entirely?
