Losmandy GM-8 at 0 Degrees
Very glad this group was started. I think not only will it help
existing or potential Losmandy owners (like myself), it should probably help Losmandy see issues that are causing frustration with their products so they can work on fixing those problems. Also I'm sure this egroup well reduce the amount of support calls Losmandy gets so they can focus on making their products even better! I'm looking at getting the GM-8, and will be taking it very to the equator. I noticed that the specs say that it can go down to 0 degrees, and in a recent exchange I had with a G-9 owner confirmed that the G-9 could go down to 0, except the dec axis hit the tripod leg. However on looking at the current picture of the GM-8 I noticed that there is a slotted arc that has secondary clamping bolt for the latitude adjustment (which the G-9 didn't have) and to me it doesn't look as though that arc is long enough to allow the mount to go to 0 degrees. The scale also only goes to 10 degrees. Can any one confirm if the current GM-8s with the slot will go to 0. And if they do is the dec axis and counterweight still a problem? Has anyone used these mounts at 0 degrees and were there any problems? TIA |

I have the older GM8 without the newer "slotted arc" and indeed it can go down to zero except that you will need the 12" pier extension to raise the counterweight shaft so that it clears the northern tripod leg. -----Original Message-----
