Hand Controller Frustration

I have a Titan mount, which I love, but I'm having an issue with the hand controller.

Last night after plugging in my hand controller into the Gemini Mini the touch screen would not respond. I shut down the mount and took the hand controller apart and reseated the Micro SD 4GB chip, which I was informed would solve the touch issue. When I again turned on the Hand Controller the menu was Red………..

I then tried the Gemini PC Controller by clicking on the Gemini Icon in the System Tray located at the bottom right of my laptop…Win11. I brought up the Categories and selected Kornephoros in Hercules. I clicked on the Sync then when to Rasalhague but it told me Object could not be reached. What I life in San Diego and the Gemini II has my location set to here but when the Hand Controller worked the other night I was able to align on Rasalhague without any issues.

I then tried the Hand Control in the Gemini Server which did not show any way to select a star for alignment. I then tried the Mobil Hand Controller which also did not allow me to align on Rasalhague.

Any suggestion on how to ‘fix’ the Hand Controller touch problem? Or is there a better Web Based interface for the Hand Controller?

Kenn

Hi Kenn, a couple of things come to mind. I assume you had your hand controller set to a different setting than red menus? If so, and having it turn to night mode after resetting the SD card suggests to me that the internal configuration may have been reset (or corrupted even). In that case maybe resetting to factory defaults and setting your parameters from scratch may help. This is, of course, assuming you get the touch function working ;). If the settings got reset or corrupt, your site/time/date may be causing your inability to find alignment stars.

Regarding the touch here’s a couple things to try:?

1. When the hand controller starts, there’s a brief message asking that you touch anywhere on the screen. That’s how you recalibrate the touch screen. Try that and see how it goes. My guess is the calibration may have been corrupt and when you touch somewhere, the sensor feels like you pressed somewhere else. This may cause you inadvertently “pressing” somewhere you did not intend to, making it more likely to mess with the settings. Or the press may not register at all, which would mean a completely unresponsive ?HC.
2. Try opening the HC case and make sure there’s nothing pressing on the screen, especially between the screen’s “frame” (the plastic case) and the screen itself. Any piece of debris can cause havoc
3. If all else fails, try a different cable.

That’s all I can think for now. Try this and let us know

good luck

Thank you for reading and responding to my query. I will try the initial screen where it calibrated the 'touch' and see if that helps.

Again thanks for the feedback.

Don’t over tighten the screws in the hand screen cover.?

If you are not able to reach a star or object which is obviously in view, you might check if you placed any limits on your altitude setting somewhere (I used 20 degrees in SGP). Or recheck you clock and synch with PC and/or double check if you are truly on the right longitude/latitude location and not some other default location.? Also recheck your mount safety limits for something amiss - you could be in a spot between the east and west limits which will prevent the mount from slewing there. You might try a series of other stars to see if it is just one target or other obvious targets than can't be reached...

As far as having access to an alignment star the HC does not have any issues. The Web/System Tray HC, if I understand correctly, uses the information already stored in the Gemini II System; so if the HC does not have any issues the Web/System Tray HC 'should' follow the same rules. I attached a new USB accessory/hub last night and everything worked as expected.?

Tonight, after staring the Gemini II the HC allowed me to move the mount West and South; I then did some other chores and 6 minutes later I tried to goto an alignment star; the touch of the HC screen produced no response. I then unplugged the HC waited 10 seconds and again plugged in the HC. I waited for the Calibration screen to recalibrate the touch, but the HC did not respond to a touch. I then unplugged the HC again and used the original cord, having been using a longer cable for the last 10 years or so, but again no response to the touch.

When putting the HC back together I only 'hand tighten' the screws.........................

I really do not want to have to pay $300.00 for a new HC. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds as if cable is bad losing connection.?? Do you have a multimeter to check it.?? The system is losing connection between the MU and HC.?? Does it respond ok if you pull up Gemini ASCOM?? Try wriggling the cables at both ends, particularity the MU socket.? Inspect it for foreign debris!? Or if you have a crimper....just crimp up a piece of flat FJ cable.

I also had a HC go bad because I put the plastic end plate in upside down which put force against the RJ socket.?? This lifted all the RJ pins, particularly the Tx/Rx data pins out of its socket seat so the pins touching each other.?? It would work...then stop at odd times.? I eventually tracked it to the HC end and saw it under magnifier and torch the RJ HC pins angled up and the others touching.

Inspect the HC ensure the cover end is not upside down and forcing the RJ jack at an angle?? Inspect the Rj pins!

Get back on this

If three nights of working shows the problem is fixed; then the problem is fixed.
?
I revisited the 'seating' of the touch screen and noticed it was not seated properly.
After I heard a beautiful 'click' I put the HC back together and so far....................the HC is responding to my touch.
?
Thank you for your responses.

Kenn?
?
seating where? ? The connectors to bottom PCB? ?The connector? ?I’m a little confused and I’m sure this info may help others in the future !

Well it worked for three nights but tonight the HC does not respond to a 'touch'.
?
The touch screen and its 10,000 pins were not seated correctly so I disconnected it from the socket it fits into and reseated it.
When it 'bottomed out', the pins of the touch screen were well seated in the socket they belong to, there was a 'click' when the pins reached bottom.
I then screwed in the touch screen and replaced the cover then for three nights it worked, but now tonight it quit responding to 'touch'.
?
After turning on the mount and the HC not responding to 'touch' I started the Web based HC but it also would not respond so I started the Mobil Hand Controller
available from the Gemini Web Server. It responds to touch. In the System Tray there is not 'ASCOM Geminin Status'.
After I started APT(AstroPhotographyTool) it connected to the mount and now there is a 'Geminin Status' in the System Tray.
I'm now using Stellarium to control the mount, but I'm unable to set alignment stars through Stellarium.
?
Can things get any weirder?
?
I really dislike using the ASCOM Gemini since it does not have the functions I'm used to with the HC.?

Attachment is the message when I 'Add1 Align' or 'Sync'

I think its time to send the HC for repair.?? I suspect the HC touch screen is playing up.?? I have seen this happen, but, mainly on the older first version HCs.? The touch screen is a resistive pad and it is sensed by an X/Y ADC IC that converts this for the processor.
?
Are you using a stylus?? I have seen them flaky and a stylus helps.? YMMV.? Probably best to send to Losmandy they can replace the screen.?? Sure as roosters crow in the morning, they probably won't be able to replicate the issue, but if that's the case, ask for replace the screen on spec.?? I hope this works or my name is "mud"!

Using a rubber tip stylus. After one hour the HC is now responding to 'touch'.
Problem is mount no longer knows where it is; I tried to goto next object but it could not even come close.
This was using the ASCOM Gemini HC and using the 'Add1 Align' to set alignment stars.
I will contact Losmandy and see if they repair HC.?
?
Thank you for your time.
