GM8 lubrication

Hello all

Are any of these two options OK for re greasing my GM8? Anything against them?

Thanks!

Guilherme

Hi?Guilherme,

We recommend against lithium

Any grease with Teflon is a good candidate

at the factory we use jet-lube MP-50 moly paste

there are a few others on the forum i'm sure will make some good suggestions as well

Thanks Brian!

I think I’m gonna order from amazon then. It’s taking a little longer to arrive but I can wait. Mount hasn’t been re greased in 10 years I guess it can wait a few more days

Edited

Order this stuff from Amazon, it is the BEST. Never runs and makes a mess, never dries out and gums up the mount, stays soft even when extremely cold. Order the one with PTFE NOT silicone!?

Hi,
Any argument for advising against lithium grease?
Thanks
Claudio

Hi Claudio

factory specifically recommends against lithium grease. I forget the exact reason, but i recall talking with Scott that it ends up seizing up after a few years

I guess I can give you my example of why we shouldn’t ?use it.?

My mount had the same grease for 10 years. It was the naval lithium grease someone recommended years ago. This is the result. I had grease in every single piece on both axes

I use lithium grease only for the worm & gear lubrication.
No problems so far.

Lithium is the worst grease for the mount, it gets hot and drips and runs, it gets cold and stiff , it also dries up and leaves hard clay behind. Buy a true synthetic based grease with Teflon, I like SuperLube with Teflon, it is the best stuff out there IMO and has the lab tests to prove it. Here in the USA Amazon has tubs of the stuff for $10 and is lasts forever. I have been giving blobs to my friends with Losmandy mounts in ziplocks and have rebuilt about a dozen friends Losmandy G11 and GM8 mounts using that can and I still have 2/3 of it left.?

+1 for superlube

I am using Superlube in my GM-8, works great. But I also have a can of industrial moly grease that I used to use on the brakes in a high performance sports sedan many years ago. It seems to plate itself on any metal surface -- was curious if this might be usable as well?

Thanks,

Greg Latiak

I've just used SuperLube (PTFE) on my G11. Too early to say but I am expecting it to be fine.

I use the MP50 on the spur gear. I find it keeps the worm wet and has a nice consistency. But nowhere else.

Moly greases are great in their place -- very high load bearings and sliding contacts.? But neither the GM-8 or 11 have any surfaces that are that heavily loaded.? In addition, the matrix that Moly greases use is not that different that lithium greases tends and tends to dry out leaving a rather cake-like residue.

Go with a synthetic grease designed for wide ranging temperatures.? Super Lube is fine (although I think the addition of the Teflon particles is overblown/overrated) as are several other synthetic greases.

Jim

Highly slippery is always better if you can keep in in the right place and it doesn't migrate much. SuperLube does just that and stays soft at low temps with low startup torque. Just read the TDS ASTM test results for SuperLube Multi-Purpose Grease with Syncolon. It really is "Super"

When I got my G11 the gears were dry so as a temporary measure I cleaned off the grime I could get to without stripping the whole thing down, so cleaned the worm gears and the large gears they drive, also the motor gearbox and re-greased with high melting point bearing grease that I used for my car repairs as that was all I had, it does not run or clog, when I strip the Ra and Dec and clean it would it be ok to use the same grease or is this too thick for long term use?

Dave,

The problem is that wheel bearing grease generally is not meant to be used the way mounts are used.

The best grease will use a pure synthetic based oil with a high drop point and very low separation and evaporation rate. An ideal mount grease must not dry out and leave any hard material behind as most clay based greases do, think lithium bearing grease. An ideal grease must also stay as soft as yogurt below freezing and add minimal to no additional torque while working in a sub zero temperature. And yet the grease must also be super slippery and have a high resistance to wear and lubricant shearing.?

So far I have only found one grease that does all of this, SuperLube with Teflon. SuperLube does all of the above and it is food safe to boot. Cool huh?

Guilherme Vênere,

Not only is the grease drying out but that is just WAY TO MUCH GREASE! The clutches must have had grease on them and slipping too.?

I'm sure the mount will operate much better once cleaned up and lubed correctly. Keep us posted.

Hi Chip

Oh yes I know that, those were the before pictures, I re-greased everything with superlube and put just a small layer this time.

Btw i just noticed is my setting circle upside down? :D
