Getting great alignment
Hello.? I'm trying to get my G11 in alignment so goto after goto are dead on. Not quite sure how to do it.? Is there a tutorial or a video for this?? I'm a little confused especially between align and synchronize. They sound like the same thing but I know they're not.? So if I use this workflow what is my problem:
1 Polar align as best I can using Losmandy polar scope.? Set mount at CWD. 2 Do a Quick or cold start. Either tosses any previous alignment, model, whatever and I can start fresh.? 3 Enter all the parameters correctly and boot up. 4 Do polar align assist if I think I need to BEFORE I 'build a model' 5 GOTO bright star.? Carefully center the star. 6 Select 'Align' ??? or? 'Synchronize' ??? Which?? 7 Select and goto another bright star. Prefer >4HA from first. 8 Center and align or sync this star. Which?? 9 Continue this until I think I'm done. Test? So? this should build a DB in the controller allowing spot on gotos yes?? Is this a 'model'?? Do I now 'Save this model'? If so do I recall it each time I start or does it automatically take effect? Now I've also seen info on building two models one East of meridian and one West of it.? Is that a big deal? I mean if I did the above, shouldn't my mount be able to accurately locate objects anywhere in the sky? Thanks for any help and just point me to a complete tutorial or video if there is one. |
Hi George! Ok...I think you are nearly there. The words Align and Synch are this way in the Gemini usage: Synch means:. Do not change the Model parameters.? Just recenter the Model so the present target is dead on. Align means:. Modify the Model parameters so the prevent target is at its present position, and all the earlier targets are also centered.?? If you do not move your mount at all (no adjustment of AZ or ELevation...legs of tripod didn't shift) and you Park each night, then your Model should remain valid night after night.? Then just Warm Reboot and use the mount as it was the night before. If you think your clutches loosened, then we're retightened, do a Warm Reboot.? This will ask you to Align to First Star.? This only does a Synch of the last night's model.?? If you have moved your AZ or ELevation or moved the entire mount then you will need to do a Cold Boot.? That resets all Model values to zero.?? The Model values are "error correction" values to a perfectly polar aligned system with zero cone angle and other types of physical mechanical errors.? The closer the values are to zero the better.?? When you do the very first "Align to a Bright Star" the only thing that is set is the "encoder values".? None of what are called the Model Values in the Gemini-1 manual are calculated yet.? Only after the 2nd star is Aligned (not Synch...that does nothing to the model values) then the Model values start to evolve.? After about 4 stars the values will stabilize... Hi George assuming you have Gemini 2 and are building a model for the first time (cold start) you use Align 1 Polar align as best I can using Losmandy polar scope.? Set mount at CWD. 2 Do a Quick or cold start. Either tosses any previous alignment, model, whatever and I can start fresh.? 3 Enter all the parameters correctly and boot up. 4 Do polar align assist if I think I need to BEFORE I 'build a model' 5 GOTO bright star.? Carefully center the star. 6 Select 'Align' ??? or? 'Synchronize' ??? Which?? ALIGN 7 Select and goto another bright star. Prefer >4HA from first. 8 Center and align or sync this star. Which?? ALIGN 9 Continue this until I think I'm done. 3 STARS ON EACH SIDE OF MERIDIAN IS PLENTY Test? Michael - your below comment is not accurate for Gemini 2. Now that you own one with your G11T I hope you will update your assumptions The first align will create HA and DEC index offsets. A one-star alignment is often enough to greatly improve pointing? 3 model points (+1 on opposite side of pier) will add polar axis terms 7 model points will add non-perpendicularity terms On Mon, May 3, 2021 at 7:43 PM Michael Herman <mherman346@...> wrote:

Hi George, ? ? ?I generally follow Brian's work flow here. ? In my case I use Polemaster to do a polar alignment. ? I always do a cold start when I go out. ?Generally, 3 stars in the model, two on one side, 1 on the other is good enough to put a target on my 4/3 sensor at 2000 mm. ? I usually do 4 or 5 and add stars as the night progresses. ?Originally, I would center each star in the eyepiece as Brian describes, then put my camera in after building a quick model. ? Since I learned to do plate solving, I use THAT to do the centering as I build the model. ?Once I get 4 or 5 stars centered and included in the model, ?I am usually good for the night and do not have to plate solve or add stars etc... ? Good polar alignment is of course critical to all of this. ?If I am doing visual work, and I have good polar alignment, Generally my target star will be in the FOV of my 53 mm plossl at 1000 mm on the first go. ? I find Gemini II to be quite accurate compared to other mounts I have used, and once you get a feel for the work flow, it is actually faster, since I have less hunting around to do. ?Lots of ways to do this and with practice you will find the flow that works for you.
