G-11 Gearbox Replacement

The RA gearbox on my G-11 from 2011 finally broke at one of the plastic tabs.? Can Brian or someone else with Losmandy confirm that the currently shipping replacements have the metal rivets?? The picture on the Losmandy web site looks like it is the old plastic design.

Thanks,

Russ

Hi Russ

can you shoot me an email to techsupport at - i can check that tomorrow. if you can send a pic of which part broke i can confirm that

i don't think the design has changed recently, but 2011 is a long time ago

Brian,

I'll send you an email.? For reference, I found this link at the Gemini 2 site and some discussion on Cloudy Nights about it.? My gearbox looks like the "old" one at the link.

I dont have the gearbox off as only one of the plastic "rivets" has broken and its still somewhat functional.

Got it, yes i was looking at that too

i'm 99% sure we have the new ones, but i just?want to confirm with Scott

FWIW, I just got a new pair of gearboxes direct from Losmandy a few weeks ago, and yes they are the metal rivets.

I had a gear box separate like you describe -? the plastic section separated from the metal base plate.

?

I repaired the unit by doing the following¡.

?? Drill through the plastic to remove the tabs that fit into the 3 mounting holes.

?? Use three (3) ? inch long flathead screws ?(about #3?) to go through the plastic side ¨C into the metal base.

????? (Use a screw that would fit into the existing if the threads were ground off¡? A steel screw will work better than a brass screw ¨C because the brass screw threads won¡¯t do much ¡®cutting¡¯ into the metal base plate of the gearbox.)

?

I used a spare screw several times to give some measure of ¡®threading¡¯ the hole.?? THEN ¨C used new screws to hold the unit together.

?

I think I got maybe 2 to 3 complete turns of thread engagement, and the result is probably a lot stronger than the plastic tabs.

?

Repaired unit operates nicely.

I ordered 2 new ones from Losmandy.? They confirmed that they do use metal rivets in them now.? I may try to repair the broken one as you suggest Michael.

Or you could use the McLennan equivalent. They have are steel back and front.
