FS: Gemini-1 and deluxe hand controller
Not long back I was sent a Gemini-1 for repair. Quite a few parts were
toast including both the Qaudrature Decoder ICs, and neither Ren¨¦ nor Scott had any to sell at the time (*). So on my no-fix, no fee basis the owner told me to keep it for spares/repair and found another G1 to replace it. Since then I've been investigating the motor controller circuitry in the G-1 and set out to re-create the decoder PALs in the G1. I had what I thought was a workable CUPL file on Thursday when the SOIC to DIP adapter for my ROM burner turned up. As I had one of the decoder ICs in hand (3750022-01 Rev. 2) I tried to see if I could read it. Much to my immense surprise the security fuse had not been set and I could read it. This meant that I was able to burn replacement ICs directly from the JEDEC file and repair this G1. The upshot is that I have a G-1 and deluxe hand controller available FS here in UK. I've upgraded the ROM to Level 4 V1.05 and modified the serial port to put +5V on pin 1 just like the G-2. I'm asking ?150 plus shipping for it which is my normal repair fee. If interested please contact me off list [mailto:david.partridge@...] (*) Since then, Ren¨¦ has sweet talked Aveox into doing a run of these ICs and has purchased a number of them for his use. If you need them you can get them from either Ren¨¦ or myself. Clear, dark skies David |

David, Someone got a great bargain...very nice of you to offer that. ? Is there something wrong with your present unit? ...or are you just seeking a spare?? The boards are usually repairable by replacing the faulty component. ? Bren, Sorry to read of your hospitalization. Get well soon.? Funny spelling of Aus. Is it not magical and perfect with talking joeys as the movies show?? Michael? On Sep 3, 2017 01:47, "'David C. Partridge' david.partridge@... [Losmandy_users]" <Losmandy_users@...> wrote:

It was such a good buy could not pass up.? Nothing wrong with my unit, but haven't used it in a while.? Hope to get it back up and running.? Had a problem with first start up after sitting for a few years, but haven't gone back to? it.? Would be nice to have a spare at a reasonable price.? I personally see no reason to go to G2. Thanks, John...Glad to know you are not in panic mode.? I do have a spare Gemini 1 too (for 2 active Gemini 1's on a G11 and GM8), but the spare lacks the hand controller. ? As a group, we are in good shape for repairs on Gemini 1s.? David has repairs covered in UK, and his breakthrough on the motor control logic chips is very important.? I've been able luckily to fix a few in the US.? Spare parts are still available for most of the system.? It is great to have almost continual improvements in mechanics and electronics and software going on worldwide, using the Losmandy chassis.? The mark of a great group. Best, Michael? David,
I have a G1 that displays some odd behavior at times (sudden scrolling of the quick-menu on the HC, blocking all autoguiding - probably due to some erratic contact btw the HC contact and the "mother board" of the unit, I guess). I tried to email you off the list, but couldn't retrieve your email address. Can you contact me? magnus @ vista . se ? Best, Magnus |
Hi guys, Sounds to me like some slight shorting either in the hand controller membrane switch, or possibly on the surface of the board inside the hand controller.? I am thinking slight surface corrosion causing erratic current leakage, that looks to the G1 like hand controller right (East) diamond button presses....those would cause fast message scrolling. ? So... First open up the hand controller by removing the 2 back Phillips screws, and the inspect and clean any residues from both sides of the board.? For that, I use a cotton swab ( Qtip ) dipped in alcohol. ? Also look at the ribbon cable connectors for the thin wide flex cable between the board and the front membrane switches, inspecting for corrosion.? Also inspect the ribbon cable for cracks as these can become brittle over time too. ? Also look at the large connection socket for the hand controller on the G1 left side...sometimes corrosion can occur there.? Just clean everything with alcohol using a cotton swab. With luck, you will be back in business. Best regards, Michael On Wed, Sep 20, 2017 at 4:26 AM jfev5mnsvqiyzpq756wvokt55jve7sbg2esr5mip@... [Losmandy_users] <Losmandy_users@...> wrote:

Naturally, a 2am, I missed the fact that the hand controller is not connected. Sorry for that error. ? But I'd still look for corrosion at the hand controller socket, and the G1 board. ? Best of luck, Michael On Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 1:34 AM Michael Herman <mherman346@...> wrote:

Hi!
I tried cleaning, and there might have been some small something close to the connectors btw HC-connector and the Gemini PCB. I cleaned with alcohol. After that, it worked a full night, so it might have helped..... but it is tricky when it is an intermittent behavoir. I'll keep trying - keeping fingers crossed... Magnus |
Keep testing in daytime Magnus... conect and disconnect...power up and down.? If you've still got trouble, you will see it.? If not, you are probably assured for the night.?? Once I had intermittent trouble with the handbox I also cleaned the board, sickets, and connectors with alcohol swabs and the trouble has gone away...now several years.?? There is a battery in the Gemini1 of course, and voltage and moisture drive corrosion.? So on finding a small beetle inside my Gemini1 once, I cut some heavy felt cloth and stuffed it around the open areas of the Gemini1 around the hand controller socket, and around the RS232 and other sockets.? ?I tried to block as much moisture and bugs crawling in as possible.? ?I'm not sure it solved the moisture issue but it did prevent bugs from crawling in...? corrosion concern is also a reason to remove the 12-18V DC voltage from an outdoor unit when not using it.?? Stay well,? Michael? On Sep 23, 2017 08:17, "jfev5mnsvqiyzpq756wvokt55jve7sbg2esr5mip@... [Losmandy_users]" <Losmandy_users@...> wrote:
