A couple of questions for the group
I just up-graded my older G-11 to the tucked motor design w spring loaded worms. During setup a problem and a question came up
1. I stripped the head out of one of my cap screws shown below, Red arrow. Could anyone tell me what the specs are for this screw, Home Depot doesn't carry it's like. 2. In the image of the servo motor is installed with a 180 degree rotation from the pictures on the Losmandy web site, note the position of the plug in for the DEC cord from Gemini. Is there a known problem with this orientation? Would appreciate any help. Thanks Tim |

Could anyone tell me what the specs are for this screw, Home Depot doesn't carry it's like.10-32 x 1/2 socket head cap screw. Most Ace Hardware stores will have these. NB: It should never be necessary to tighten those screws to the point where you round them out. If you don't have a good 5/32" hex key, they carry those at Ace as well. 2. In the image of the servo motor is installed with a 180 degree rotation from the pictures on the Losmandy web site, note the position of the plug in for the DEC cord from Gemini. Is there a known problem with this orientation?? I don't think the picture on the website is correct, as there would be no way to route the cable past the worm mounting screw. My mount doesn't have the SLW upgrade, however the motor is mounted exactly as shown in your photo. There is no issue having the connector in that orientation. |
Tim.
The red arrow screw is Motor to Gearbox screw. It is #4-40UNC x 5/8" Stainless steel Socket Cap screw. Do not over tighten it can strip the GB plastic thread. This topic comes up often, last time Jun 12 on Gemini.IO group. That's why the database was done (years back), see below.. Anyone can do an entry or ask someone to update more entries (I just fixed a few entries on 13 Jun 24), if they see an error ....tell mods or someone to fix. Its there to be used by all. There is a list of screws etc over at: Gemini Users.IO group/ Database/Parts Screws Aftermarket, here (if the link works). I think M.Collins identified the "green arrow screw", not the "red arrow screw". As far as I know its fine to orientate the motor this way. Cheers Brendan -- Brendan |
Paul,David. Are common screws and threads etc a good Gemini FAQs topic?

Just beware that you are tightening this screw into plastic threads. Just a snug with the proper sized (3/32") Allen key will do enough to keep the motor seated well. Often a ball head end works better because the access is on a bit of an angle, not straight in. But if you overtighten, you'll strip out the plastic threads with the metal screw, and only replacing the whole gearbox will fix that. Don’t want to “dis” anyone but as John said don’t over tighten. Also ball headed hex have a tendency to snap the balls off in the head. I know I’ve done it on a Moonlite in a hidden deep hex grub screw.
