Quattro and G11?

Hi.

I'm considering getting a 10 inch SW Quattro (Newt) and use it on my Losmandy G11.?? Does anyone have any experience with this combination??? If not, how about experience with just the Quattro?

I'd probably upgrade the focuser and get a good quality coma corrector.

?

Thoughts??? Warnings?? Alternatives?

Thanks.

Bob

Hi Bob

I have exactly this setup, I was just using it last night. G11 works great with it no complaints at all. I think i have around 50lb counterweight

A coma corrector is a must. You might even consider the maksutov version of the quattro (skylux?), which does not require the coma corrector, but price-wise they are about the same after adding the corrector.

I did not upgrade my focuser but added the ZWO eaf to it, and with some finagling and youtube help, it works just fine. I also upgraded the 2" connector from the standard 1 pin to a 3 pin, i think it was about $30 from hutech

good collimation is also a big deal for newts.? you will want to add some fans for cooling

Placement of camera etc. is kind of tricky. I also added a top plate for mounting the guidescope

Let me know what other questions you have

PS i should mention there are at least two others far more capable than me with this scope: Jim Potts and Anthony Quintile. they may have suggestions as well

We use an F4.8 10¡± Uk Orion optics 1/10 pv upgraded optics. On our G11 it gives fantastic viewing without any coma correction.?

I think that is the same as the skylux - the built-in corrector lens at the front, right?

Thanks Brian and Stephan.

I considered a Mak-Newt.? The SW 190mm M-N looks attractive but I think I'd like to have the larger aperture and speed of the f4 Newt.

I actually wanted to get a Telescop Service 10" Newt but they have at least a 6 month wait and shipping from Germany could be expensive and risky.

Brian:

1) What corrector do you use?
2) Does the focuser support a full imaging train with corrector, filter wheel, and say, ASI1600mm?
3) Do you use an OAG or guidescope?
4) Do you have any issues with flexure in the imaging train?

Thanks again.

Bob

Hi Bob

see below

1) What corrector do you use?
- funny thing, this is the correct "larger" coma corrector, but the picture shows the older model. you have to watch for the part number
?
2) Does the focuser support a full imaging train with corrector, filter wheel, and say, ASI1600mm?
Qualified yes. Personally i found the attachment screw a bit concerning, so I updated with the hutech i mentioned. it's much more solid. But others have a full setup hanging off their focuser and it seems to work fine for them, no complaints
?
3) Do you use an OAG or guidescope?
guidescope with clamshell, which I think is a must. no guide rings for this setup!
?
4) Do you have any issues with flexure in the imaging train?
Not that i've noticed. I am not a huge fan of the newtonian stars i.e., the?

this is an image i finished but didn't publish, mostly because I murdered the stars while fiddling with the generalized hyperbolic stretch script, but it can give you an idea of what it looks like. This is with a 294mc

(not sure if you can see this, but let me know)

I should also mention stray light is a problem for me - i have a couple street lights nearby so my flats are never correcting well. I recently added a shade so hopefully that will help

?

?
Thanks again.

Bob

Brian,

Sorry to bug you one more time:

1) I'm not sure what you mean by clamshell for the guidescope.?? I would never use rings but I'm not sure what you mean.
2) Do you think the stray light is getting in near the focuser or into the top of the OTA?? I read somewhere that the stock focuser leaks.

I kinda like the diffraction spikes, but maybe that will wear off......??

Good image of the splinter!?? And I like your smugmug site too.?? I use them too.?

Like this (image for illustration, not endorsement of specific vendor)

?

I'm good with diffraction spikes, but newts have a tendency to show all kinds of obstructions, not just the spider vanes. Here's a particularly poor star rendition, but it shows the primary mirror clamps, possibly the focuser itself which obstructs the tube a bit, etc

Re TS-Optics 10" f/4:

Could look at FLO.? I order from them regularly.? Being US based myself, I find the lack of tax more than makes up for the shipping.? My 10" f/5 took a week to be delivered.?

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/ts-telescopes/ts-photon-10-f4-advanced-newtonian-telescope-with-steel-tube.html

Thanks.? I had checked FLO.?? They only carry the Photon models, which are made by GSO.?? I was interested in the versions made in Germany.

aren't they all basically made by GSO?

Unless they are , TS makes their own version in Germany.? They also sell the Photon version which GSO makes.

Wrong link.? Meant this one:

Brian,

Do you have a link to the Hutech connector you mentioned?

Bob

you bet

Hey Brian:

Do you screw the Hutech adapter all the way down to it's shoulder??

I have the 10" Sky-Watcher Quattro 250P and from the 200P manual (I couldn't find a 250P manual) the focuser end of the draw tube is M54.5 X 1 mm. I bought the Hutech adapter, but it's threads and size seem to be M54 X .75 mm. It does thread into the draw tube but it doesn't thread all the one down to the Hutech's shoulder.

I'm curious how your using it?

Bill

Hi Bill

yes that's correct - it doesn't thread all the way down (iirc, i'm not in front of it) but i found it is much more secure via the 3 thumbscrews than the default version
