Any one using an ST-i for guider with Losmandy G2 conversation

Morning all,

I am having no success with using the ST-i guider for use my my G11/G2 modified. ?I have tried PHP, which does not work well once guide star is selected and even have gone back to SBIG's CCDOPS, which I used with my ST-5c pretty well successful in tracking and controlling the G11. ?I am not sure where/how this problem I have with the ST-i & G2 combination comes from or whether is is just plain incompatibility or most likely operator error. ? Also, ?if someone has a cheat sheet on their set & control. I would appreciate having a copy of it.
Thanks for any assistance,
Doug

10 years ago or so I used it with limited success using my 492 drive and CCDDops. The large pixels made it hard to get good guiding at longer f.l. ?I switched over to a asi 120 with PHD2 and never looked back.?

Hi Doug,

Not clear yet what's causing your issue.? You said "modified" but what exactly has been modified?? How does the mod affect auto guiding?

You say you have a Gemini-2.? That has several ways to set up autoguiding.? It has a direct auto guide input port (ST4 port).? It also has a USB B port and internal USB controller that allows serial communication and so you can use, say, PHD2 for autoguiding.? It also has a CAT5 port that allows high speed communication with the PC and PHD2 with that.? I use the serial port on the H-2 like the serial port on the G-1, with PHD2 autoguiding.??

If none of those G-2 ports work perhaps your camera has a faulty output?? Try to use a different auto guide camera like a ZWO ASI (120 or other models all have an ST4 output port on them).? That way you can determine if the problem is with the Gemini-2, the G11 mount, or the camera you are using.??

Best of luck,
Michael

Hi Doug,

What are the symptoms? Does the mount not guide? Can you calibrate the autoguiding software? Are you plugging in ST-i guider cable into Gemini guider port, or are you using ASCOM pulse-guiding from PHD? That second one may be the way to avoid any compatibility issues between the guider output and G2 guider input.

Regards,

? ? ?-Paul

Hi Paul,
First off thank you for reply incase I did not notice it.

I am back at trying to the Sti to guide the Losmandy G11/g2 as it once i click on the star noting happens and quickly the star is moving out of the box as if the software is not working. ?I am wondering though do I need to have the cable to the desktop pc and a cable from the STi to the Losmany G2 panel or should on the one cable is sufficient? ? Just cannot get PHP2 to grab star either selected by me or letting the program select the guide star. ?Also I do not the mount is on line as PHD2 sees it and goes green on the display.

Sincerely,

Thanks Mike and I apologize for not getting back too you sooner. ?I have tried it both ways Serial from STi to the G2 and USB B port cable and neither seem to lock the guide scope to the mount as best as I can tell.

My question is/was basically do I need to have both ports active (cables to the G2 and Portable computer) or just the USB cable to the portable.

I hope it is clear what i am writing. ??

Sincerely,
Doug

The says:

GUIDE PORT: This is where you connect the supplied 6 conductor modular phone style cable to the Autoguider (sometimes labeled "CCD") input port on your mount when using the ST-i as an autoguider, or when using Track & Accumulate with mount corrections (see the CCDOPS Manual for details of this mode

USB and POWER: Attach the 15-foot USB cable to any USB port on your computer AFTER you have installed the drivers and software for the ST-i. The USB port also provides power to the camera.

Appendix A ¨C Connector and Cables
Telescope Jack
The Telescope Jack is used to provide tracking signals to the tele- scope drive. Viewed from outside the camera, looking in, it has the following pin-out:

The Left, Down, Up and Right signals are driven from optically isolated photo transistors that conduct when telescope movement is desired. They can sink up to 25ma and can hold off up to 25V. If what you are plugging into is voltage based you¡¯ll need an external pull-up resistor. The Common signal is connected to the common on the four photo- transistors.

This appears to be the so-called ST-4 standard.
