Hi Russ,
Actually learning myself, too. When starting, I used Scott's ?for a 3 West, 1 East beginning Model.
Later, I would do 3 West, 3 East, 3 West, 3 East and kept doing that until the objects (Stars) were landing centered in my FOV (field of view). It wasn't the right way to do a Model, but it worked. And it worked without doing a Polar alignment.
Basically, the Gemini 2 trained itself around my inadeptness.
Now that I'm older and wiser, I have a Polar Alignment and Model building routine that is working very well. Sharpcap has a PA routine that works great. (The adjustments can be quite unnerving as you get dialed in. Because the slightest tweak can over do an adjustment. So take heed. Let Sharpcap do several solves as it settles in.)
But you acquire , then subscribe (costs 10 pounds sterling. ~$12 USD) for a whole year of use, to get the Pro version. I was struggling with it at first, then Brian helped me refine my settings, and helped as well.
Once I got Sharpcap to work with my Atik Infiniky camera, I was and am able to get a bang-on Polar Alignment. After which, I close Sharpcap, and do my modeling with my Gemini hand controller.
Usually for me, a 3 West, 3 East, and a Bright Star check.
Then off to find my victims in Stellarium to suck the light out of.
Others use other methods, this is mine currently.
I never expect my mount to come up with an object dead centered. But my objects almost always are in my FOV. So I can center them up, start PHD2, and get to imaging very quickly.
But it's a method.
Note: Beginning my method is a focusing routine to get my Infiniky sharply in focus. Because Sharpcap does not like to work without sharp focus for me.
But Polar Alignment is the mechanical set-up of the mount, then the Modeling trains the Gemini where things are in your specific location.
It's really pretty amazing how accurate your mount can be once everything comes together.
I tried Syncing one night. But I just started over and stay away from that nonsense any more. LOL! ;^)
Maybe someday when I grow more whiskers of experience?
