Pre purchase questions GM811G

Hi all,
New member here.? I have settled on the GM811G with HD tripod and have a few questions.? In no particular order, they are:
1. I plan to autoguide with my ASI120mm camera to the mount's ST4 port via laptop or the the ASIAIR Pro, but am not familiar with the TTL connection.? What is the difference between ST4 and TTL and is there an adapter needed here?
2. Can my Polemaster function with the mount (assuming there is an adapter)?
3. Are any components sourced from China?
4. Will the HD mount will ride on my Scope Buggy without modification?? I did not note any dimensional information on the website.
5. The Losmandy website indicates that this mount is in stock.? I will want some accessories such as the RA Ext Kit and GPS.? If one placed an order today, approx how long for shipment?

I am sure there will be more.? Your indulgence is appreciated.

I've never heard of TTL connection? The GM811G Gemini supports ST4 no problem, but also (and preferably) pulse guiding, where the guide camera is connected to the computer and the computer is connected to the mount.?

others have used ASIAir Pro with Gemini successfully, so maybe they can chime in here

2. Can my Polemaster function with the mount (assuming there is an adapter)?
Yes?and yes there is an adapter. here's just one example:?

3. Are any components sourced from China?
no?
4. Will the HD mount will ride on my Scope Buggy without modification?? I did not note any dimensional information on the website.
I don't know for sure, but i know lots of people use their Losmandy with Scope Buggy, so i'm guessing yes.

it's in stock, but we are still backlogged on getting orders out. if you order direct from losmandy i'm guessing it will be at least weeks. You can drop a line to tanya at losmandy dot com and ask her. she has the latest info on lead times?

I am sure there will be more.? Your indulgence is appreciated.

sure! ask away ;)?

Thank you for responding to my questions, Brian.

My question about TTL was prompted by the section on the website, second to last item, under DRIVE ELECTRONIC GEMINI 2 GOTO?? GEMINI 2 GOTO ELECTRONICS (G):? Auto Guide Port (TTL)

If my old back can handle the extra 6 lbs of EQ head weight ( 27 lbs vs 33 lbs) , are there any other differences between the GM811GHD and the G11G beside (1) $300 cost, (2) larger DEC gear, and (3) increased weight capacity of 10 lbs??

Minor nit:? I noticed that the photos of the mount for the GM811G and the G11G both show a mount inscribed "G-11."? Is that designation merely telling us that the two mounts are just variations of the same 'generic' G-11 mount?? I am probably not wording this effectively, but I hope you get my idea.

Warren

Hi Warren,

I have a GM8 and G11 and just started getting the ASIAIR-PRO ready to test under a real sky. I had been using the G11 with the usual cooled astro camera and autoguider with a Skull Canyon i& NUC on the dovetail to run everything. But I wanted to switch to a setup that was not run off of utility power so the ASIAIR-PRO was my choice.??

#1)? ?The Gemini has an Ethernet port and it is better than using the USB port for autoguiding. The ASIAIR-PRO just needs a Ethernet cable run to the Ethernet post of the Gemini??
#2)? ?The PoleMaster works great but you do not want the dedicated Losmandy PoleMaster adapter. Buy an ADM PoleMaster dovetail clamp and clamp to a dovetail top or bottom for polar alignment using SharpCap with your PoleMaster to do polar alignments, it works great, better than the native PoleMaster app!?
#3)? ?AFAIK no.?
#4)? ?Maybe, maybe not, depends on how your scopebuggy is configured.?
#5)? ?AFAIK about a week after payment but check with Tanya.?

HTH,

Chip

Hi Warren, Welcome to the Losmandy Users Group!
Brian answered your questions pretty well.
What are your planned targets? Visual, or Imaging?

I image Deep Space Objects, Nebula specific. That was and still is my passion.
As such, I use an 80 mm ED, triplet refractor. In plain Engrish, my load is light on my GM811GHD mount. 17.5 pounds currently. And not likely to change.
So the GM811GHD is perfect for me. I have no aspirations of trying to mount some monster telescope. (Oh, I do dream of a 4" or 5", but realize that probably won't ever happen.)
So the extra 10 pounds the G11G offers was not something I could see needing, nor can I after 6 months of use and ownership.

My needs were a mount I could make work for me, and not me for it.
I added the AKS and TKS hand knobs, ease of use and easy dismantling are a part of my ideal mount.
I added the EX12, because I could always see the advantage of having a Portable Pier configuration.
I added the RAEXT, because it really aids in sectionalizing my mount into manageable "chunks" for me to carry out, and then back in. (My CFO requires I don't leave my mount outside. I reasoned that the HD tripod has no Motors or electrical stuff in it, so she allows me to cover in place. ;^) )
Scott's bayonet type mounting of the tripod and EX12, and the RAEXT, allowed me to have manageable pre-assemblies that assemble precisely and repeatable night after night.?

Recently I've been exploring the No Meridian Flip advantages of the RA extension. My first try of it turned into a 3.611 hour continuous run of images that yielded 1,300 images, 10 seconds each, for a 13,000 second image of the Lagoon Nebula.
I know of NO other mount, in any price range, that offers the owner so many advantages as the Losmandy line of equipment does.
Like me, you have come to your own conclusions. My advice is to decide your use (visual, imaging, Planetary, other) then determine how much capacity you want, (50 or 60 pounds), and if you want to "chunk" your mount assemblies like I did for easier moving or not. All advantages Scott Losmandy has designed into his mounts over the years of perfecting his products.
Lastly Warren, Your new Losmandy mount is personally checked and perfectly tuned by Scott Losmandy himself. I've witnessed it myself.
And you've come to the right place to ask any and every questions you may have.

No pictures, didn't happen, Right?

Incidentally Warren, has a Polar Alignment routine in it that works great.
That is what I use now.
Brian advised me of how to adjust it to work with my Atik Infinity Camera, and I can get excellent Polar Alignment.
It saved me a bunch of money, and gives me something I can really zero in with. Literally.
I dial my 811 in to all zero's, beyond excellent alignment. I try an remove ALL human error. It's a challenge I enjoy.

removed all my doubt and answered all my questions.
Sharpcap costs ~$12 USD

To me, I like that it is using the same equipment, my main telescope, to Polar Align. So my Polar Alignment is true to my imaging lens.

Thanks for all of your comments, Sonny.

My main interest is visual, but I am being drawn toward the Event Horizon of imaging.? After I receive the new mount, I will be on the hunt for a SW180.? In combination with the Canon 200mm f/2.8, RedCat, and SV70T, I will have lunar, planetary, and DSO's fairly well covered.? Still taking baby steps with the modded Canon M50.

Warren

I very much appreciate your comments, Chip.

Hi Warren,

I left out information on #1, the ST4 autoguider interface has been standardized for many many years and the Gemini 2-mini is fully compatible with that interface. The term TTL stands for Transistor Transistor Logic which is a way of saying a circuit uses a 5V level logic level. This was once common but is fading as modern integrated circuits and chip logic is moving to 3.3V and even lower in some applications.?

Not really useful information for the non-electronic people these days. Just know that ST4 on modern autoguider and mount controller ports are all compatible. But it can't hurt to verify as you have done.?

Regarding #3, the thing is that the world today I is very small and buying from an American brand or supplier is no guarantee of getting only American made parts. For example one of the best American bearing makers produces many tons of high quality bearings with their name on the in China. Asian industrial county China is very good if you hold them to your specs and make it more painful for them to cheat than to simple produce the quality contracted for.?

Keep us posted on your new mount and your progress. Welcome to the Losmandy community!

Hi Warren,

I forgot to ask if you have discovered BYEOS yet? I don't have an M50 but the latest release now supports most of the better Canon MLIC bodies including the M50. Check it out: BYEOS?

Been a tad busy . . . . ordering that new GM811GHD from Tanya!? Should ship in a couple of weeks.? Oh man, like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Shout out to:
Brian for answering all of my pesky questions.? I suggested to Tanya that she let Scott know that you deserve a big raise.? 8- )
Chip and Sonny for their helpful comments.? Nice to have 'mandy buddies as a newbie owner.

P.S.? Chip, yes, I recently downloaded BYEOS PE and suffered through Guylain's interminable (but helpful) YouTube video.
