Orchid
4
Merry Christmas to everyone and best wishes for the coming year. I wanted to share the pictures of this Orchid that bloomed for the first time this year. Those of you from Hilltop know Terry Rehen, he gave this to me a number of years ago with the advice that I might never see it bloom. It is a Cymbidium Orchid It just decided to bloom this year, just in time for Christmas and its really special. I'm also sending a sampling of some Camellias blooming in the garden right now by a separate email. Best Wishes and Merry Christmas to Everyone. Bob

Happiness
13
Hi hope everyone’s well. I’m still working part-time so I haven’t kept up much. I saw this on the CBS Saturday morning show and I searched for their web site. Sometimes you can get lucky and find these at Home Depot but I thought I’d share since winter is coming and we can’t do much gardening outside. https://peaceloveandhappiness.club/collections/small-plants?page=4 Take care, Pam

Delightful Visit & Swap
2
Suzanne, I really enjoyed getting together with you, Marilyn, Patrick & Julie, and Anita last Wednesday. The lunch was delicious and the your garden beautiful, if only it hadn’t been so hot outside. Patrick, thanks for the ferns and the Louisiana Iris. Let’s do it again this fall! Maradee

Swap
4
Just a reminder that next Wednesday, July 3, will be the LAGS swap/Royal Appearance of Queen Anita at my house. Festivities will begin at 10:00 AM to allow garden viewing before the temperature reaches crematory level. Lunch will be served with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Please let me know if you'll be attending so I know how much to prepare. My address is 815 East Main, New Iberia LA 70560, and my phone number is (985) 869-0671. My house is on the corner of Main and Phillip Streets. It is easier to get in and out of your car if you park in the driveway behind the house on Phillip Street. You need not bring plants to swap in order to attend., but we are a greedy bunch always on the lookout for something new. My garden is now four years old, so if you see something you like, ask me. If I have sufficient, I'd love to share it with you. Suzanne

Swap Offerings
3
All, Anyone coming to the Swap at Suzanne’s next week? Below are my offerings. Let me know if you want anything offered as I’m not digging them until they are asked for. I’ve aggravated my left ankle and knee and using a shovel is quite painful for me. ( As is squatting and bending from old age). 1. Hemigraphis— a nice little ground cover for shade. 2. Calathea louisae—winter hardy large ground cover that grows in shade or some sun. Dies back in winter but returns. Gets to about 2 feet tall . 3. Graphtopedlum or Ghost Plant— Hardy most Winters if given a minimum amount of protection. Drop a leaf on the ground and it roots. Grows best in pots with good drainage. 4. Setaria palmifolia Or Pleated Palm Grass— large ground cover for shade or some sun. Can be killed back in winter but always has returned in the Spring for me. Can get up to 3 feet in height. Let me know by Saturday if you want any of these. Their numbers are limited. Anita, the Swap Queen, has left her castle in Kentucky and is slow moving south— stopping to greet other subjects along the way. Maradee

A Royal Visit
6
Her Highness Queen Anita Stamper will be visiting her subjects, aka The Lags. On July 3, 2024 I’ll host an informal Swao and Lunch at my house in New Iberia. Starting time will be 10:00 AM so that strolling can be done before it gets too hot. As is regal protocol, attendees are asked to bring side dishes, appetizers, or desserts and beforehand to offer plants they are willing to share. As hostess, y'all are welcome to plants you like here that are large enough to share. Suzanne

Jefferson Island Flowers
2
New Iberia is surrounded by 5 salt domes which were thought to be islands by the indigenous Attakapas tribe and early European settlers. Avery Island and Jefferson Island have beautiful gardens that are open to the public. I took these pictures Tuesday on Jefferson Island when I visited with a new beau. The first is Nelumbo lutea is a native water lily that was a food source for the native Americans of the Attakapas tribe. the second is Magnolis grandiflora, and the third Clerodendrum speciosissimum Suzanne

As I was leaving for the grocery store I saw this splash of color at the front of my house. My walking Iris are in bloom…without most of their foliage which hasn’t come back from the winter freeze. Such a beautiful surprise. Maradee

Pink Macrantha Azalea
5
This group of Azaleas is at the end of my house. I planted these many years ago when we first moved in to provide some screening outside the main bedroom. This is an interesting Azalea, It blooms well after all of the other Azaleas and continues to bloom well into June. It will also rebloom to some degree in the Fall. I first saw this blooming out of season at someone's house and was able to find it at the Original Cleggs nursery many years ago. Now as far as i can tell it is no longer available at the local nurseries. At one point I think it was considered a separate species but is not lumped into the Indica's . The other photo is a statue I bought for Paula many years ago at a shop in St. Francisvile. I always intended to make some kind of fountain out of it but never did. It sits outside the bedroom window across from the Azalea. This area tends to get somewhat neglected and stays kind of wild. This is the view outside the bedroom window.

Anyone know what Cherry this is?
7
I got this shrub from Hilltop Arboretum around 4 years ago. A group of these had been donated by some one ( a landscaper? Or maybe the Master Gardeners after their sale?). It was labeled Ornamental Cherry and has always bloomed beautifully every spring. This year it fruited. Do you all think it’s a Nanking Cherry? That’s what I came up with when I googled it. Maradee

Pigs Flew (or PF)
11
I'm not sure how or when I got this Iris, but it bloomed in my garden for the first time season, and in a shady area. PF is a beautiful pink Iris just a day past its prime and beginning to cave in. Do miracles like that actually happen? I saw it the day, or two, before while picking up empty pots, then was interrupted and forgot to take a picture. Then I thought I had dreamed PF but wasn't sure. I had to search a while before I could find it. I'm glad l was not dreaming. Next year PF will have a position of adequate sunlight and maybe even some food! I will also get a better picture! Anita Stamper -- Anita Stamper
