BP-500 battery notes
Hi, My BP-500 arrived yesterday. I had pre-ordered it back in March from HRO, and it was one of many which were held up in customs. Like some others, mine arrived missing the 18650 cells. HRO sent me an e-mail even before I called them. I selected the option for HRO to send me the batteries separately, which they shipped immediately. There were other options, including for me to send it in, if I wanted HRO to install the cells. I was concerned about the issue raised here by some about uneven charging. Below is what I did to test things out. I am concerned some might reach the wrong conclusions if for example their cells didn't start out close to the same charge state. First, I Installed 6 genuine Panasonic "flat-top" NCR18650B batteries I had on hand. These were close to fully charged, and I confirmed all were close to the same terminal voltage to start. See measurements below. Next, I ran radio the radio in receive mode the rest of the day and some this morning, maybe down to 11.2V, enough so it would know to charge the batteries. Finally, I let charge until the radio indicated charging was complete, then measured voltages again. battery layout, view from rear: + #1 - + #4 - + #2 - + #5 - + #3 - + #6 - cell voltages: Cell#, Initial voltage, after mild discharge voltage, after BP-500 native re-charge completion voltage. #1, 4.149, 3.907, 4.148 #2, 4.149, 3.907, 4.148 #3, 4.141, 3.906, 4.141 #4, 4.132, 3.900, 4.140 #5, 4.147, 3.908, 4.155 #6, 4.143, 3.908, 4.151 My cells were not all exactly the same starting voltage, but I picked ones out of my bin that were as close to each other as I could find. A better test would be to let them run down to more like 3V, but I was impatient. Measurements were with a calibrated Fluke 8845A DMM. I hope this is helpful to others who may have concerns, or wish to compare. I am satisfied with charge completion being reached when all sells are about 4.15V. Software upgrade with battery pack installed.
4
I have just installed the battery pack and went to do a software update. I would like detailed instructions as to how to update. Questions.... Do I have to dismount the battery pack? do I plug in 12v to the radio as previous instructions indicated with the battery pack mounted or off the radio? Need instructions for/from Lab599.... don't want to let the magic smoke out of the radio. Thanks... Steve

Headset wiring
3
I was trying to wire my mono headset to work with tx500. According to the sources I found on Internet that proper way of wiring mono speaker to TRS connector is to do it as follow: S <-> Speaker - RT <-> Speaker + Such configuration works with PC plug and the speaker mike connector from my tx500, although it fails when using the provided headset adapter. Wiring manual expects following wiring: S <-> NC R <-> Speaker + T <-> Speaker - This works with adapter, but not with the PC or speakermike. Is it so, the adapter wiring is borked by design, or I'm doing something somewhere wrong?

Strange crackling noise?
7
Hi folks I have just received a replacement tx-500 for one that went faulty but I have notice a strange cracking noise when the radio is turned on. It goes once the radio has booted up. However I just thought I¡¯d update the software and the crackling noise is there all the time when the update screen is on. I have compared this with my old one that just has a screen fault and no crackling noises at all. Problem is I don¡¯t know what is ¡®normal¡¯ so can anybody tell me if they have a crackling noise when in the update screen as this is the most obvious manifestation of the issue. https://share.icloud.com/photos/0fe2QGAJ_qnNyP7yitove_6Yg thanks ian

Pan-adapter 50Mhz
8
Good evening folks, I've recently built myself a 6m dipole and tried it out on the TX-500 in the 50Mhz - 52Mhz region. The first thing I noticed when tuning over this band as opposed to the 20m band (say) was the odd behaviour of the pan-adapter. The only way to describe it was that signals would appear to enter the pan-adapter on both sides of the screen and they would then converge on the center as you continued to tune. Apart from these signals appearing as "mirroring pairs", as multiple signals - say 3 signal spikes on the left and 3 on the right - converge on the middle of the screen they also appear to cluster together more tightly. It's like the rate these signals converge on the center is not linear and you end up with these signal spikes clustering in the shaded area of the pan-adapter reminiscent of say a digital signal like PSK or FT8. As I was one firmware version behind (v1.18.08) I decided to upgrade to v1.19.01 . It did not change the behaviour described. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Many thanks, Steve

18650 batteries for BAT 599
Hi gang, it appears that 18650 cells come in two different "flavors". Those being flat top and button top. The button top allows the + contact of the device to be slightly recessed, thus preventing reverse polarity. I am unable to discern from the literature which one the BAT 599 requires. Any help from someone who already has the battery case already would be greatly appreciated. thanks and 73, Ron/ KC8SFQ

Optimal Radio settings for 20m
10
Looking for some optimal radio settings to use when I¡¯m on 20 meters. I appear to be constantly ¡°in the noise¡± and I am not sure if it¡¯s the radio (10w) or my settings. I am using a Spiderbeam with SWR 1:05 so height isn¡¯t the issue I believe. So if anyone has some radio settings that seem to work well for them, please share. ¡¯73

New Firmware available: v1.19.01 (2023.10.03)
6
Changelog from the firmware download page ( https://lab599.com/downloads ) : * Added CAT protocol Lab599 with support for the DIG mode switching command (MD6). * Added the ability to select the CAT protocol Lab599 or TS-2000 * Adjusted transceiver power management at critically low supply voltage. I just updated to the new firmware, but since I don't use CAT, I can't comment on the relevant changes. Further, I never had a critically low supply voltage with my LiFePO4 (4S, 2Ah/24Wh or 4Ah/50Wh), therefore I neither can't comment on this change. 73 Stephan

Non-functioning TX-500
3
My TX-500 audio conked while on a SOTA activation in July. I wrote to the US service office and they suggested its the TDA7056AT chip. HOwever, they don't have any in stock and I've been waiting since then. Has anybody experienced a similar issue? Any thoughts/alternative solutions? Thank you! Facundo

Remote tuner
9
I am installing a 8m tall vertical antenna at a distance of 30 metres from the shack. My perfectly good Icom AH-2 needs 10W to tune, which makes my TX-500 shut down because it doesn't like the high initial SWR. So I will have to sell the tuner and get something that needs less initial power. The feeder will have to be an RG-213 on the ground to avoid a clash with my XYL. A trawl though the internet does not disclose many tuners apart from the MFJ 926B, that require such a small tune-up power. Has anybody had experience of using a MFJ 926B together with a TX-500?

Losing DIG mode on band change
17
Hey guys, I was trying to contact Lab599 directly but I can only find the support email that did not seem to work the last time. Since this is a developer¡¯s matter there¡¯s little point contacting the US service center either. So I hope someone at Lab599 is monitoring this forum. For the love of God Lab599, please, please fix this bug. It severely limits one of my intended purposes for this rig. Problem: My radio app automatically cycles through various bands to scan for connection requests. It CAT¡®s nicely and even PTT¡®s just fine. Major issue: Every time it changes bands it switches from DIG to USB. In theory this wouldn¡¯t be a problem but unfortunately USB instructs the radio to pipe its input through the MIC, not the DATA input. So it PTT¡¯s alright but obviously there¡¯s no power output rendering the entire auto band scanning process useless. I can only see two possible solutions for that: * Fix firmware so it stays in DIG mode after /freq/band changes * Add a DATA input option in USB. This is probably pointless since it would neglect the entire point of having a separate DIG mode since the input seems to be the only difference between USB and DIG. I really love this rig but this problem is a huge spoiler for me. Can we expect a firmware update soon that addresses this issue? Maybe you can even add a manual passband filter settings in DIG? Tbh, I feel digital operation has been neglected a little bit in this rig but it¡¯s a SDR so I have high hopes this is going to change with future firmware updates

Wiring for classic COM port and
2
Hi, I was considering acquiring GPD Micro PC for portable use with TX500. I wonder if it will be possible to make proper wiring between the transceiver andRS232 and TRRS ports. The Headset TRRS connector is described in the wiring diagrams, but pure RS232 is not. There is not +3,3 output on the connector pin out, additionally I'm not sure how happy transceiver will be with levels provided by notebook. Did any of you managed to arrange similar setup, or knows if it sill be possible?

MARS mod on TX500
30
Hi everyone, Has anyone done the MARS mod on the TX500 radio? I heard that Lab599 has a US-based service center that will do it, BUT despite repeated calls over a few months, no one ever answers or responds to voicemails. Frankly, I am a bit skeptical of sending my radio to this place. Has someone had better luck?
