Data Thermals Comparison

How does the TX-500 compare in the area of thermal performance compared to a KX2? (Or other rig you may have experience with)
I had a KX2 at one time but I didn¡¯t do any data modes with it.
My FT-817 requires additional cooling to run more than 1 watt.
Any experience to share?
Im considering a TX-500 or KX2 purchase with a focus toward digi this time.

I can't compare the two rigs because I don't have a KX2 (I want one though) but I've run plenty of data modes at the full 10 watts, as well as a pile at 5w. Never had an issue. The radio will get warm, but it's essentially a solid chunk of aluminum, so it does a great job of dissipating heat.?

I've also run FT8 on the TX-500 for hours, outdoors in a warm climate. Never had a noticible heat issue

That¡¯s great to hear guys. I¡¯m thinking of a field day, solar powered, data modes, QRP station.
I¡¯m also fortunate to live near a beach and I thought the TX-500 would be good for that type of use, with all its protection.
The built-in tuner of the KX2 is the only thing really swaying me towards it.

thanks for the comments?

I am doing almost exactly the scenario you described with the TX 500. Except the beach part. Works very well. I've done FT8 in particular but other digital modes as well for hours, and as another poster indicated, sometimes the radio gets a little warm. That's about the extent of it.

I've also found in that mode, that I use a little external speaker, that someone else in this group put me on to. The microphone is just clutter if you're doing digital modes. Arguably, you don't need a speaker at all I guess. I however really like to listen to what's going on even if it's digital.

Best of luck, Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Its good to I can go with the TX-500 and not worry about heat too much.?

I have a Digirig interface. I would just need to jumper it for the 3v3 and get or make some cables.
A speaker would be nice as I¡¯m interested in CW too.

Add me to the list of those who have run FT8 on a TX-500 for hours without a problem. (By the way, I¡¯ve tried that with a Xiegu X6100 without success ¡ª despite its other positive aspects, that radio just doesn¡¯t dissipate heat nearly as well.)

P.S. To Jim¡ I¡¯m wondering what kind of external speakers you recommend.
