Glare from display
David W3GZS
Thomas Witherspoon, K4SWL, shows in this video????that glare/reflections from the TX-500? display can be a problem with display readability. I notice that my IC-7300 has more of a matte finish which lessens this problem.? Anyone have thoughts/suggestions on some type of screen protector with a non-glare finish or polarization that might improve display visibility. Added benefit: Protect the display from scratches.

I left factory film on my radio. I snipped the blue tab off carefully and dont plan to remove. Glad I do that out of habit lol.?
Ive modded plenty of Game Boys back in the late 90s and early 2000s and there's a mod called "biversion" that flips the polarization of the screen to enhance the view. Makes things darker but requires moving and adding components as well as rotation the polarization film in the screen. Theres's even a trick to reduce "water rings" by dusting a membrane layer with diatomaceous earth too. Ive done some kits that used LOCA (liquid optically clear adhesive) to add an additional?membrane to LCDs of various reasons, mostly adding front light to screens that cant be backlit. But that's all old technology and irrelevant as LEDs have come a long way. That indiglo technology stuff.? There used to be a anti-glare?tape you could put over the rear view mirror and worked great on those old school displays.? I haven't seen it in a long time. Usually sold next to those extinct deer whistle gimmicks you stick to your bumper. Came I'm a roll kind of like window cling tint. It was rubbery like window cling and has to use sharp scissors to cut that semi-opaque scotch tape (the cheap stuff) has anti-glare properties too but might blur details too much.? There's also another stuff used in glasses lense. I think its a magnesium based compound they use to coat glasses. Sometimes when you have stretches in prescription glasses, its that coating. Ive been desperate enough to remove it on scratched glasses in the past.? Itd be a cool idea for Lab599 to visit that idea in the future.? I also wonder if voltage plays a role on the backlight screen brightness. There is an adjustment to brightness and contrast (Menu option 27 and 28)?on the radio but glare can only be avoided by either a visor or anti glare?system.? If anyone was to make a Lab599 screen protectors and anti-glare with of those decal cutting machines, they'd definitely sell. X? |

Hello OM's,
I tinkered with different films and tools. Finally I was successful. I am using an anti-glare film provided for tablet computers by a German company. With professional cutting tools I produced a small film for the display of the TX-500. Its not perfect like a laser cut but it is fitting very good in a reasonable quality. Have a look at the photos. These are the results of protective films without anti-glare and with anti-glare. The difference is quite impressive I suppose. There are several films left. Additionally, there are also some protective films available. If you are interested please let me know. Cheers, Stef DL5DG |
