Re: Any success with TX-500 firmware update from linux.

I think that it was an older version of Linux that didn't have some of the dependencies for that package.

Eventually I just used windows.

I do think it was 64 bit, a Toshiba portege that is running 16.04

Thanks for the info though.

Re: Digital Mode data cable

This $8 soundcard is the way to go if you're looking for easy....

Re: Digital Mode data cable

Additional question to the the wiring diagram:
Today the PCs/Laptops normally have an USB Port for sound; is there a possibility to change the wiring diagram in the way to use an USB Plug instead of the 2 3,5 mm jacks or is it easier to buy an adapter?

Thank you for answers.

Re: Digital Mode data cable

Use a fine tip iron and solder.? watch lots of you tube instructional videos on how to solder, plan on ruining a couple of cable ends.

Tin the terminal and wire ends.

You learn by doing!

Wish i could be more help!

Re: Digital Mode data cable

I soldered the grounds from the cables together first (before the ground lead) and then applied a bit of solder to the ground of the cable.? Then I rested the ground on the lead, then applied the iron to the lead to finish the connection.? It's a bear, but it's doable.

Re: Digital Mode data cable

Any advice for soldering the audio data cable.? I do not have much experience with soldering trying to figure out a way to get at that center pin for the ground.? I have a Hakko iron with some smaller tips.

Thanks
Chris

Re: Any success with TX-500 firmware update from linux.

Yes I was able to update using linux.? I downloaded changed it to executable and just ran it from a terminal window.? A window popped up and I ran the update.? You have a 64bit processor?? I think it will only work with a 64bit proc that is intel/amd based (not arm based).

Re: TX-500 and MARS Utilizaation

Thanks John,
Thanks for the phone call regarding this.
This radio offers so much more in terms of ruggedness that it is ideal for what it is designed for -field use. I have been through several 817¡¯s and wouldn¡¯t consider a K2 or K3 because they are too fragile for a rough and tumble environment.
This radio is just ideal.
I am going to order one today knowing that the capability to operate outside of the amateur bands will be forthcoming.
This radio, I believe, will definitely have a following that will grow substantially. The amount of external interest in it in terms of peripheral support ie amplifiers, tuners, etc. is nice to see too.

All in all, a very nice and well thought out device.

Thanks again John for the support.

Re: TX-500 and MARS Utilizaation

They can do the modification. They are working out a procedure so I can perform it here. They said they would let me know once they had it ready.

TX-500 and MARS Utilizaation

I am seriously considering one of these machines. ?My big concern is the ability to operate outside of the amateur bands, specifically MARS and SHARES frequencies, as that is my primary usage.
I have spoken to John in Nevada and he is trying to come up with a way to do so. ?At this point it appears that the device will have to be sent to Russia to perform the modification. ?It isn't definite that they can/will do this. ?It is unfortunate if this capability is not provided as this would make a great field MARS transceiver. ?John is going to let me know what he finds out from the factory. ?

Re: Found a nice pouch for the TX-500

Search Amazon for:

GRIFITI Chiton Slim 10 5 x 10 inch Keyboard Sleeve .

This pouch fits the rig like a glove as if it was designed for it.?

this is a 1uF cap - is this correct ?

Re: Digital Mode data cable

i don't suppose there is a cheaper way to get 1 capacitor ? seems silly to buy 1 and pay $1 for the cap and $8 shipping...

Re: Found a nice pouch for the TX-500

Marc,

Nice case, good fit.? I am using a Skynew Powerbank Hard Travel Case that another TX500 user found on Amazon, .
It is a perfect fit and has room for a few accessories in the lid.? There is a protective elastic strap that will keep the TX500 from falling out as you open the case.? Then that case is stored in my grab'n'go box, a Pelican 1170, along with the mic/speaker, dipole antenna, external speaker and some extra connectors.? The only thing left to grab is the battery and coax.

I look forward to hearing of other's TX500 methods of packaging and storage.

Hey all,

I'm a bit of a keyboard nerd and it just occurred to me that the pouch I have for my planck keyboard is just about the perfect size for the TX-500. Those pouches are sturdy, they have a healthy amount of padding and a soft interior. I think I got mine when I got the keyboard on but it looks like they are now selling the pouches individually: (not an affiliate link).

Re: Building a Digital Mode Data Interface Cable

Hi Bob,

RE external amplifier control, page 29 of the manual says: You must connect pin 2, (PTT OUT), open collector of the REM/DATA connector? to the PTT control relay of the external power amplifier. Also pin 7 must be connected to the ground of the PA.

Also the following note: ATTENTION! The? maximum switching voltage must not exceed 25V and the maximum switched current must not exceed 0.5 A
